The DIII membership approved all resolutions and proposals, except one - the change to fall sports preseason acclimatization period. The changes to committee and council composition will be updated as of August 2023 and August 2024, respectively. DIII VP McCleary: "While no one can predict the future, I can assure that the governance structure is going to continue to be responsive and proactive as we meet the membership's needs." (link)

D1.ticker/Connect’s Fischer visited with Baylor President/NCAA Board of Governors Chair Livingstone at the 2023 NCAA Convention, shares more about the process that landed new NCAA President Baker the job, adds “He’s an unbelievably authentic leader. He listens, he asks good questions, people are going to really like working with him. And that makes it easier to address hard problems.” Asked specifically about how the NCAA’s dealings with the folks on Capitol Hill will change with Baker at the helm, Livingstone: “I think this is an opportunity for us to educate about these complexities. D3.ticker/Connect’s Fischer sits down with John Carroll AD/outgoing DIII Management Council Chair Morgan at the 2023 NCAA Convention in San Antonio to discuss how changes facing the industry are impacting DIII institutions and student-athletes specifically, including which recommendations from the Transformation Committee will trickle down to the DIII level and how incoming NCAA President Baker will work alongside DIII leaders. Regarding possible championship changes she would like to see at the DIII level, Morgan points out this year’s NCAA WBB Tournament will be a joint event between all three divisions and that conversations about resource allocation, event logistics and scheduling are a key focus: “The championships committee continues to talk about how do we elevate that experience, how are we creating similar environments across all of the different sport championships. We want to make sure that our student-athletes are having a world-class experience but also playing in front of and competing against not an empty stadium.” More, only on Connect. (link)

Four athletic trainers at Concordia Chicago have resigned following the university's decision to bring back MBB HC Kollar. CUC found no intent to harm from Kollar and that the student-athletes were diagnosed with a potentially fatal condition. (link)

The relationship between Britons MBB S-As and Albion is “strained,” according to three players who spoke anonymously with student newspaper, The Albion Pleiad, about the aftermath of HC May’s suspension following his use of the n-word at practice on December 28. The players point to the college’s handling of the suspension, with administrators pressuring the team to speak with May just hours before an away game on January 4: “They had coach May in the building before we even arrived. Knowing that, we knew there was no way we were going to get what we wanted.” Members of the team and their families met with President Calvaruso’s cabinet over the weekend before the full roster took the floor against Hope with May back on the sidelines. UChicago AD Torain and MSOC HC Sitch join MB Sports/Connect’s Banker to reflect on the team’s DIII National Championship following last season’s loss in the semifinal game. Torain talks through the decision-making process that led to the hiring of Sitch and the thoroughness of Sitch’s preparation for the interview process, noting: “Julianne came in with everything we needed plus… she was the first one that I interviewed… she kind of set the standard. She was the one to beat, to be honest.” Sitch elaborates on the transition of coaching women to coaching a men’s program, the value of adversity and the emotions of being a woman leading a men’s collegiate team. Rose-Hulman has launched the search for its next WBB HC, with AD Tweedy noting the program is looking for a coach “who is all about culture, someone who understands the current student-athlete of today. Especially at the Division III level, student-athletes are looking to be a part of a team … but also being able to academically be strong at the institution.” Regarding the decision to cancel the season following the December 3 loss to Transylvania, Tweedy explains the team had originally decided to “take it week-by-week” due to low roster numbers and that the squad was informed of the decision to end the season early before the game against Transylvania. Tweedy: “After our competition against DePauw [a 79-41 loss Nov. 27 at Greencastle], we had an injury [of a fairly serious nature] and we finished the game out. But, unfortunately, we were down to six student-athletes by the end of that weekend. So we had to really take a step back and ask ourselves, ‘Are we doing what’s best for our student-athletes by continuing the season?’ We had a lot of options on the table. But there was no option that was strong enough to say that this is going to end on a healthier note for our team.” (link)

After receiving what he describes as “easily the best paper” in his world religions class only to find out it was written by ChatGPT, Northern Michigan professor Aumann says he may forgo essays in subsequent semesters – or perhaps make them write the first drafts in class – and weave ChatGPT into lessons by asking students to evaluate the chatbot’s responses. “What’s happening in class is no longer going to be, ‘Here are some questions — let’s talk about it between us human beings,’” but rather “‘What also does this alien robot think?’” The AI innovation is forcing higher ed at large to rethink several of its modalities, as Florida Provost Glover explains that instead of targeting specific methods of cheating, “we try to institute general policies that certainly back up the faculty member’s authority to run a class. This isn’t going to be the last innovation we have to deal with.” (link)
