UCLA AD Martin Jarmond shares his thoughts about the football program’s momentum, Bruins Men’s Basketball HC Mick Cronin’s readiness for the Big Ten and other topics on The Jim Rome Show Podcast, as well as what advice he gives players for dealing with social media. “You have to approach it as a tool, and that's what I try to share with our young people is you use social media, don't let social media use you.” Jarmond also tells Rome that “part of the reason we're going to Big Ten is to have better game times because on the West Coast, as you know living in LA, if you're on the East Coast, you don't always watch us. You don't always watch that 7:30 p.m. kick that's 10:30 on the East Coast. You're asleep in the first quarter. That’s real. And so you’ve got to be in a conference, you’ve got to provide those opportunities for your student-athletes to have more exposure. Especially in an NIL world now. … What do you need to help your NIL deals besides education? You need exposure.” Full interview. (link)

Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel wants to know whether “next year is the year that fans tune out college football because of the ‘disaster’ that is NIL, or the ‘wild, wild west’ of the transfer portal. … Asking for a friend…or at least the whiny coaches, fear-mongering conference commissioners, absurd NCAA attorneys and lockstep establishment media personalities who told us, repeatedly, that by now everything would be ruined forever.” Wetzel points out that not only have none of those doomsday prognostications manifested, the sport appears to be even more popular. “Stadiums are packed. Television ratings are up – despite ESPN missing 15M homes due to a contract battle with Charter. The buzz around the sport is incredible, and not merely because of Deion Sanders, although Coach Prime sure doesn’t hurt.” Meanwhile, Wetzel argues the real existential threat is conference realignment, and “athletic directors and commissioners – who secretly tamper with and then transfer entire athletic departments in pursuit of more money – can’t blame that on the players. It’s all an attempt to scare the public so that Congress can somehow ‘save’ an industry that, in reality, is enjoying increased revenue, increased broadcasting deals, increased interest, increased employment and increased salaries.” (link)

North Carolina Football HC Mack Brown responds to the NCAA’s statement criticizing UNC’s leadership earlier this week. “I totally respect the chairman of the Division I committee standing up for the volunteers and his staff. And that’s what we all do. And if somebody is harassing the staff, threatening the staff, or has wronged the staff – that’s wrong, and that should stop, and it should stop immediately. And you don’t want to create mental health problems for those families and the people that are involved because they’re trying to do their job. … And that’s exactly the same reason that the administration and I stood up for Tez Walker, because we thought he was wronged. And we felt like he was treated poorly. … But there is a difference in my life and some of the other people’s lives that judge because I have to live with the mental health of these kids every day. I have to tell Tez Walker that he can’t play. I have to try to figure out what to do with him, because so much of his identity is football, between now and the end of the semester, and then try to help him with options moving forward. So I totally understand the comments, totally understand the concerns on the chairman’s part, but we have the same concerns here and feel like it’s fair for us to express it.” (link)

NCAA Assoc. Director of Communications Meghan Durham Wright confirms to Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde that “there have been threats against committee members and their families” and “threats to show up at their places of work” following the decision to reject North Carolina WR Tez Walker’s eligibility waiver. Forde notes an Asst. AD at James Madison even had to have his contact info deleted from the JMU website and two other administrators at different schools locked their X (formerly Twitter) accounts. Forde goes on to argue that UNC “bears some responsibility in ginning up a mob mentality in a segment of its fan base” and writes: “North Carolina complaining about the NCAA being unfairly harsh is rich, given the fact that the basketball program famously got away unpunished with decades of academic fraud because it out-lawyered the NCAA.” Also: “[Tar Heels Football HC Mack] Brown has been Captain Guardrails for years in college football, decrying the terrible state of the game from NIL to the transfer portal. He’s quite possibly been the loudest Cassandra in a profession full of them.” More from Forde. (link)

