LEARFIELD has completed a $1.1B recapitalization that SBJ’s Michael Smith and Bret McCormick report will “greatly reduce the company’s debt while also infusing $150M in new equity investment” into the company. Specifically, the restructuring will reduce LEARFIELD’s debt from $1.1B to $500M after an 11-month debt-restructuring process. The new arrangement comes with a new set of majority stakeholders in Clearlake Capital Group, Charlesbank Capital Partners and funds managed by Fortress Investment Group, and the company’s new board of directors will be assigned so that each firm will have representation. Other directors from outside of the majority owners could be on the board as well, per Smith and McCormick, who also note that LEARFIELD “didn't share the company’s new debt ratio, but a source indicated it was closer to 5x, down from the 30x it hovered near in mid-2022, according to Moody’s.” (link)

Wofford AD Richard Johnson announces his retirement after 40 years with the school, including the last 23 as AD. Johnson, who had planned to retire at the end of the 2022-23 academic year, but opted to stay in light of several head coaching transitions, says he feels the time is right. “I am confident that our coaches, student-athletes and programs are poised for continued success, and with a new capital campaign in the planning phase, I believe it is best for new athletics leadership to be part of that process.” (link)

Michigan State trustee Dianne Byrum has called for an investigation into the alleged leak of Brenda Tracy’s name to the press following her accusations against Spartans Football HC Mel Tucker. Byrum says she is “disturbed and outraged” that Tracy’s name leaked and adds: “In the past, MSU has not been as transparent as it should’ve been during times of crisis, and we need to learn from these painful experiences and improve if we are going to regain the trust of our Spartan Community and move forward.” (link)

+ Pac-12 presidents and chancellors approved an employee retention-and-severance plan meant to “ensure the league remains staffed to the level necessary to produce roughly 1,000 live events and meet contractual obligations to its media partners,” The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner writes. Wilner also reports the severance plan applies to all 192 full-time employees and includes both COBRA and outplacement support. Commissioner George Kliavkoff is not included in the retention-and-severance plan, and Wilner notes a separate scope-of-services plan to determine which Pac-12 services should be continued as normal has yet to be approved by the schools. It will require a formal board vote once the restraining order is lifted. (link)

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) tells On3’s Pete Nakos that when it comes to college football, “I don’t know whether you pull out of the NCAA. I know they really don’t want to handle football because it’s totally different than everything else. They don’t make any money off of it. But there’s got to be some kind of regulatory group that controls football and gets back to some sense of reality in the future.” Tuberville is also optimistic about bipartisan support for the bill he co-drafted with Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) as it is considered by the Senate Commerce Committee. “I put in the health provision because it was big for me, but it was also big for the Democrats to be able to take care of health care after competition. I think that’s really helped now.” Tuberville goes on to tell Nakos: “Another problem that we’re going to have at the end of the day is the Democrats want to unionize. A lot of the Democrats do. They want revenue sharing and individual contractors. I’m fine with some of that, but I’m not for unionizing whatsoever. … I would love to get to a point where everybody could make a little bit of the revenue, and do some revenue sharing. But this is giving the control back to the universities and the coaching staff. Right now, the players are running everything with this transfer portal the way it is.” More. (link)

The FBS Oversight Committee expressed interest for a transfer model that “establishes a uniform start date for the written notification of transfer process to begin the Monday following the second Saturday in December,” considers the impact of the NLI signing period, and includes three windows (December, January and April). The committee agreed to solicit feedback from constituents ahead of next month’s meeting. (link)

The Athletic’s Sam Khan chronicles the evolution of the Director of Player Personnel/GM role in college football as programs continue to place more emphasis on the transfer portal. Tulane DPP Wes Fritz points out that even with high school recruiting, removing some of the burden from a position coach traditionally pegged as the Recruiting Coordinator is more efficient. “There’s not enough hours in the day for our coaches to gameplan against Ole Miss and then watch 100 snaps of 10 different recruits at their position every week.” SMU HC Rhett Lashlee adds: “Some things happen fast in real time. There’s no way you can micromanage everything if you want to be good.” At Texas Tech, HC Joey McGuire’s first hire was GM James Blanchard, who has the autonomy to offer recruits even without McGuire’s immediate go-ahead. Blanchard still informs McGuire ahead of time, but if the coach is indisposed, Blanchard can extend an offer because McGuire values being the first program to offer a recruit when possible. Blanchard tells Khan that when McGuire hired him he said: “If you come to Texas Tech, the only person who can tell you ‘no’ is me.” More from Khan. (link)

Coaches Corner…
+ North Carolina Central parts ways with Women’s Basketball HC Trisha Stafford-Odom. (link)
+ A former UMass Lowell men's soccer head coach violated ethical conduct rules when he directed a student-athlete to pay him $10K from that student-athlete's $20K in scholarship funds, according to an agreement released by the DI Committee on Infractions, which also finds the coach provided impermissible benefits to three student-athletes, directed student-athletes to exceed countable athletically related activities during the pandemic, and tampered with a prospective transfer who later enrolled at and competed for UMass Lowell. Per the NCAA, the coach planned to reallocate the funds to other players. The school and enforcement staff also agreed that over the course of four academic years, the former HC violated ethical conduct rules by providing impermissible benefits in the form of cash loans to two student-athletes and provided the use of a car to a third. The program has been placed on two years of probation, will vacate all records from competition in which ineligible student-athletes competed and incur multiple reductions in recruitment opportunities, among other penalties. The coach was given a five-year show-cause. (link)

The sound system at Oregon State’s Reser Stadium appears to have outlived its usefulness, but it may be late this season or after before it can be replaced, according to Beavers Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations Sara Elcano, who says: “You can sit there and continue to tweak and modify a system, but there becomes a point where you can’t get replacement parts,” Elcano said. “We knew the end was coming. It happened a bit more abrupt than we thought.” The new system is expected to cost around $2M. (link)

+ ProhiBet, which was developed by U.S. Integrity and Odds On Compliance, has become so popular among professional teams and college athletic departments that developers say they’re backed up just a week after launch. Already, ProhiBet has deals in place with the SEC, Big 12, AAC, Conference USA, Mountain West and Patriot League, along with several schools from the Big Ten, which did not sign on as a conference, per SBJ’s Bill King, who adds: “If a player, coach or employee listed by a ProhiBet client attempts a bet that they’re prohibited from making – like a college player placing any sports bet, or a pro player betting on his own sport – the software blocks the bet and notifies the league or school. … Schools can default to an all-encompassing block, in line with NCAA rules.” U.S. Integrity CEO Matt Holt: “In theory, this would have caught 80% of the people at Iowa and Iowa State – and done it before they could place a bet.” (link)
+ Shaw Sports Turf is now the official synthetic turf sponsor for the College Football Playoff, the CFP’s first such sponsor in that category. Shaw plans to activate in the Playoff Fan Central fan fest at this year’s title game in Houston. The deal was facilitated by Fishbait Solutions, which last month sold a CFP deal to Avocados from Mexico, per SBJ’s Michael Smith. (link)
+ Arkansas State has scheduled road football matchups against TCU in 2026 and Georgia Tech in 2027. (link)
