All eyes were on the handshake following last night’s Colorado-Colorado State barnburner in Boulder. No fireworks from Buffs HC Deion Sanders or Rams boss Jay Norvell. CU prevailed in double overtime. (link)

UCLA AD Martin Jarmond talks about the importance of the Bruins playing North Carolina Central yesterday on the gridiron, and the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch notes Jarmond’s mom and dad attended NCCU and North Carolina A&T, respectively. Jarmond also earned a postgraduate scholarship named after John McLendon, the former NCCU men’s basketball coach and iconic civil rights advocate, after being encouraged to apply by former UNC Wilmington Men’s Basketball HC Jerry Wainwright, who coached Jarmond in college. Jarmond’s father, Matt, tells Bolch: “That was the jumping-off point. Now, just suppose the coach took that bulletin or that notice of the application and its requirements and timeline and threw it in the trash can. Who knows where Martin would be today? Because he certainly would not have applied for the McLendon scholarship, you know what I mean?” Martin Jarmond adds: “I wouldn’t be where I am today in this profession without John McLendon. Getting that scholarship changed the trajectory of my life.” Lots more on Jarmond. (link)

Clemson AD Graham Neff caught up with the ACC Network’s ACC PM Show about what it’s like to slide over one spot from Deputy AD to AD: “I felt so prepared, and certainly a testament to (current Miami AD) Dan (Radakovich) and our leadership here, President (Jim) Clements, for that shift over. But it is a heavy shift, whether it is a headset or an office. And listen, our industry continues to change. There has never been a more dynamic time in college athletics and that means so many things — NIL, transfer portal, federal changes, college football expansion. So as much as I felt prepared for the job, particularly at Clemson let alone just from experience, it is just a different job even compared with two years ago. I feel so comforted and confident because of that support system around while trying to move the one-offs over and the weight and obligation of that.” (link)

Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz visits with Mountain West Deputy Commissioner Bret Gilliland to cover ground on how the league is managing the threat of sports wagering, specifically with its new partnership with Prohibet. Gilliland: “The majority of the issues we’ve seen in the last few months are about inappropriate wagering by individual student-athletes or coaches who are not supposed to be involved in this space. … We’re trying to provide a vehicle to help our student-athletes, coaches and others avoid these mistakes.” On the topic of data rights, Gilliland: “Every event that we create, we’re creating data out of it. People are capturing that data and utilizing it to their benefit. We should be controlling that just as we are controlling our media rights. … What that looks like from a partnership monetization standpoint remains to be seen.” Full convo is available on Connect. The Business of College Sports’ Kristi Dosh goes deeper on the relationship & business outcomes between Colorado, Buffs FB HC Deion Sanders & eyewear company Blenders, which moved $1.2M worth of product on Friday upon launch of its Prime line of sunglasses. Each pair retails for $67 & naturally there are black & gold color options. (link)

Stratechery’s Ben Thompson seeks to answer the question of who won the ESPN-Charter disputes and concludes that “the answer depends on your perspective: are you asking about this specific stand-off, the overall future of TV, or the entire arc of video?” In regards to the current standoff, Thompson crowns Charter as the “unequivocal winner” due largely to the fact that “Disney has been forced to give up its attempt at double-dipping: no longer can the company get paid by Charter for channels and charge subscribers directly for what is generally the same general entertainment content.” Thompson believes, though, that Disney is the winner when it comes to the future of TV and explains that “the obstacle to the company doing the right thing for the long-term health of their business was not Charter, it was Disney’s own management, and Charter did the company the tremendous favor of forcing it to give up an unsustainable double-dipping strategy and take a step into a future of re-bundling. Charter, meanwhile, knows better than anyone the value of bundles: the more services it can tie into a single billing statement the stickier their offering is for end users. Yes, the company may have been willing to give up video, but it is stronger for having it.” In the overall arc of video, Thompson declares consumers as the winners, as they “will soon have the option to get nearly all of their entertainment on an a la carte basis, particularly once the ESPN streaming service launches, even as they have access to a bundle that includes nearly all of their entertainment for a lower price than if they subscribed individually.” Lots more. It’s Personnel…
+ Former Tennessee Associate AD for Strategic Communications Tom Satkowiak left his position with the Vols for the role of senior communications consultant for the Tennessee Valley Authority’s east region. (link)
+ Mike Lucas, who spent 30 years as the radio color commentator for Wisconsin football, says he “got kicked to the curb by [Badgers AD] Chris McIntosh, my radio assignment, and along with my writing for the UWBadgers.com. … It’s their prerogative to pick who they want in the booth, and they wanted jocks in the booth. Which is fine. I’m fine by that. But handle it with dignity, handle it with class, handle it with a little professionalism. Don’t be callous. Don’t be cowardly.” Lucas goes on to remark: “This is not about grievance. But I felt in fairness to some people who still thought I retired, but in fact I was retired, I thought it was important just to get it out there. Now that it’s out there, it’s done; like I said, I’m playing the cards I have in my hand, and I’m glad to be doing so.” (link)

