SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey over the weekend reiterated the need to reevaluate the College Football Playoff format: “There is a need for clarity on what’s going to happen out West, but the strength of the Pac-12 – and, I mean this respectfully to Washington State and Oregon State ... that strength has migrated into other conferences. And if you look at a six-and-six format from (2024) forward, the sixth-best conference champion would be unranked some years, or in the 20s, and you’re displacing now the 11th-ranked team. That just doesn’t work, and we have to understand that. And that’s not meant to be disrespectful to anyone. That’s just meant to acknowledge new realities.” Meanwhile, AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco acknowledges there will be one fewer Power 5 league and says: “There might be calls for let’s change this to 5-7, but for the two years remaining where you need unanimity, why would we give up the 6-6, where we would have somewhat greater access? … We will fight to keep 6-6 for at least a couple of years. Beyond that, I think the key for us is to make sure there are at least five automatics.” (link)

CBS’ Dennis Dodd contends the status of Oregon State and Washington State is a “significant reason why not much can be accomplished” at today’s College Football Playoff Management Committee meeting. The committee cannot make any moves on adjusting the heretofore agreed upon 12-team playoff model of six automatic qualifiers (highest-ranked conference champions) and six at-large teams. It doesn't even know how many conferences there will be in 2024.” Going forward, Cougars AD Pat Chun wonders what the entire landscape will look like. He remarked during last week’s media call that “they lowered the market for TV rights. SMU and Stanford essentially set the floor at zero dollars [to go to the ACC]. Think about the repercussions of the decisions by those five schools relative to telling TV, 'You know, schools are OK taking less money.' They reset the money on the market, on the floor. … It's been very clear that TV looks at college football as an inefficient purpose. They're focusing on big brands right now -- what they deem to be the biggest brands. College football is either going to have to adapt to that or create a different total model." Lots more from Dodd. Indiana AD Scott Dolson discusses his role in conference expansion as chair of the Big Ten ADs and says Commissioner Tony Petitti relied on him because Petitti “can't call every AD.” Petitti would instead provide updates to Dolson, who would pass that information on to his fellow ADs and collect their feedback. Dolson: “I can give him a feel for what I think are their priorities, what are the things going on, how everyone will react to this, to try to give him that feedback as he's trying to gather that information as he works with the presidents. … When you go through crisis or crazy times, it can separate people or bring them together.” He adds: “This is a close knit group.” (link)

Freshman members of the Boston College men’s and women’s swim and dive program were allegedly forced to binge drink until they vomited and then consume their own vomit, according to new details reported by SwimSwam. BC initially said the team had been indefinitely suspended after administrators determined that hazing had occurred; however, a letter from the Office of the Dean of Students sent later last week indicated that in no way had any determination yet been made yet regarding violations of university policy. On Thursday, BC released a revised statement referring to the hazing as “credible reports.” (link)

The Sun Belt issued public reprimands of James Madison and Marshall due to violations of NCAA rules during their respective football games on Saturday. From the SBC: “The violations resulted from the in-game use of communication equipment in the team area for James Madison and a drone flying over the field when squad members were present during team introductions for Marshall. The Sun Belt Conference considers this matter concluded.” (link); That being said, it’s a pretty cool video as the Marshall drone flew over the sellout crowd at Joan C. Edwards Stadium before the Herd’s victory over Virginia Tech. (link)

More on Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders’ financial impact as the Daily Camera’s Olivia Doak notes that in addition to the $90.55M in media exposure the Buffs have received, the online team store is “pacing 892% ahead of 2022 and 153% ahead of 2021.” Meanwhile, September sales to date are up 2,544% YoY. CU has also sold 22,457 season tickets, which does not include the 11,600 student sports passes. Also, the Buff Club set a record with more than $28M in athletic department donations. Doak reports that in FY22, alumni donors contributed a total of $50.84M and in FY23, alumni donors contributed $52.785M. Royalty revenue from merchandise partners eclipsed $1.9M for FY23. (link)

From in front of the Law360 fortress: “The en banc Ninth Circuit on Monday handed a significant Title IX victory to a University of Arizona student who said she had been violently assaulted by a member of the school’s football team, reversing a lower court decision and ruling that the university had failed to protect her and violated her right to equal protection.” (link)

