Ahead of tomorrow’s DIII Business Session, the DIII Management Council agreed to refer the proposal for Stunt as an emerging sport back to the Committee on Women’s Athletics. The Management Council also supported the creation of an advisory group to assist NCAA staff with the implementation of a federated process for playing rules that would consist of one Championships Committee member, one Management Council member, one PROP member, one Strategic Planning and Finance Committee member, one AD and one Commissioner. This will be under consideration by the Management Council in April when the PROP will “likely request that divisional governance bodies pursue the appropriate legislative actions to eliminate the requirement that playing rules shall be common for all divisions of the NCAA.” The Management and Presidents Councils discussed and supported a new Financial and Risk Management Working Group to review DIII’s financial standing and “evaluate threats and risks to the division’s revenue.” More. The Athletic’s Auerbach reports Baylor (DI) President/NCAA Board of Governors Chair Livingstone spent a great deal of time at the NCAA Convention emphasizing the need for a federal solution to the problems facing college athletics: “Several states are right now considering legislation that would mandate a vastly changed relationship between school and its students. Congress is really the only entity that can affirm student-athletes’ unique status. We have to ensure that Congress understands what’s at stake and motivate them to act. Second, we need a safe harbor for a certain degree of antitrust complaints. We’re not looking for nor do we actually need broad antitrust exemption; we do need the ability to make common-sense rules without limitless threats of litigation.” Incoming NCAA President Baker: “There are 1,100 universities and colleges in the U.S. that participate significantly in college athletics, and I think many of them were really concerned about their future. Most of those schools have really solid relationships with a lot of the people who serve in elected office.” (link, link)

Concordia Chicago MBB HC Kollar will return in the coming weeks after being “temporarily removed” following five S-As being hospitalized earlier this month. AD Gnan: “We believe the intensity of the practice contributed to the students' illness when combined with other factors including, but not limited to, an immediate return to full activity after an extended break, cross-country travel, rest, hydration and nutrition. The University and athletic administration has full confidence in Coach Kollar and believes that he has the best interests of our student-athletes in mind.” (link)