USC Football HC Lincoln Riley says after becoming a head coach at the age of 33, “my mindset was always like, 'If I can make it to 50.' Because there [are] other things I want to do. I don't even know exactly what they are. I don't know that I have the list right now. But I just know there's other things I want to do and experience. And I may have a different tune when I get to 49, but I don't care a lot about legacy. I don't care, in terms of how many games you won. I've never cared about that. Whenever I'm on my deathbed, I don't think I'm gonna give a damn about how many games I won, or if I have a statue." (link)

Colorado isn’t the only football program that experienced a complete roster overhaul. Texas State, under new HC G.J. Kinne, did the same with 53 new scholarship student-athletes in San Marcos (39 were transfers). The Bobcats improved to 2-1 last night with a win over Jackson State & Kinne spoke to Sports Illustrated’s Richard Johnson earlier in the week on his roster-building process: “I’m doing Google searches on every kid, I’m doing deep Twitter searches on every kid on Instagram, Twitter, I’m doing everything I possibly can and talking to as many coaches. That’s one thing about me . . . being in different spots and being in the NFL and being a college like different schools . . . I tend to know someone on staff and I tend to know if I trust this guy or I don’t trust this guy. We’re always calling multiple people and, and sometimes, you know, people will tell you the truth and sometimes you have to filter stuff out. Like, can you really play? I think that’s the hardest thing in the portal to figure out . . . is this kid getting run off because he’s really not good? Or is this kid just not a good system fit for them? Is this kid just a ‘he can’t play at OU, but he can play at Texas State?’” (link)

A study by researchers at Troy, Massachusetts, and the College Sport Research Institute (CSRI) finds that Black football ACs are tasked with greater recruiting responsibilities than white ACs yet are compensated significantly less. To wit, the report states that among the recruiting classes of 2019 and 2020, Black ACs in the Power 5 held greater responsibility for recruiting higher-rated prospects and Black recruits overall. During the same period, white ACs were responsible for recruiting lower-rated prospects and over 80% of white recruits overall. At the same time, the Black ACs’ salaries averaged $387,476 over the two-year sample while the white ACs averaged $511,484. From the study’s authors: “Among the top 10 assistant coaches responsible for signing the best recruits in the class of 2023, seven are Black. Two of the three white coaches -- Charles Kelly and Brian Hartline -- were promoted to coordinator roles this offseason, positioning them as likely head coaching candidates in the coming years. None of the seven Black coaches serve as coordinators and none have been promoted this offseason. … Recruiting may be the ‘lifeblood’ of college sports, but it appears to only sustain the further advancement of white coaches.” (link)

