ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips tells Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger the College Football Playoff Management Committee “really needs to make a decision this fall” on the CFP’s 12-team format. “We are going to be inside of a year as it relates to the playing season of 2024. I do believe there has to be some reward for being a conference champion. That needs to be placed in whatever model we decide, whether that’s 6+6 or 5+7. Maybe it’s the same format that we’ve agreed upon or talked about before what happened to the Pac-12. Maybe it’s the top five conferences or top five ranked teams or the champions of the four conferences and best Group of Five.” Dellenger: “Applying a 5+7 format over the previous decade produces interesting results. The SEC and Big Ten dominate the field. Between them, they would have accounted for 73 of the 120 spots (61%). … However, that logic has its flaws. Those calculations were made assuming there was no Pac-12. Pac-12 teams were counted as part of their new leagues.” Meanwhile, Dellenger points out it’s unclear how voting within the committee will work. “For certain CFP decisions, the group uses a weighted voting system that grants more authority to the Power Five/Notre Dame (80%) than the Group of Five (20%) by using assigned units. How the Pac-12’s units will be distributed is in question. Does the Pac-2, if it remains together, retain the units?” More from Dellenger. (link)

Alabama AD Greg Byrne covers several topics with Sports Illustrated’s Katie Windham, including his reaction to the gambling scandal involving former Tide Baseball HC Brad Bohannon: “It was a gut punch. I think sometimes people assume that I know everything that's going on within our program, or even after there's an issue. And I'm often at the mercy of the people who are doing investigations of them telling me what I need to know. Sometimes there's things I don't need to know. Often there’s things I don’t need to know, and that’s not an ignorance approach, that’s just something when it comes to legal issues, the people who are doing investigations are doing what they need to do. And what we do is we support them when it comes to that. … I think I’m in my 17th year of being an AD. One of the things that I have learned from what I do is, I am really slow to judge. … Because I know that there's often a lot more to the story than what we can talk about because of privacy issues. Because of information that we might not be privy too. And so I'm only one person, but as I’m getting more gray hair, I’ve tried to be more thoughtful and understanding that sometimes what I immediately think isn't always right.” More from Byrne, including his thoughts on realignment developments, NIL and more. Roughly 30 Boston College swimming & diving student-athletes and their families have retained attorneys Tara Davis and Andrew Miltenberg, who released the following statement in regards to the Eagles’ decision to suspend the program: “The issuance of this statement prematurely, and without having gathered all of the relevant facts, was not only negligent but also extremely harmful and damaging to the members of the Swimming and Diving program. It is distressing that the College has been so irresponsible in its public messaging." BC tells WBZ that “the matter will be investigated by the Office of the Dean of Students and adjudicated fairly and impartially through the student conduct process. Once the investigation and adjudication process is complete, Athletics will reassess the status of the teams." (link)

Sportico’s Michael McCann unpacks some of the legal arguments made by Michigan State Football HC Mel Tucker’s attorneys, Jennifer Belveal and John Birmingham, Jr., including this regarding Tucker’s legal right to defend himself in public. “They warn that, as a public university, MSU would have ‘violated the First Amendment’ if it has punished Tucker for his public defense against Tracy’s allegations. Tucker, the letter points out, had no obligation to ‘stand by and watch as his reputation and career are maligned based on allegations.’” Belveal and Birmingham also argue that an “entirely consensual adult relationship” cannot amount to moral turpitude, nor can “striking up a friendship with someone after meeting through a one-time work event,” or “developing a deeper personal relationship with that person” or “eventually engaging in mutual flirtation and sexual activity with that person outside the workplace.” Also from McCann: “Should Tucker eventually sue MSU, the case could lead to the public disclosure of materials connected to the university’s investigations. Emails sent by MSU leaders and administrators—including about why they didn’t act sooner—could be revealed, as could text and direct messages. Those officials could also face witness depositions and be required to give sworn testimony.” More. (link)

I just felt it was the right time to do it. … People talk about succession planning being important, but this is just a textbook example of succession planning at its best. David’s ready. I'm ready. The Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus has “mostly conceded its pursuit of marquee events to an increasingly one-upping field of competitors in Sin City’s gentrifying sports and entertainment market,” according to Sportico’s Eric Jackson and Daniel Libit. The site of such events as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar breaking Wilt Chamberlain’s scoring record and the rematch between Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis, the arena’s days of hosting six major concerts a month are now over, and Rebels Senior Assoc. AD for Facilities and Events/Thomas & Mack Center Executive Director Mike Newcomb says: “We just need to hang in there and try to steal a show here and there. We take what we can get.” The Mountain West pays UNLV a $160K fixed rental fee in addition to $9 per single-game ticket sold for holding its hoops championships there. That contract expires after this season, and MWC Commissioner Gloria Nevarez says the league is considering all options moving forward, but “Las Vegas and the T&M will be at the top of the consideration list for 2025 and beyond.” More. We can’t wait to add another brick to the castle of greatness they’ve built.” (link)

Media Musings…
+ Saturday’s Colorado-Oregon (ESPN) matchup averaged 10.03M viewers, making it the largest Nielsen-measured audience of the season. The game edged out Ohio State-Notre Dame, which drew 9.98M viewers. Sports Media Watch’s Jon Lewis adds a caveat: “Keep in mind that NBC uses a separate measurement service — Adobe Analytics — to calculate its streaming audience. (For the other networks, including ESPN and ABC, streaming viewership is included in Nielsen’s figures.) Including the Adobe-measured streaming audience of 605K, the Ohio State-Notre Dame game had a larger audience of 10.59M.” Lewis also notes: “In just four weeks this season, six games have averaged at least eight million viewers — one shy of last year’s full regular season total.” Meanwhile, Florida State-Clemson was the next most-watched game with 6.71M viewers, followed by Ole Miss-Alabama (4.6M), Iowa-Penn State (2.75M), USC-Arizona State and Texas-Baylor (2.63M), Arkansas-LSU (2.44M), Auburn-Texas A&M (2.18M) and Oklahoma-Cincinnati (2.17M). Full list and more from Lewis. (link, link)
+ ESPN College GameDay averaged 2.2M viewers, up 16% over last year’s Week 4. Additionally, 3.1M tuned in for the final hour. It was the third most-watched September episode since 2010. (link)
+ According to ESPN VP of Research Flora Kelly, last Saturday was the most-watched college football Saturday ever outside of rivalry week with 10 games attracting at least 2M viewers. Overall, nearly 12B minutes were consumed across all rated networks. (link)
+ On3’s Eric Prisbell: “It’s more evidence underscoring heightened interest in this college football season. Doomsday predictions by NIL critics had no merit.” (link)
