The Bay Area News Group’s Jon Wilner obtained letters from Oregon & Washington sent to the Pac-12 that indicate neither expected to be a decision-making party for league business after August 1 of next year. The admission, per Wilner, could be interpreted as “notice of withdrawal” from the league, which is a key point in the legal filings by Washington State & Oregon State. Notable from a source: “Every dollar spent now is one dollar less that would be available to Washington State and Oregon State.” Further, when UCLA, USC & Colorado opted to move on, CEOs from each institution did not participate in Board meetings and/or were removed from the Board altogether. Wilner: “Now, just two schools remain. The Cougars and Beavers are mulling whether to rebuild the Pac-12 — a decision that hinges, to a large extent, on the assets available in the Pac-12. The board controls the assets, but which schools control the board? All 12, or just the remaining two?” (link)

Gardner-Webb AD Andrew Goodrich joins AthleticDirectorU’s Bryan Fischer to reflect on his first year on the job and the intricacies of the role, including establishing relationships with key stakeholders, aligning with a president and other campus leaders and creating consensus and buy-in from a new staff. Goodrich also shares the core beliefs he’s developed for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, emphasizing that among all else, having a healthy culture is the key to long-term success. “Resources are important. Talent is important. But they are not the most important things. A healthy culture is the most important thing you can have, and you know the analogy is imagine: Would you rather have a significant amount of money or would you have great health? Because if you had a significant amount of money, but your body was failing and you weren't going to last much longer, what good is the money? The same concept can be applied to your department. It doesn't matter if you've got talent and resources if you don't have organizational health, which we kind of define as making principled decisions, not political ones, treating people with respect and having passion for what you want to do.” Lots more from Goodrich in the full interview. Social n Sport’s Jessica Smith offers some advice on how sports organizations should measure social media goals. Smith explains that setting YoY goals for engagements, impressions, followers and other metrics are good to keep track of but “living and breathing by these metrics and thinking they are a key indicator of good work is a miss.” For one, there are too many uncontrollable variables associated with sports, especially winning & losing. Smith advises that any “goal-setting initiative should start with the overall organizational goals. What is the business trying to achieve, and how can social and content support those?” For instance, if increasing revenue is the goal, then an objective might be: “Create a digital playbook for the sponsorship team by Q1 that features sellable assets to assist sales efforts.” Smith closes: “Don’t get caught up in the rat race of trying to reach x number of total impressions in a season. Anyone can play that game, but the strongest social teams play the game of achieving goals and objectives that actually map back to the business.” (link)

Participation in high school football is on the rebound, per the Wall Street Journal’s Rachel Bachman, who reports that “turnout of boys for high school football rose 5.6% last year.” The information comes from the National Federation of State High School Associations, and Bachman notes: “While participation remains well below the sport’s peak about 15 years ago, its gains last year surpassed the post-Covid rebound of popular fall sports including boys soccer (3.2%) and girls’ volleyball (3.6%). Football also bested the 3% average increase across all high school sports from 2021 to 2022.” Nationwide, the number of boys playing 11-on-11 football is still down 7.5% from its peak of 1.112M in 2008-09. Meanwhile, the number of girls and boys ages 5-17 on NFL Flag teams jumped from 300K in 2019 to a projected 750K this fall. (link)