Michigan State will christen the ice surface at Munn Arena as Ron Mason Rink in honor of the Spartans’ late men’s hockey HC. Samford launches the Community, Health and wellness, Academics, Meaning, Professionalism and Success (CHAMPS) program, which aims to “invest in Samford's student-athletes through comprehensive development in all aspects including athletic and academic competitiveness, personal growth and wellness, career growth and professionalism, faith formation and community engagement.” GM of Ticket Sales and Operations David Moore: “Samford is being very intentional in its efforts to invest in our student-athletes, not just from an athletic standpoint, but as a total person. The sport they compete in is something they do, not their entire identity. The CHAMPS program addresses this as it is a comprehensive strategy for development in all aspects of the student-athlete's life." (link)

The AP’s Kristie Rieken explores the important role HBCU bands play at their schools and how they’ve become “part of a treasured hallmark of the Black community.” Texas Southern Marching Band Director Brian Simmons: “HBCU bands, it represents a lot of things. It’s competition. It’s discipline. It’s tradition. It’s all those things. Marching band for HBCUs, it’s almost a cornerstone.” Tennessee State Band Director Reginald McDonald says bands are often the “window to the school,” adding: “It basically puts a spotlight on each one of our programs and allows people to understand and know that in terms of music education at each one of these schools they’re very viable programs. And we do some unique things with very little funding often and we make magic, in a sense, happen.” Hampton alumnus Derek Webber, who created the National Battle of the Bands to increase exposure for HBCUs and their bands, puts it like this: “For an HBCU, the bands are part of the culture, they’re part of the lifestyle. And in some cases, they’re more important than the athletic team.” (link)

LEARFIELD has completed a $1.1B recapitalization that SBJ’s Michael Smith and Bret McCormick report will “greatly reduce the company’s debt while also infusing $150M in new equity investment” into the company. Specifically, the restructuring will reduce LEARFIELD’s debt from $1.1B to $500M after an 11-month debt-restructuring process. The new arrangement comes with a new set of majority stakeholders in Clearlake Capital Group, Charlesbank Capital Partners and funds managed by Fortress Investment Group, and the company’s new board of directors will be assigned so that each firm will have representation. Other directors from outside of the majority owners could be on the board as well, per Smith and McCormick, who also note that LEARFIELD “didn't share the company’s new debt ratio, but a source indicated it was closer to 5x, down from the 30x it hovered near in mid-2022, according to Moody’s.” (link)

Wofford AD Richard Johnson announces his retirement after 40 years with the school, including the last 23 as AD. Johnson, who had planned to retire at the end of the 2022-23 academic year, but opted to stay in light of several head coaching transitions, says he feels the time is right. “I am confident that our coaches, student-athletes and programs are poised for continued success, and with a new capital campaign in the planning phase, I believe it is best for new athletics leadership to be part of that process.” (link)

Michigan State trustee Dianne Byrum has called for an investigation into the alleged leak of Brenda Tracy’s name to the press following her accusations against Spartans Football HC Mel Tucker. Byrum says she is “disturbed and outraged” that Tracy’s name leaked and adds: “In the past, MSU has not been as transparent as it should’ve been during times of crisis, and we need to learn from these painful experiences and improve if we are going to regain the trust of our Spartan Community and move forward.” (link)

+ Pac-12 presidents and chancellors approved an employee retention-and-severance plan meant to “ensure the league remains staffed to the level necessary to produce roughly 1,000 live events and meet contractual obligations to its media partners,” The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner writes. Wilner also reports the severance plan applies to all 192 full-time employees and includes both COBRA and outplacement support. Commissioner George Kliavkoff is not included in the retention-and-severance plan, and Wilner notes a separate scope-of-services plan to determine which Pac-12 services should be continued as normal has yet to be approved by the schools. It will require a formal board vote once the restraining order is lifted. (link)

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) tells On3’s Pete Nakos that when it comes to college football, “I don’t know whether you pull out of the NCAA. I know they really don’t want to handle football because it’s totally different than everything else. They don’t make any money off of it. But there’s got to be some kind of regulatory group that controls football and gets back to some sense of reality in the future.” Tuberville is also optimistic about bipartisan support for the bill he co-drafted with Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) as it is considered by the Senate Commerce Committee. “I put in the health provision because it was big for me, but it was also big for the Democrats to be able to take care of health care after competition. I think that’s really helped now.” Tuberville goes on to tell Nakos: “Another problem that we’re going to have at the end of the day is the Democrats want to unionize. A lot of the Democrats do. They want revenue sharing and individual contractors. I’m fine with some of that, but I’m not for unionizing whatsoever. … I would love to get to a point where everybody could make a little bit of the revenue, and do some revenue sharing. But this is giving the control back to the universities and the coaching staff. Right now, the players are running everything with this transfer portal the way it is.” More. (link)

