Toledo AD Bryan Blair and Executive Assoc. AD/COO/SWA Nicole Alderson join Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker to discuss the Rise Together strategic plan, what national success looks like for the Rockets, the department’s efforts to develop and retain talent, the stability of the MAC during a time of realignment and more. Blair talks about the process of getting buy-in from stakeholders throughout the department: “I think in a lot of ways for us here Toledo it was kind of a blank slate. I don't think they had done a plan in a long time, or maybe even in forever. So, there was some level of excitement – probably surprisingly, to me – on the process of going through and defining the strategic plan in a really comprehensive way. Nicole and I talked, we sent a survey out to our fans and we kind of expected a low hit rate – okay, who's going to get excited about a strategic planning survey? We were blown away by the number of responses we got from all facets of the community and campus to say, ‘Hey, here's things that you do really well, here's some things we wish you work on,’ and I'd say the vast majority was really constructive criticism on ways we can intentionally get better. I think when people get a chance to feel like they're part of something larger than themselves and their individual roles, to me that's when something special can happen.” Lots more in the full video on Connect. JohnCanzano.com’s namesake takes the Pac-12 leadership to task, stating the league’s leadership has come from the courts as there are key issues to be addressed for this year and beyond. The employee retention plan approved by all earlier this week includes “optionality for OSU and WSU to reconstitute the conference after July 1, 2024,” as he reports two schools signed the Apple media rights deal last month. Canzano writes: “The two that Kliavkoff should be providing concierge-level service to right now. But given how upset OSU and WSU were with the commissioner in the wake of that unforgettable Friday meltdown I wonder if he thinks their first order of business would be to terminate him. Both schools tell me Kliavkoff is not involved in their plans to move forward. I’m not a legal expert. But I’ve reached out to several in recent days. I can’t find anyone who has a solid notion that a court will come down against WSU and Oregon State on the matter of board composition. I also think there’s a reasonable expectation that the 10 departing members should be treated fairly by the Beavers and Cougars.” As for the next legal step, Canzano reports a preliminary hearing and discovery are on the docket, concluding: “Do the Pac-12 presidents and chancellors really want to reveal documents and their private correspondence? Do they want the term sheets involved with their new media-rights deals to go public? What else might get some sunshine? It’s why I smell a settlement coming. One that will draw some clear boundaries and let everyone get focused again. As one Pac-12 executive told me on Thursday: ‘I’ll bet the Big Ten, FOX and Big 12 all don’t want discovery either.’” (link)

Neither Michigan State Interim President Teresa Woodruff nor chair of the MSU Board of Trustees, Rema Vassar, will say whether they would support an investigation into who at the school may have played a role in leaking the identity of Brenda Tracy. Earlier this week, after Tracy said someone gave her name to the media, Trustee Dianne Byrum released a statement asking that the university “thoroughly investigate” the accusation. (link)

Bert Neff, the man at the center of investigations into suspicious bets on the LSU vs. Alabama baseball game this past spring, has been added to the Indiana Gaming Commission’s involuntary exclusion list, which permanently bars him from entering any casino or placing bets with a sportsbook in the state. According to ESPN’s Paula Lavigne and David Purdum, “Neff is a subject in ongoing investigations in Indiana as well as by the NCAA and gaming regulators in Ohio, according to multiple sources who have been briefed on the matter. The Indiana Gaming Commission has also been investigating additional bets on LSU in the game in question that were placed with the state's sportsbooks.” Lavigne and Purdum also report Neff had consistent communication with former Cincinnati Baseball HC Scott Googins, though Googins never responded to Neff’s texts about his gambling pursuits. Neff’s attorney says he does not believe the communications between the two played a role in Googins’ exit from the program. At one point Neff’s text to Googins included, “They shouldn't not be letting people bet on college sports [...] kids are betting them at a rate that's disturbing and it's going to come out soon how widespread it is.” More. Lots of eyeballs will be on sunglasses, hats & handshakes after the Colorado-Colorado State gridiron matchup today & Sports Illustrated’s Richard Johnson goes in on how Blenders eyewear is riding the Coach Prime wave. Blenders initially did a deal with Deion Sanders back in the spring & as luck would have it the company was already planning to put its Prime 21 line on public sale this Friday. Then Rams HC Jay Norvell fed the media machine this week with his comments about how he was brought up to take off his sunglasses & hat to shake hands after a game in an obvious snipe at Sanders. Blenders CEO Chase Fisher: “I’ve personally never received more calls, texts, emails or DMs in my entire 11 years [with Blenders] in one day than I have in the last, you know, 24 hours to two weeks. Honestly, I have people calling me from high school that I haven’t talked with in 15 years, they turn on the TV dealing with wearing Blenders like ‘What the hell? How does that happen?’ And so it’s been truly profound. I mean, it’s been earth shattering in terms of the amount of interest and curiosity and eyeballs and interest around the brand, which is just super exciting.” (link)

