Women Leaders in Sports & the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State (DI) have released the annual review of career trajectories of DI, DII & DIII Athletic Directors. Some notable DII findings: “The percentage of newly hired female ADs went up from 24.6% in 2022 to 37.5% (15 out of 40) in 2023. […] There was a significant drop in ADs going from college athletics to an AD position in the newly hired category. The percentage dropped from 88.5% to 67.5%. […] Among newly hired ADs the percentage of master’s degrees dropped from 82.0% to 70.0%. The percentage of MBAs rose from 9.8% to 15.0%. […] College coaching experience went up from 48.1% to 59.4% in 2023. […] There was an increase in White female ADs from 87.7% to 89.7%.” More. (link)

U.S. Representatives David Kustoff (R-TN), Burgess Owens (R-UT) and Josh Harder (D-CA) have reintroduced the NCAA Accountability Act, which would establish due process protections for individuals and universities under investigation for rule infractions. Specifically, the bill would require the NCAA to give fair notice of enforcement proceedings, establish a two-year statute of limitation for infractions, require investigations be completed within one year and prohibit information from confidential sources from being used in NCAA enforcement decisions. Additionally, the bill would give universities the right to settle disputes through arbitration, requires the NCAA to be fair in its enforcement proceedings, and directs the association to give the Department of Justice an annual report on its enforcement proceedings. A release from Kustoff’s office asserts that “through its monopoly power and lack of oversight, the NCAA investigates and punishes its members with little regard for fairness, due process, or transparency.” Kustoff adds: “It’s time Congress holds them accountable.” (link)

Participation in high school football is on the rebound, per the Wall Street Journal’s Rachel Bachman, who reports that “turnout of boys for high school football rose 5.6% last year.” The information comes from the National Federation of State High School Associations, and Bachman notes: “While participation remains well below the sport’s peak about 15 years ago, its gains last year surpassed the post-Covid rebound of popular fall sports including boys soccer (3.2%) and girls’ volleyball (3.6%). Football also bested the 3% average increase across all high school sports from 2021 to 2022.” Nationwide, the number of boys playing 11-on-11 football is still down 7.5% from its peak of 1.112M in 2008-09. Meanwhile, the number of girls and boys ages 5-17 on NFL Flag teams jumped from 300K in 2019 to a projected 750K this fall. (link)

Former Bucknell (DI) President Brian Mitchell in an op-ed for Forbes asserts that “American higher education faces an existential crisis. Boards, administrators and faculty must wake up to the new realities that they face. For trustees, it may be too late to use an incremental band-aid. If the wounds are too deep, boards have a fiduciary obligation to plot a new strategy in an era of rising deficits to modify what the college offers, locate new revenue, seek new partnerships and affiliations, and merge or close. The goal must not be to postpone planning until the institution’s value is reduced to a real estate sale.” Mitchell suggests several steps that governing boards and campus CEOs can take, including adopting an activist approach that is strategic rather than tactical; familiarizing themselves with potential threats; exploring partnerships; and thoughtfully navigating closures and mergers. “From my perspective, solutions that overwhelmingly rely on outdated funding mechanisms like tuition no longer work. Large endowments might allow some leadership to kick the can down the road, but there is an endpoint to this approach for all but a handful of the wealthiest places.” More from Mitchell. (link)