Tang will earn $3M in 2023-24 and receive a $100K salary increase each year, bringing his 2029-30 salary to $3.6M. Kentucky AD Mitch Barnhart talks about the importance of educating student-athletes, coaches and staff about the rules regarding sports gambling: “Clearly, if they want to (make a sports bet), they’re going to find a way. But we continue to try and put up all the barriers that we can to say, ‘We’re going to try and keep the competitions clean. We’re going to keep the integrity of the sport the way its supposed to be. And we don’t want players, or coaches, or staff members betting on the games that we play.’” Barnhart also notes UK held an informational meeting with student-athletes, coaches and others earlier this summer that included a presentation from U.S. Integrity. Minnesota-Duluth AD Forrest Karr says the elimination of volunteer ACs and the allowance of four paid coaches on hockey staffs has resulted in a few timing-related changes but nothing major. The Bulldogs elevated AC Brant Nicklin from volunteer to part-time, and Karr says the future of that position will be evaluated in the spring. “This approach provides continuity in the men's hockey staff, moves the program forward and allows us to learn how the market will adjust to NCAA bylaw changes.” North Dakota Men’s Hockey HC Brad Berry notes, however, that adding a new AC wasn’t easy to justify. “July 1 isn't a great time to say, ‘Hey, we need X amount of dollars to throw at a coach to come in here,’ but they saw the value of it. That's why our league is so strong, because I think each and every one of our league members believe it.” Meanwhile, Miami (OH) HC Chris Bergeron did some shuffling to add another coach without increasing the budget. Bergeron moved Jonathan Elliot from director of operations to assistant coach and then added Adam Phillips as assistant to the head coach. He explains: “I knew what we were walking into. Which was, ‘The answer is yes, if you can fund it.’ Or, ‘if you can explain it to me how it doesn't cost us any more.’ We did.” (link)

Baylor will open the Foster Pavilion, the Bears’ new $212.6M basketball arena, on January 2 when the men’s hoops team faces Cornell. The Baylor women will make their arena debut the following day against a Big 12 opponent. Bears AD Mack Rhoades: “The opening of this incredible facility is an energizing step for the Waco community, and we are excited to create a first-class experience for our student-athletes and those who support them. We have targeted Jan. 2 and Jan. 3 as our first games at Foster Pavilion; however, these dates are projections based on the current construction timeline. We will make and communicate any necessary adjustments to our targeted opening dates should the construction timeline change.” (link)

Loras College professor Anne Marx and Eastern Kentucky professor Joel Cormier examine how athletic departments tend to redistribute resources when cutting a men’s program for Title IX purposes and find that, based on data evaluated between 2007-14, “when a men’s sport program had been eliminated, the budget resources of the eliminated program were reallocated primarily to the budgets of men’s basketball and football rather than to the women’s athletics budget. The argument of athletic administrators that decisions to cut programs were based on the need to comply with Title IX was not supported by the data and contradicted the prevailing view that men’s sports were cut to fund women’s sports to comply with Title IX. … If it is determined a sport will be cut, we advise athletic administrators to take responsibility for the action rather than putting the blame on Title IX.” Lots more. Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez covers several topics with SBJ’s Ben Portnoy, including the league’s 2026 media rights negotiations, about which she says: “We’re looking at it as a tremendous opportunity because the market is a little bit down right now, and hopefully in two years we have a better environment to go to market. We also have two years which we’re working on a strategic plan that’s final dressed, been approved. We’re working on zhuzhing it up and rolling it out. We’re also under a brand analysis with a firm called Global Prairie really working on ‘OK, what is our brand? What is our brand positioning?’ and just bolstering our numbers and our value between now and going to market.” Nevarez also notes: “I think for us the next couple of years the goal is really about maintaining that access to the [College Football Playoff]. It was at 6-6 as far as [automatic qualifiers] vs. at-large. Perhaps it moves to 5-7 – that would be digestible. But definitely we need to have that access point into the expanded playoff.” Full Q&A. Navy AD Chet Gladchuk on the Anchors Aweigh podcast says of the state of college football: “It’s a sad state of affairs to be perfectly honest with you. [...] Chasing the dollar has been going on for a number of years. It’s not new. It started probably about 12 years ago with the breakup of the Big East, and the television intervention in realigning affiliations of the money has always been there.” Gladchuk also notes if “you take a look at Rutgers or you take a look at Maryland, you know, it's just difficult today to to watch the way the spirit of intercollegiate athletics as it is aligned with education, as it aligned with truly the welfare student athletes and the Integrity of Institutions has truly been diminished.” In the AAC, Gladchuk observes there is a “group of institutions that have a great upside. I think we have to be realistic in terms of our expectations as a conference and our involvements. Mike Aresco has done a magnificent job of trying to make certain a niche has been carved out for the American or any of the Group of 5 to realize an upside in the playoff system. But in reality, when you look at the schools that are in our league, it probably makes sense right where we are. I had conversations with the ACC probably about eight years ago…and it was just unrealistic in terms of the demands on the athletic program.” Lots more in the full podcast. (link)