If it seems like another record involving women’s sports is broken every day, it’s because it kind of is. In the past month, we’ve watched Volleyball Day in Nebraska pack 92,003 fans into Memorial Stadium, LSU Women’s Basketball HC Kim Mulkey sign a 10-year, $36M contract, and Connecticut women’s basketball star Paige Bueckers ink a multiyear NIL deal with Nike that could carry over into her professional career. In the past year we’ve seen record viewership for the Women’s Final Four, staggering ratings for the U.S. Women’s National Team in the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and a Women’s College World Series that drew as many viewers as the Men’s CWS, just to name a few. It’s not just viewership numbers. According to Opendorse data, male student-athletes account for 60% of all NIL transactions while females account for 40%; however, if football rosters are removed from the equation, those numbers are reversed, with women participating in 60% of all deals. At the same time, college athletics departments across the country continue investing in facilities for women’s sports. Wake Forest, for example, recently opened the Dr. Caryl Guth Women's Basketball Clubhouse and continues to invest in improvements for multiple facilities for its national championship winning Women’s Golf team. At Kansas State, the Wildcats recently unveiled the volleyball team’s brand new Morgan Family Arena. Where do women’s college sports go next? NCAA President Charlie Baker has been intentionally tight-lipped about whether championship rights in increasingly high-profile sports like women’s basketball and volleyball will hit the market as standalone products. So, that piece of the puzzle remains to be determined, but as The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach recently put it: “The reason we’ve seen so many TV networks and athletic departments invest in women’s sports recently is because it’s smart business. These are areas with growth potential. They’re not charity cases.”

Toledo AD Bryan Blair and Executive Assoc. AD/COO/SWA Nicole Alderson join Connect/MB Sports’ Matt Banker to discuss the Rise Together strategic plan, what national success looks like for the Rockets, the department’s efforts to develop and retain talent, the stability of the MAC during a time of realignment and more. Blair talks about the process of getting buy-in from stakeholders throughout the department: “I think in a lot of ways for us here Toledo it was kind of a blank slate. I don't think they had done a plan in a long time, or maybe even in forever. So, there was some level of excitement – probably surprisingly, to me – on the process of going through and defining the strategic plan in a really comprehensive way. Nicole and I talked, we sent a survey out to our fans and we kind of expected a low hit rate – okay, who's going to get excited about a strategic planning survey? We were blown away by the number of responses we got from all facets of the community and campus to say, ‘Hey, here's things that you do really well, here's some things we wish you work on,’ and I'd say the vast majority was really constructive criticism on ways we can intentionally get better. I think when people get a chance to feel like they're part of something larger than themselves and their individual roles, to me that's when something special can happen.” Lots more in the full video on Connect. JohnCanzano.com’s namesake takes the Pac-12 leadership to task, stating the league’s leadership has come from the courts as there are key issues to be addressed for this year and beyond. The employee retention plan approved by all earlier this week includes “optionality for OSU and WSU to reconstitute the conference after July 1, 2024,” as he reports two schools signed the Apple media rights deal last month. Canzano writes: “The two that Kliavkoff should be providing concierge-level service to right now. But given how upset OSU and WSU were with the commissioner in the wake of that unforgettable Friday meltdown I wonder if he thinks their first order of business would be to terminate him. Both schools tell me Kliavkoff is not involved in their plans to move forward. I’m not a legal expert. But I’ve reached out to several in recent days. I can’t find anyone who has a solid notion that a court will come down against WSU and Oregon State on the matter of board composition. I also think there’s a reasonable expectation that the 10 departing members should be treated fairly by the Beavers and Cougars.” As for the next legal step, Canzano reports a preliminary hearing and discovery are on the docket, concluding: “Do the Pac-12 presidents and chancellors really want to reveal documents and their private correspondence? Do they want the term sheets involved with their new media-rights deals to go public? What else might get some sunshine? It’s why I smell a settlement coming. One that will draw some clear boundaries and let everyone get focused again. As one Pac-12 executive told me on Thursday: ‘I’ll bet the Big Ten, FOX and Big 12 all don’t want discovery either.’” (link)

Neither Michigan State Interim President Teresa Woodruff nor chair of the MSU Board of Trustees, Rema Vassar, will say whether they would support an investigation into who at the school may have played a role in leaking the identity of Brenda Tracy. Earlier this week, after Tracy said someone gave her name to the media, Trustee Dianne Byrum released a statement asking that the university “thoroughly investigate” the accusation. (link)

