Several ADs spoke during today’s NIL hearing before the House Committee on Small Business, and Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger sums it up like this: “Nothing new. Same topics. The NIL focus should be on the Senate Commerce Committee, where Sens. Maria Cantwell, Ted Cruz & Cory Booker are working to reach a compromise.” Dellenger does note that Ohio State AD Gene Smith nailed “maybe the biggest problem” with the NCAA when he remarked: “There are 350 DI schools and the way they are financed are very different. Some schools are funded through student fees. Ohio State is not. We are a different beast. We don’t have the same issues. The diversity is significant." There’s also this from Smith: “A practice of asking a school for a fee to simply visit campus has emerged; asking for $5,000 just to visit has become common.” Asked by Congressman Aaron Bean (R-FL) to rate on a scale of 1-10 their confidence in the NCAA’s ability to handle NIL without congressional oversight, both Smith and TCU AD Jeremiah Donati indicated they were at a four. More from Dellenger (link) and On3’s Pete Nakos (link); Meanwhile, Congressman Morgan McGarvey (D-KY) asked: “Is the NCAA so inept right now that this is something Congress must legislate? The News & Observer’s Andrew Carter notes McGarvey was “also the only one (so far) to bring up expansion and realignment, and its effect on athletes. The thing about these hearings that always becomes very clear is that most Congress members don't have much of a grasp on the state of college athletics.” (link)

Washington State President Kirk Schulz doesn’t expect there to be any “direct impacts on academic budgets due to a change in conference affiliation. However, there will certainly be significant changes in our athletics budget since we will not receive the same level of media-rights funding in the future as we received from the Pac‑12 Conference previously. Any potential reductions as a result of this change in media-rights funding will be reflected in the athletics operating budget in FY25.” Schulz also explains the current athletic department deficit is “covered by university reserves and as such is not money owed to anyone outside of Washington State University. Because of reporting requirements and state regulations that prohibit the use of state funds for intercollegiate athletics, we must maintain sufficient non‑tuition reserve funds to internally cover this deficit balance.” Full Q&A. Should Oregon State and Washington State choose to become a two-team conference and attempt to put together a 2024 football schedule, Gridiron Founder/President Dave Brown tells JohnCanzano.com’s namesake: “It’s not the easiest thing in the world, but it can be done. We’d fully expect to be able to do this successfully.” Canzano notes other options remain for OSU and WSU, but “I’m told the schools are exploring what life would be like as a conference of two for one football season” as the NCAA allows for a two-year grace period for conferences to get back to eight schools. More from Brown: “There’s some stuff out there that’s available today. That’s what you start with. You start with the people who say ‘yes’ today who have a need. Then you move to what I’d call ‘trades.’” Canzano explains those trades would involve OSU and/or WSU offering to buy out a non-conference opponent on another team’s schedule. Brown believes there will be “some people motivated to help these guys. Nobody wants to see them in a bad spot.” (link)

Boston College has suspended its swimming & diving program indefinitely after determining that hazing occurred within the program. BC: “The University does not—and will not—tolerate hazing in any form. During the suspension, all Swimming and Diving student-athletes will continue to have access to academic and medical resources provided to all Boston College student-athletes.” (link)

Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick talks about the difficulty of keeping opposing fans from infiltrating Notre Dame Stadium in large numbers and tells The Athletic’s Pete Sampson: “We are just unique in a number of ways. The first way we’re unique is we simply have more people prepared to sell their ticket than a lot of other places do. And we know who’s selling them. It’s not a mystery. That underlying issue is hard to attack. The other is, and I’m hoping it’s a little less true for our friends from Columbus, but it’s such a bucket list trip for the visiting team.” Fighting Irish Senior Assoc. AD for Business Innovation and Revenue Generation Patrick Nowlin says there’s no “magic bullet” for keeping opposing fans from purchasing tickets, but the department is taking steps to incentivize ND fans not to sell. One fix is to ensure returned tickets are made available only to season ticket holders. Another has been moving up the purchase date for season tickets, the theory being that fans could have longer to consider buying them and season ticket holders are less likely to sell their tickets to opposing fans. Another notable facet of this is that Notre Dame’s season ticket base accounts for roughly 45% of the stadium. At other major programs, that number tends to be closer to 85%. Nowlin: “We’ve done everything we can to prevent it from being in that (Georgia) area. Our technology is there, our strategy is there. It’s gonna come down to making sure that our fans hang onto their tickets and come and support the team.” (link)

