Trevecca Nazarene will move from the G-MAC to the GSC starting July 1, 2024. TNU President Dan Boone: "Given Trevecca's footprint in the G-MAC, this was not an easy decision. We were a founding member and have enjoyed participation with our northern schools. However, the priority on the travel required of our athletes and the desire to compete with area schools made the decision to join the Gulf South Conference the best decision for Trevecca. We have been long term friends with many of the schools in the Gulf South and look forward to renewing old friendships and establishing new competitive friendships. The move also allows us to compete in the geography of our alumni and supporting churches.” (link)

A report from the Colorado Office of the State Auditor indicates the state’s eight DII schools had combined expenditures of $71M and self-supporting revenue of $17M. Colorado School of Mines AD David Hansburg: “There are many Division I [schools] that have skewed the viewpoint of the public. But for most of us operating in DII and DIII, it's still for the overall betterment of the community, the institution, all students, and obviously student athletes.” Hansburg also sounds the alarm on the potential professionalization of student-athletes: “If all student-athletes are declared employees, because that's something that's out there right now, that would be a major threat to Division II [and] Division III, because there's no way we can afford to pay student athletes as employees.” (link)

There’s a new DII bowl game for 2023, the Florida Beach Bowl, which will feature two teams from the CIAA and SIAC that finish the season with at least six wins and are in good academic standing. The game will take place on December 13 at DRV PNK Stadium, home of Inter Miami, and be broadcast on HBCU+. CEO Victor Robenson: "Today's press conference isn't just about football; it's about opening doors for HBCUs. We're creating a platform for academic and athletic excellence to be showcased on a national stage. […] We want to shift the word exposure to be part of the monetization partnership, where brands can celebrate these kids, reward them for their commitment and get exposure to opportunities in these corporations.” (link, link)

Fifteen Dartmouth (DI) men’s basketball players have filed a petition with the NLRB to unionize and join SEIU Local 560. (link, link); Sportico’s Michael McCann and Daniel Libit point out that even if Dartmouth men’s hoops players are designated as employees, that doesn’t mean it can or will happen at other universities because the “NLRA does not govern the relationship between public universities and their workers; that is a question of state labor law and state labor boards, which vary widely across the 50 states, with some ‘labor friendly’ and others ‘management friendly.’” McCann himself notes that “this will take time to play out (years, given the role of courts). As is often true with law, change via law is slow and must go through extensive procedure. So be cautious with the inevitably exaggerated and probably inaccurate media headlines on this.” (link, link); The timeline for Dartmouth Men’s Basketball unionization includes a response by the college by the 25th and a hearing with the NLRB regional director set for October 3, per Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger. Tulane (DI) Sports Law Professor Gabe Feldman tells Dellenger: “If the NLRB determines Dartmouth basketball players are employees, then there is a very strong argument that all private school DI athletes are employees, including walk-ons. The question then would be, ‘Does the NLRB determine that all athletes, public schools as well, are employees?’” The rise in union efforts is not foreign to the college, with the Student Workers Collective signing a new collective bargaining agreement in February. Feldman adds: “From the big picture, we are seeing the rise of unions across the country. We are seeing a rise of the workers. It’s a cliche, but a rising tide lifts all boats. There is momentum across the country. It becomes much easier to sell unionization to other groups of employees when you see this wave happening. […] Union success begets more unions which often begets more success. It’s a cycle.” (link)
