Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez covers several topics with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, including the league’s 2026 media rights negotiations, about which she says: “We’re looking at it as a tremendous opportunity because the market is a little bit down right now, and hopefully in two years we have a better environment to go to market. We also have two years which we’re working on a strategic plan that’s final dressed, been approved. We’re working on zhuzhing it up and rolling it out. We’re also under a brand analysis with a firm called Global Prairie really working on ‘OK, what is our brand? What is our brand positioning?’ and just bolstering our numbers and our value between now and going to market.” Nevarez also notes: “I think for us the next couple of years the goal is really about maintaining that access to the [College Football Playoff]. It was at 6-6 as far as [automatic qualifiers] vs. at-large. Perhaps it moves to 5-7 – that would be digestible. But definitely we need to have that access point into the expanded playoff.” Full Q&A. Navy AD Chet Gladchuk on the Anchors Aweigh podcast says of the state of college football: “It’s a sad state of affairs to be perfectly honest with you. [...] Chasing the dollar has been going on for a number of years. It’s not new. It started probably about 12 years ago with the breakup of the Big East, and the television intervention in realigning affiliations of the money has always been there.” Gladchuk also notes if “you take a look at Rutgers or you take a look at Maryland, you know, it's just difficult today to to watch the way the spirit of intercollegiate athletics as it is aligned with education, as it aligned with truly the welfare student athletes and the Integrity of Institutions has truly been diminished.” In the AAC, Gladchuk observes there is a “group of institutions that have a great upside. I think we have to be realistic in terms of our expectations as a conference and our involvements. Mike Aresco has done a magnificent job of trying to make certain a niche has been carved out for the American or any of the Group of 5 to realize an upside in the playoff system. But in reality, when you look at the schools that are in our league, it probably makes sense right where we are. I had conversations with the ACC probably about eight years ago…and it was just unrealistic in terms of the demands on the athletic program.” Lots more in the full podcast. (link)

USA Fencing CEO Phil Andrews tells SBJ’s Rachel Axon the impact of conference realignment could have significant ramifications for the U.S. Olympic team: “I don’t want to use hyperbole, but I feel like it needs to be treated as a massive crisis or potential crisis because it is a huge, huge area where the Olympic movement in the United States strongly benefits from the NCAA.” Stanford AD Bernard Muir adds: “If we’re not careful and if we’re only mindful of the revenue-generating programs, we could lose sight of what we have or this jewel that we have called the Olympic movement, and we want to make sure that’s just as prominent.” Axon points out that roughly 75% of the U.S. team in Tokyo in 2021 competed collegiately, as did nearly 85% of medalists in Rio in 2016. USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland finds some room for optimism, telling Axon: “The good news is we continue to hear a consistent and passionate commitment by athletic directors, university presidents, even conference commissioners around the future of Olympic and Paralympic sport on campuses.” As former Duke AD Kevin White puts it: “My strong opinion is we’ve got to find a way to keep both entities, the NCAA and Team USA, in a growth mode. We have a great story to tell. That’s the best ammunition we have.” (link)

Nevada SportsNet’s Chris Murray asks Nevada AD Stephanie Rempe whether NIL can be placed in a good or bad bucket, and Rempe replies: "I would say for college athletics it's in the bad, but for the student-athletes it's in the good, and that's why we're here and that's what it's about. I really do feel like most everybody is very supportive of the spirit of NIL, and so we think that's good for the student-athletes for sure." On the Wolf Pack’s position within the Mountain West, Rempe remarks: "I absolutely believe we're right where we need to be. There might be a couple of schools ahead of us in terms of sport by sport. We can always do more to educate our student-athletes. We can always do more to get out in the community and get businesses to participate. For sure, we need to grow in that space, but I don't feel like we're losing ground, and that is because of donors. That is because of our Nevada supporters. We have a group of about 10 people who have really allowed us to be successful and play in that space in a really, really effective way.” (link)

Attorneys for Michigan State Football HC Mel Tucker have formally responded to MSU’s written notice of its intention to terminate his contract for cause. The response reads, in part: “[Tucker] did not engage in unprofessional or unethical behavior or 'moral turpitude' by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, as discussed below, under Michigan law, assault and battery does not even constitute 'moral turpitude,' and the flimsy foundation of the university's finding – a private relationship involving mutual flirting and one instance of consensual phone sex – falls far short of the mark." ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports the full letter is 12 pages and concludes by asserting MSU lacks cause to terminate Tucker’s employment. “The above reasons are more than sufficient to refute the grounds for early termination set forth in the notice. We sincerely hope the university will take them seriously, if not because it cares about Tucker's rights, then because it cares about the limitless liability it will face over the private lives of its thousands of employees and faculty." More from Thamel. (link)

Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports the “commissioners of the NCAA’s four HBCU conferences sent a letter last week to the Congressional Black Caucus imploring them to pass legislation addressing NIL & athlete employment, which the commissioners say would have a ‘staggering impact’ on their schools.” From the letter: “Pending regulatory decisions and plaintiffs’ attorneys threaten to change the face of college sports without our voices, and more importantly, without the voices of the student-athletes being considered. … Like the majority of our Division II and mid-major peers, most HBCUs do not generate significant revenue and rely heavily on school-appropriated funds and donations. Therefore, classifying student-athletes as employees would have a staggering impact on our athletic programs and schools.” Full letter. (link)

Florida A&M President Larry Robinson has requested an additional $15M from the state’s Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency for FAMU's Bragg Memorial Stadium. Robinson: “Specifically, we are in need of an additional $15M from Blueprint's infrastructure funds to enhance some of the health and safety aspects of this community asset.” The Tallahassee Democrat’s Tarah Jean and Gerald Thomas III note that if the request is approved, it would bring Blueprint’s total expenses for Bragg Stadium to “just $2M shy of the $27M funding from sales-tax proceeds that went toward Florida State University’s Doak Campbell Stadium – a move that sparked controversy and public concern.” (link)