The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler weighs in on Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger’s idea to create a promotion/relegation system between the Pac-12 and Mountain West: “Great idea, but here's why it probably won't happen. It takes nine votes to dissolve the Mountain West so it can merge into the Pac-2. Under this plan, six would join the Pac-2 to form an eight-team upper division. So there's six votes. But how do you get the other three? If you're Wyoming or New Mexico or Utah State, do you vote for this knowing you'll be in the bottom tier and get less TV $? Or do you say no, force the six to leave the MW and each pay $17-34M exit fees, which you then get? Money talks.” (link)

SBJ’s Michael Smith asks whether another school could potentially follow SMU’s path to a Power 5 conference, noting the Mustangs “rode the perfect storm into the ACC. There were three clear factors that played out in the Mustangs’ favor – the money, the desire and an opportunity from the ACC.” Smith observes that “Liberty has the money, and perhaps the desire, but not the landing spot. Tulane has the resources but questionable enthusiasm to make such a move. The same could be said of Rice, which was a SWC member at the same time as SMU. But that combination of money and ego capable of dreaming up a move like SMU’s – and being able to afford it – is pretty rare. … Checking those three boxes seems much more likely for schools looking to jump from one Power Five conference to another, or to a P2 league (Big Ten, SEC), such as a Florida State jumping from the ACC to one of the P2 leagues. There are several schools in that line. Making an SMU-like leap from the AAC to the ACC -- that’s not nearly as likely to happen again.” (link)

Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders has filed for four trademarks, including the Prime Effect for coaching services and a production company; It’s Personal for clothing; Coach Prime for an online store that sells clothing and household goods; and Daddy Buck for clothing, The Action Network’s Darren Rovell reports, noting that items from Coach Prime’s playing days have ballooned in price in recent weeks. Rovell adds: “But is this hype sustainable? A massive issue with Sanders [trading] cards in particular is that they were produced during the junk wax era, when massive quantities were made over a short period of time. Those with perfectly slabbed cards are cashing in now, but if prices stay as they are, it's very possible PSA sees a flood of new Sanders cards that had been sitting around for years – many of which could be graded as 10s. This influx of supply – in addition to a die-down in interest – could see the market settle back to the…equilibrium we saw before Colorado became the story of the football season.” (link)

We extend our best wishes to LSU football student-athlete Greg Brooks, who underwent surgery to have a brain tumor removed. Asked whether he anticipated Brooks would play again this season, Tigers HC Brian Kelly indicated he wasn’t sure but when he saw Brooks before the surgery, the fifth-year safety had his mind made up. Kelly: “He was pretty clear about playing again this year. But that’s Greg Brooks.” (link)

The transition from Golfstat to Spikemark as collegiate golf’s new scoring and ranking system has been fraught with technological problems, per NBC Sports’ Brentley Romine, who reports coaches have been beset by slow load times, system crashes and other difficulties. Romine also notes the site briefly shut down after a reported cyberattack, and its live-scoring platform remains paused. “And while the new company scrambles to pick up the pieces, coaches, players and their supporters are left frustrated and uncertain about what comes next.” One “prominent person within the sport” says: “It’s bad. College golf is in jeopardy right now.” Transylvania (DIII) Men’s Golf Coach Brian Lane resorted to keeping score manually and posting the leaderboards of a tournament hosted by his team to social media. Spikemark CEO Derek Freeman acknowledged the problems, writing in an email to coaches: “To put it in terms we can all understand, basically we hit it OB off of the first tee, duffed the chip, and followed up with a nice three-putt.” As the company continues trying to sort out its issues, some coaches are wondering whether the NCAA should terminate the partnership, but Romine notes it’s not as simple as returning to Golfstat because, as one source says: “They fired everybody.” A progress report from Spikemark is expected by the end of this week.