USA Fencing CEO Phil Andrews tells SBJ’s Rachel Axon the impact of conference realignment could have significant ramifications for the U.S. Olympic team: “I don’t want to use hyperbole, but I feel like it needs to be treated as a massive crisis or potential crisis because it is a huge, huge area where the Olympic movement in the United States strongly benefits from the NCAA.” Stanford AD Bernard Muir adds: “If we’re not careful and if we’re only mindful of the revenue-generating programs, we could lose sight of what we have or this jewel that we have called the Olympic movement, and we want to make sure that’s just as prominent.” Axon points out that roughly 75% of the U.S. team in Tokyo in 2021 competed collegiately, as did nearly 85% of medalists in Rio in 2016. USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland finds some room for optimism, telling Axon: “The good news is we continue to hear a consistent and passionate commitment by athletic directors, university presidents, even conference commissioners around the future of Olympic and Paralympic sport on campuses.” As former Duke AD Kevin White puts it: “My strong opinion is we’ve got to find a way to keep both entities, the NCAA and Team USA, in a growth mode. We have a great story to tell. That’s the best ammunition we have.” (link)

Nevada SportsNet’s Chris Murray asks Nevada AD Stephanie Rempe whether NIL can be placed in a good or bad bucket, and Rempe replies: "I would say for college athletics it's in the bad, but for the student-athletes it's in the good, and that's why we're here and that's what it's about. I really do feel like most everybody is very supportive of the spirit of NIL, and so we think that's good for the student-athletes for sure." On the Wolf Pack’s position within the Mountain West, Rempe remarks: "I absolutely believe we're right where we need to be. There might be a couple of schools ahead of us in terms of sport by sport. We can always do more to educate our student-athletes. We can always do more to get out in the community and get businesses to participate. For sure, we need to grow in that space, but I don't feel like we're losing ground, and that is because of donors. That is because of our Nevada supporters. We have a group of about 10 people who have really allowed us to be successful and play in that space in a really, really effective way.” (link)

Attorneys for Michigan State Football HC Mel Tucker have formally responded to MSU’s written notice of its intention to terminate his contract for cause. The response reads, in part: “[Tucker] did not engage in unprofessional or unethical behavior or 'moral turpitude' by any stretch of the imagination. In fact, as discussed below, under Michigan law, assault and battery does not even constitute 'moral turpitude,' and the flimsy foundation of the university's finding – a private relationship involving mutual flirting and one instance of consensual phone sex – falls far short of the mark." ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports the full letter is 12 pages and concludes by asserting MSU lacks cause to terminate Tucker’s employment. “The above reasons are more than sufficient to refute the grounds for early termination set forth in the notice. We sincerely hope the university will take them seriously, if not because it cares about Tucker's rights, then because it cares about the limitless liability it will face over the private lives of its thousands of employees and faculty." Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports the “commissioners of the NCAA’s four HBCU conferences sent a letter last week to the Congressional Black Caucus imploring them to pass legislation addressing NIL & athlete employment, which the commissioners say would have a ‘staggering impact’ on their schools.” From the letter: “Pending regulatory decisions and plaintiffs’ attorneys threaten to change the face of college sports without our voices, and more importantly, without the voices of the student-athletes being considered. … Like the majority of our Division II and mid-major peers, most HBCUs do not generate significant revenue and rely heavily on school-appropriated funds and donations. Therefore, classifying student-athletes as employees would have a staggering impact on our athletic programs and schools.” Full letter. (link)

Florida A&M President Larry Robinson has requested an additional $15M from the state’s Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency for FAMU's Bragg Memorial Stadium. Robinson: “Specifically, we are in need of an additional $15M from Blueprint's infrastructure funds to enhance some of the health and safety aspects of this community asset.” The Tallahassee Democrat’s Tarah Jean and Gerald Thomas III note that if the request is approved, it would bring Blueprint’s total expenses for Bragg Stadium to “just $2M shy of the $27M funding from sales-tax proceeds that went toward Florida State University’s Doak Campbell Stadium – a move that sparked controversy and public concern.” (link)