Troy continues to invest in Baseball as enhancements to Riddle-Pace Field are nearly complete. D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers shares pictures of the new entry plaza, plus new chairback seating. The upgrades also include new coaches offices, team meeting space, donor club & more. CollegeAD reports Trojans HC Skylar Meade has inked a new deal that makes him one of the four highest-paid HCs in the Sun Belt. Sounds like there’s also plans for further upgrades to the facility with a coming focus on student-athlete areas such as an expanded locker room, dedicated nutrition space, pro locker room, etc. (link, link)

The Patriot League recently held an orientation for the Diverse Talent Pathway Program, which seeks to identify and develop ethnic minority talent aspiring to become HCs, ADs and senior administrators. Through the program, members are matched with and mentored by HCs or senior administrators from different institutions. They also learn from institutional and league leaders during quarterly virtual check-ins. Commissioner Jennifer Heppel: "Since the founding of the Patriot League Anti-Racism Commission, an identified priority has been to provide development opportunities for our Black and Brown student-athletes, coaches and staff. We believe the formation of the Diverse Talent Pathway program is another small step toward our commitment to ensuring fairness, equitable opportunities, benefits and resources at our member institutions." Kansas men’s basketball student-athlete Arterio Morris has been suspended from the program. While the Jayhawks “have no further comment” beyond confirming the suspension, a second source confirmed to the Kansas City Star’s Shreyas Laddha that there is an allegation of rape against Morris that was reported to the KU police department in late August. Also from Laddha: “KU men’s basketball players Johnny Furphy and Elmarko Jackson are listed on the incident report as witnesses. KU basketball’s Nick Timberlake is also listed, under ‘other.’ … A source with knowledge of the situation said the men’s basketball players listed as witnesses or ‘other’ on the incident report were interviewed after the fact and ‘not involved in the incident at all. They are not under investigation or anything like that remotely.’” (link)

James Madison AD Jeff Bourne will retire this spring after a quarter-century leading the Dukes, per the Richmond Times-Dispatch's David Teel. On his tenure, Bourne tells Teel: “After a 25-year reign, it’s time to let somebody else take the helm. This has been a tremendous run for me, for my family. ... I want to spend a lot more time with (them) doing all those things that this professional lifestyle doesn’t allow you to do. ... The one thing for me that really stands out about JMU is our culture, and our culture is built on our relationships. ... That’s why I stayed here. Could have gone a lot of other places and chased money and done things of that nature. But for me it was about staying in an environment where you really enjoyed the people you worked with, you had great coaches and wonderful student-athletes, and we had the opportunity here to always continue to build and grow and get better.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown reports the “rapid deterioration of the Pac-12, along with the challenges in scheduling (particularly for Olympic sports), have led some campus-based leaders [in the West Coast Conference] to push for the league to be a bit more aggressive” with expansion.” Brown adds there has been mutual interest between the WCC and Grand Canyon but so far the Lopes don’t have the seven votes necessary to secure an invite. “For what it’s worth, virtually every single person I’ve talked to has identified [San Francisco] as the swing vote.” However, Brown believes it’s not a given that GCU would accept an invite because “there is a possibility that whatever configuration the Mountain West + Oregon State + [Washington State] takes…there’s a chance that league could also seek to add non-football members, such as Grand Canyon, Gonzaga, or other members of the WCC or WAC.” Brown also cites multiple administrators who believe Charleston will eventually join the Atlantic 10, but official word is unlikely to be forthcoming “because any school announcing a departure from the CAA is likely to be banned from participating in conference postseason events, like JMU was when they left for the Sun Belt.” More from Brown. Now that LEARFIELD has solved its debt issues, CEO Cole Gahagan has a chance to lead in a way he’s more comfortable with and tells Sportico’s Daniel Libit: “I wasn’t hired as a restructuring CEO, that’s not what’s in my DNA. … Now I get to do what I haven’t done for the last 12 months, which is turn my attention to how we continue to evolve this industry and grow it.” Gahagan also says bankruptcy was never in the works despite how it may have looked at various points over the past year. “We just weren’t going to let that happen, and that determination is probably one of the things this leadership team is most proud of.” On the restructuring itself, Gahagan says the private equity firms Clearlake Capital, Charlesbank Capital and Fortress Investment had been in the mix since last year. “No matter the circumstances, they have been collaborative, mission-oriented, to solve this in the right way. We didn’t just want to restructure the balance sheet to cut our debt in half, we want to make certain that we were putting into place a launch pad for this inflection point that would allow us, for the first time in a few years, to be much more deliberate and meaningful in our actions around innovation and growth.” Asked about how a potential football breakaway would impact the company, Gahagan remarks: “I have supreme confidence that given everything our company brings to table that our partnerships with whatever those entities become will be important.” (link)