Bert Neff, the man at the center of investigations into suspicious bets on the LSU vs. Alabama baseball game this past spring, has been added to the Indiana Gaming Commission’s involuntary exclusion list, which permanently bars him from entering any casino or placing bets with a sportsbook in the state. According to ESPN’s Paula Lavigne and David Purdum, “Neff is a subject in ongoing investigations in Indiana as well as by the NCAA and gaming regulators in Ohio, according to multiple sources who have been briefed on the matter. The Indiana Gaming Commission has also been investigating additional bets on LSU in the game in question that were placed with the state's sportsbooks.” Lavigne and Purdum also report Neff had consistent communication with former Cincinnati Baseball HC Scott Googins, though Googins never responded to Neff’s texts about his gambling pursuits. Neff’s attorney says he does not believe the communications between the two played a role in Googins’ exit from the program. At one point Neff’s text to Googins included, “They shouldn't not be letting people bet on college sports [...] kids are betting them at a rate that's disturbing and it's going to come out soon how widespread it is.” More. Lots of eyeballs will be on sunglasses, hats & handshakes after the Colorado-Colorado State gridiron matchup today & Sports Illustrated’s Richard Johnson goes in on how Blenders eyewear is riding the Coach Prime wave. Blenders initially did a deal with Deion Sanders back in the spring & as luck would have it the company was already planning to put its Prime 21 line on public sale this Friday. Then Rams HC Jay Norvell fed the media machine this week with his comments about how he was brought up to take off his sunglasses & hat to shake hands after a game in an obvious snipe at Sanders. Blenders CEO Chase Fisher: “I’ve personally never received more calls, texts, emails or DMs in my entire 11 years [with Blenders] in one day than I have in the last, you know, 24 hours to two weeks. Honestly, I have people calling me from high school that I haven’t talked with in 15 years, they turn on the TV dealing with wearing Blenders like ‘What the hell? How does that happen?’ And so it’s been truly profound. I mean, it’s been earth shattering in terms of the amount of interest and curiosity and eyeballs and interest around the brand, which is just super exciting.” (link)

Troy continues to invest in Baseball as enhancements to Riddle-Pace Field are nearly complete. D1Baseball’s Kendall Rogers shares pictures of the new entry plaza, plus new chairback seating. The upgrades also include new coaches offices, team meeting space, donor club & more. CollegeAD reports Trojans HC Skylar Meade has inked a new deal that makes him one of the four highest-paid HCs in the Sun Belt. Sounds like there’s also plans for further upgrades to the facility with a coming focus on student-athlete areas such as an expanded locker room, dedicated nutrition space, pro locker room, etc. (link, link)

The Patriot League recently held an orientation for the Diverse Talent Pathway Program, which seeks to identify and develop ethnic minority talent aspiring to become HCs, ADs and senior administrators. Through the program, members are matched with and mentored by HCs or senior administrators from different institutions. They also learn from institutional and league leaders during quarterly virtual check-ins. Commissioner Jennifer Heppel: "Since the founding of the Patriot League Anti-Racism Commission, an identified priority has been to provide development opportunities for our Black and Brown student-athletes, coaches and staff. We believe the formation of the Diverse Talent Pathway program is another small step toward our commitment to ensuring fairness, equitable opportunities, benefits and resources at our member institutions." Kansas men’s basketball student-athlete Arterio Morris has been suspended from the program. While the Jayhawks “have no further comment” beyond confirming the suspension, a second source confirmed to the Kansas City Star’s Shreyas Laddha that there is an allegation of rape against Morris that was reported to the KU police department in late August. Also from Laddha: “KU men’s basketball players Johnny Furphy and Elmarko Jackson are listed on the incident report as witnesses. KU basketball’s Nick Timberlake is also listed, under ‘other.’ … A source with knowledge of the situation said the men’s basketball players listed as witnesses or ‘other’ on the incident report were interviewed after the fact and ‘not involved in the incident at all. They are not under investigation or anything like that remotely.’” (link)

The facility will serve as HQ for the U.S. Soccer Federation and create a central hub for the entire soccer community, including coaches and referees.