The FBS Oversight Committee expressed interest for a transfer model that “establishes a uniform start date for the written notification of transfer process to begin the Monday following the second Saturday in December,” considers the impact of the NLI signing period, and includes three windows (December, January and April). The Athletic’s Sam Khan chronicles the evolution of the Director of Player Personnel/GM role in college football as programs continue to place more emphasis on the transfer portal. Tulane DPP Wes Fritz points out that even with high school recruiting, removing some of the burden from a position coach traditionally pegged as the Recruiting Coordinator is more efficient. “There’s not enough hours in the day for our coaches to gameplan against Ole Miss and then watch 100 snaps of 10 different recruits at their position every week.” SMU HC Rhett Lashlee adds: “Some things happen fast in real time. There’s no way you can micromanage everything if you want to be good.” At Texas Tech, HC Joey McGuire’s first hire was GM James Blanchard, who has the autonomy to offer recruits even without McGuire’s immediate go-ahead. Blanchard still informs McGuire ahead of time, but if the coach is indisposed, Blanchard can extend an offer because McGuire values being the first program to offer a recruit when possible. Blanchard tells Khan that when McGuire hired him he said: “If you come to Texas Tech, the only person who can tell you ‘no’ is me.” More from Khan. (link)

Coaches Corner…

+ A former UMass Lowell men's soccer head coach violated ethical conduct rules when he directed a student-athlete to pay him $10K from that student-athlete's $20K in scholarship funds, according to an agreement released by the DI Committee on Infractions, which also finds the coach provided impermissible benefits to three student-athletes, directed student-athletes to exceed countable athletically related activities during the pandemic, and tampered with a prospective transfer who later enrolled at and competed for UMass Lowell. Per the NCAA, the coach planned to reallocate the funds to other players. The school and enforcement staff also agreed that over the course of four academic years, the former HC violated ethical conduct rules by providing impermissible benefits in the form of cash loans to two student-athletes and provided the use of a car to a third. The program has been placed on two years of probation, will vacate all records from competition in which ineligible student-athletes competed and incur multiple reductions in recruitment opportunities, among other penalties. The coach was given a five-year show-cause. (link)

The sound system at Oregon State’s Reser Stadium appears to have outlived its usefulness, but it may be late this season or after before it can be replaced, according to Beavers Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations Sara Elcano, who says: “You can sit there and continue to tweak and modify a system, but there becomes a point where you can’t get replacement parts,” Elcano said. “We knew the end was coming. It happened a bit more abrupt than we thought.” The new system is expected to cost around $2M. (link)

+ ProhiBet, which was developed by U.S. Integrity and Odds On Compliance, has become so popular among professional teams and college athletic departments that developers say they’re backed up just a week after launch. Already, ProhiBet has deals in place with the SEC, Big 12, AAC, Conference USA, Mountain West and Patriot League, along with several schools from the Big Ten, which did not sign on as a conference, per SBJ’s Bill King, who adds: “If a player, coach or employee listed by a ProhiBet client attempts a bet that they’re prohibited from making – like a college player placing any sports bet, or a pro player betting on his own sport – the software blocks the bet and notifies the league or school. … Schools can default to an all-encompassing block, in line with NCAA rules.” U.S. Integrity CEO Matt Holt: “In theory, this would have caught 80% of the people at Iowa and Iowa State – and done it before they could place a bet.” (link)
+ Shaw Sports Turf is now the official synthetic turf sponsor for the College Football Playoff, the CFP’s first such sponsor in that category. Shaw plans to activate in the Playoff Fan Central fan fest at this year’s title game in Houston. The deal was facilitated by Fishbait Solutions, which last month sold a CFP deal to Avocados from Mexico, per SBJ’s Michael Smith. (link)