An 18-person task force at Cal has recommended shifting the “athletics identity to Cal Berkeley in both name and logo” and developing a “visual identity that clearly communicates this shift.” The task force also, however, noted: “Following the approval of these recommendations, concerns were raised about George Berkeley’s legacy of white supremacy. The vice chancellor for equity and inclusion has been asked to help lead the university’s examination of these issues. These concerns are being considered as part of implementing these recommendations.” (link)

The timeline for Dartmouth Men’s Basketball unionization includes a response by the college by the 25th and a hearing with the NLRB regional director set for October 3, per Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. Tulane Sports Law Professor Gabe Feldman tells Dellenger: “If the NLRB determines Dartmouth basketball players are employees, then there is a very strong argument that all private school DI athletes are employees, including walk-ons. The question then would be, ‘Does the NLRB determine that all athletes, public schools as well, are employees?’” Feldman notes the lack of athletic scholarships in the Ivy League may help the effort. “They could claim, ‘We need to unionize to get better treatment in the form of athletic scholarships.’” The rise in union efforts is not foreign to the college, with the Student Workers Collective signing a new collective bargaining agreement in February. Feldman adds: “From the big picture, we are seeing the rise of unions across the country. We are seeing a rise of the workers. It’s a cliche, but a rising tide lifts all boats. There is momentum across the country. It becomes much easier to sell unionization to other groups of employees when you see this wave happening. […] Union success begets more unions which often begets more success. It’s a cycle.” (link)

The Messenger’s Seth Davis argues the NCAA should do away with transfer waivers overall and settle on one unambiguous policy. “In setting up this waiver process instead of simply passing a rule without exceptions, the NCAA has once again violated a cardinal rule of leadership: If you try to make everyone happy, you make no one happy.” Davis goes on to predict that controversies like the Tez Walker Case will only continue. “In the last few days, I have been contacted by numerous coaches and representatives from basketball programs asking if I would write about their players who have been denied waivers in hopes of drumming up support. The only way this lunacy ends is for the NCAA to do what it should have done in the first place, which is to make one blanket rule and apply it to everyone. We all know what happens to people who travel down the middle of the road. The only mystery is why the NCAA couldn’t see this collision coming.” (link)

The West Virginia Board of Governors today officially voted to eliminate 143 faculty positions and 28 academic programs. As reported previously, the controversial cuts include all foreign language degrees, which include bachelor’s degrees in French, Spanish, Chinese studies, German studies and Russian studies, along with master’s degrees in linguistics and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), among other programs. Some faculty members may lose their jobs as soon as May. (link)

Former Bucknell President Brian Mitchell in an op-ed for Forbes asserts that “American higher education faces an existential crisis. Boards, administrators and faculty must wake up to the new realities that they face. For trustees, it may be too late to use an incremental band-aid. If the wounds are too deep, boards have a fiduciary obligation to plot a new strategy in an era of rising deficits to modify what the college offers, locate new revenue, seek new partnerships and affiliations, and merge or close. The goal must not be to postpone planning until the institution’s value is reduced to a real estate sale.” Mitchell suggests several steps that governing boards and campus CEOs can take, including adopting an activist approach that is strategic rather than tactical; familiarizing themselves with potential threats; exploring partnerships; and thoughtfully navigating closures and mergers. “From my perspective, solutions that overwhelmingly rely on outdated funding mechanisms like tuition no longer work. Large endowments might allow some leadership to kick the can down the road, but there is an endpoint to this approach for all but a handful of the wealthiest places.” More from Mitchell. (link)