Additionally, the thresholds for silver, gold, platinum and diamond medallions will increase in each of the next two years, and The Points Guy’s Zach Griff notes status requirements are increasing by 75% for Diamond Medallion members, 50% for Platinum and Gold Medallion members and 100% for Silver Medallion members year over year. Relative to 2023, these increases will total 133% for Diamond Medallion status. Also starting January 1, Million Miler earnings will be based on how many miles individuals actually fly with Delta and its partners, and there will be no more bonuses for more expensive fares or higher fare classes. If it seems like another record involving women’s sports is broken every day, it’s because it kind of is. In the past month, we’ve watched Volleyball Day in Nebraska pack 92,003 fans into Memorial Stadium, LSU Women’s Basketball HC Kim Mulkey sign a 10-year, $36M contract, and Connecticut women’s basketball star Paige Bueckers ink a multiyear NIL deal with Nike that could carry over into her professional career. In the past year we’ve seen record viewership for the Women’s Final Four, staggering ratings for the U.S. Women’s National Team in the FIFA Women’s World Cup, and a Women’s College World Series that drew as many viewers as the Men’s CWS, just to name a few. It’s not just viewership numbers. According to Opendorse data, male student-athletes account for 60% of all NIL transactions while females account for 40%; however, if football rosters are removed from the equation, those numbers are reversed, with women participating in 60% of all deals. At the same time, college athletics departments across the country continue investing in facilities for women’s sports. Wake Forest, for example, recently opened the Dr. Caryl Guth Women's Basketball Clubhouse and continues to invest in improvements for multiple facilities for its national championship winning Women’s Golf team. At Kansas State, the Wildcats recently unveiled the volleyball team’s brand new Morgan Family Arena. Where do women’s college sports go next? NCAA President Charlie Baker has been intentionally tight-lipped about whether championship rights in increasingly high-profile sports like women’s basketball and volleyball will hit the market as standalone products. So, that piece of the puzzle remains to be determined, but as The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach recently put it: “The reason we’ve seen so many TV networks and athletic departments invest in women’s sports recently is because it’s smart business. These are areas with growth potential. They’re not charity cases.”

UCLA AD Martin Jarmond talks about the importance of the Bruins playing North Carolina Central yesterday on the gridiron, and the Los Angeles Times’ Ben Bolch notes Jarmond’s mom and dad attended NCCU and North Carolina A&T, respectively. Jarmond also earned a postgraduate scholarship named after John McLendon, the former NCCU men’s basketball coach and iconic civil rights advocate, after being encouraged to apply by former UNC Wilmington Men’s Basketball HC Jerry Wainwright, who coached Jarmond in college. Jarmond’s father, Matt, tells Bolch: “That was the jumping-off point. Now, just suppose the coach took that bulletin or that notice of the application and its requirements and timeline and threw it in the trash can. Who knows where Martin would be today? Because he certainly would not have applied for the McLendon scholarship, you know what I mean?” Martin Jarmond adds: “I wouldn’t be where I am today in this profession without John McLendon. Getting that scholarship changed the trajectory of my life.” Lots more on Jarmond. (link)

Clemson AD Graham Neff caught up with the ACC Network’s ACC PM Show about what it’s like to slide over one spot from Deputy AD to AD: “I felt so prepared, and certainly a testament to (current Miami AD) Dan (Radakovich) and our leadership here, President (Jim) Clements, for that shift over. But it is a heavy shift, whether it is a headset or an office. And listen, our industry continues to change. There has never been a more dynamic time in college athletics and that means so many things — NIL, transfer portal, federal changes, college football expansion. So as much as I felt prepared for the job, particularly at Clemson let alone just from experience, it is just a different job even compared with two years ago. I feel so comforted and confident because of that support system around while trying to move the one-offs over and the weight and obligation of that.” (link)

Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz visits with Mountain West Deputy Commissioner Bret Gilliland to cover ground on how the league is managing the threat of sports wagering, specifically with its new partnership with Prohibet. Gilliland: “The majority of the issues we’ve seen in the last few months are about inappropriate wagering by individual student-athletes or coaches who are not supposed to be involved in this space. … We’re trying to provide a vehicle to help our student-athletes, coaches and others avoid these mistakes.” On the topic of data rights, Gilliland: “Every event that we create, we’re creating data out of it. People are capturing that data and utilizing it to their benefit. We should be controlling that just as we are controlling our media rights. … What that looks like from a partnership monetization standpoint remains to be seen.” Full convo is available on Connect. Stratechery’s Ben Thompson seeks to answer the question of who won the ESPN-Charter disputes and concludes that “the answer depends on your perspective: are you asking about this specific stand-off, the overall future of TV, or the entire arc of video?” In regards to the current standoff, Thompson crowns Charter as the “unequivocal winner” due largely to the fact that “Disney has been forced to give up its attempt at double-dipping: no longer can the company get paid by Charter for channels and charge subscribers directly for what is generally the same general entertainment content.” Thompson believes, though, that Disney is the winner when it comes to the future of TV and explains that “the obstacle to the company doing the right thing for the long-term health of their business was not Charter, it was Disney’s own management, and Charter did the company the tremendous favor of forcing it to give up an unsustainable double-dipping strategy and take a step into a future of re-bundling. Charter, meanwhile, knows better than anyone the value of bundles: the more services it can tie into a single billing statement the stickier their offering is for end users. Yes, the company may have been willing to give up video, but it is stronger for having it.” In the overall arc of video, Thompson declares consumers as the winners, as they “will soon have the option to get nearly all of their entertainment on an a la carte basis, particularly once the ESPN streaming service launches, even as they have access to a bundle that includes nearly all of their entertainment for a lower price than if they subscribed individually.” Lots more. + Former Tennessee Associate AD for Strategic Communications Tom Satkowiak left his position with the Vols for the role of senior communications consultant for the Tennessee Valley Authority’s east region. (link)
+ Mike Lucas, who spent 30 years as the radio color commentator for Wisconsin football, says he “got kicked to the curb by [Badgers AD] Chris McIntosh, my radio assignment, and along with my writing for the UWBadgers.com. … It’s their prerogative to pick who they want in the booth, and they wanted jocks in the booth. Which is fine. I’m fine by that. But handle it with dignity, handle it with class, handle it with a little professionalism. Don’t be callous. Don’t be cowardly.” Lucas goes on to remark: “This is not about grievance. But I felt in fairness to some people who still thought I retired, but in fact I was retired, I thought it was important just to get it out there. Now that it’s out there, it’s done; like I said, I’m playing the cards I have in my hand, and I’m glad to be doing so.” (link)

USC Football HC Lincoln Riley says after becoming a head coach at the age of 33, “my mindset was always like, 'If I can make it to 50.' Because there [are] other things I want to do. I don't even know exactly what they are. I don't know that I have the list right now. But I just know there's other things I want to do and experience. And I may have a different tune when I get to 49, but I don't care a lot about legacy. I don't care, in terms of how many games you won. I've never cared about that. Whenever I'm on my deathbed, I don't think I'm gonna give a damn about how many games I won, or if I have a statue." (link)

Colorado isn’t the only football program that experienced a complete roster overhaul. Texas State, under new HC G.J. Kinne, did the same with 53 new scholarship student-athletes in San Marcos (39 were transfers). The Bobcats improved to 2-1 last night with a win over Jackson State & Kinne spoke to Sports Illustrated’s Richard Johnson earlier in the week on his roster-building process: “I’m doing Google searches on every kid, I’m doing deep Twitter searches on every kid on Instagram, Twitter, I’m doing everything I possibly can and talking to as many coaches. That’s one thing about me . . . being in different spots and being in the NFL and being a college like different schools . . . I tend to know someone on staff and I tend to know if I trust this guy or I don’t trust this guy. We’re always calling multiple people and, and sometimes, you know, people will tell you the truth and sometimes you have to filter stuff out. Like, can you really play? I think that’s the hardest thing in the portal to figure out . . . is this kid getting run off because he’s really not good? Or is this kid just not a good system fit for them? Is this kid just a ‘he can’t play at OU, but he can play at Texas State?’” (link)

A study by researchers at Troy, Massachusetts, and the College Sport Research Institute (CSRI) finds that Black football ACs are tasked with greater recruiting responsibilities than white ACs yet are compensated significantly less. To wit, the report states that among the recruiting classes of 2019 and 2020, Black ACs in the Power 5 held greater responsibility for recruiting higher-rated prospects and Black recruits overall. During the same period, white ACs were responsible for recruiting lower-rated prospects and over 80% of white recruits overall. At the same time, the Black ACs’ salaries averaged $387,476 over the two-year sample while the white ACs averaged $511,484. From the study’s authors: “Among the top 10 assistant coaches responsible for signing the best recruits in the class of 2023, seven are Black. Two of the three white coaches -- Charles Kelly and Brian Hartline -- were promoted to coordinator roles this offseason, positioning them as likely head coaching candidates in the coming years. None of the seven Black coaches serve as coordinators and none have been promoted this offseason. … Recruiting may be the ‘lifeblood’ of college sports, but it appears to only sustain the further advancement of white coaches.” (link)
