The Frontier Conference and North Star are exploring a merger, per The Billings Gazette’s Briar Napier. Conversations began more than a year ago regarding football, but have expanded as the NSAA membership is set to fall to six full members, four of whom play football, with the possibility of further exits as NSAA Commissioner Roger Ternes notes Viterbo has applied to join the CCAC. Frontier Commissioner Scott Crawford: "The Frontier Conference is very interested in what we would be able to do with as many of the North Star schools that are remaining (that) are interested in terms of full membership in the Frontier Conference. Very interested in what we can do in terms of football, but I just want to reiterate that this is so much more than that. ... It's so cliche, but there's strength in numbers, and to reinforce those numbers — not just in football, not just in basketball or volleyball — but to do that in cross country, track and field, golf is really valuable to us." As for the NSAA, Ternes notes the conference is also exploring options for its future including expansion, alliances or applying for NCAA membership, adding: “I think the preference of the group would be to remain in the NAIA, but we may not have the options with NCAA institutions surrounding us. We may have more options with the NCAA than in the NAIA.” Napier notes both leagues hope to have a better idea of the future by December. More. (link)

Portland State (NCAA DI)’s 81-7 loss to Oregon (NCAA DI) and 91-0 win over North American “tell a clear story about the economics of college sports and how things trickle down from the highest rungs of the ladder to the lowest,” Sports Illustrated’s Richard Johnson observes. The Vikings pocketed around $600K for their trip to Eugene, which Johnson notes is a “significant portion of the school’s $15M annual athletic budget. By comparison, the Ducks have an athletics budget of around $150M,” and Vikings AD John Johnson says: “You’ve got to play those games to put resources in your programs so you can grow your program. … That helps pay the bills for not football necessarily, but for the rest of our programs that aren’t revenue generating by nature.” On the other end of the spectrum, Portland State needed to fill a gap in the schedule on short notice, and team they found was NAU, who was “just as eager” for the $75K Portland State paid them as the Portland State was for the $600K from UO. NAU AD Kenneth Apende: “Great opportunity for us to be able to get back into our program, as far as the financial benefits that come from it. We also looked at it as a great opportunity for the kids to get an experience and their experience on a top level from traveling. And you know, as far as what the game day situation is, small schools don’t really get that opportunity to do that.” (link)

More Higher Ed:

+ Fitch Ratings predicts more colleges will close, merge or significantly restructure operations due to enrollment declines and market pressures such as wage growth and increases in energy costs. From a report released Wednesday: “The higher education landscape remains bifurcated. Institutions without strong brands that are located in markets with the steepest drop in college-aged population are the most vulnerable to enrollment declines. These markets also often have a multitude of public and private institutions competing vigorously for a shrinking pool of students.” The report also observes that “revenue growth prospects are relatively limited for now” at small, nonselective private colleges and some public regional universities. + More than 20 HBCU presidents have left their jobs since 2022, and Best Colleges’ Pamela “Safisha Nzingha” Hill cites several reasons for the trend, which include conflicts with governing boards, job demands, financial constraints and resource allocation. Former Dillard President Walter Kimbrough tells Hill: “The average candidate for a presidency really does not understand how hard the job is, especially in this political climate. People are sometimes too hungry to be a president without being discerning enough to know if that presidency is best for them.” More. (link)
