Bethel (KS) names alum/Pratt (NJCAA) AD Tim Swartzendruber as the Threshers' new AD, starting October 16. President Jon Gering: “Tim’s professional philosophy, prior experiences, and deep Kansas connections distinguished him from other applicants. He loves Bethel and wants to lead the athletic department to its next level of success.” (link)

Valley City State AD/Football HC Dennis McCulloch on the future for the Vikings: “Basically, by the first of the year, we need to have something we can put on a schedule. So, we kind of have a couple of months.  For recruits, it matters constantly. No matter what option we go with, we need something sooner rather than later. […] Every option is on the table. We’re now having to have conversations with schools to find out what the reality is of where they are, how they are funded, and how things work for them to find the right option for us.” In discussing the possibilities with NewsDakota.com’s Ryan Cunningham, McCulloch estimates a move to the Frontier would add around $100K in travel costs to the budget. St. Thomas (FL) will grow its department to 31 varsity sports with the addition of Men’s Volleyball in 2024-25. Bobcats AD Bill Rychel: “It is a natural fit for South Florida, where there aren't many options for athletes to compete at the college level and have that experience.” Alumnus and Women’s Volleyball AC Breno Ertty will serve as the program’s inaugural HC. Waldorf removes the interim tag from Football HC Tyler Chapa. AD Chad Gassman: “Today's announcement is an outward sign of my belief that Tyler Chapa is head coach material and earned that rank at Waldorf University. He has proven that to me every day since he was given the enormous task of Interim Head Coach on June 8th. […] This decision is not the result of any one game, or of our win/loss record so far this season. Coach Chapa has shown competence and skill in every facet of running a small college football program. This comes as no surprise. Coach Chapa has been a big part of something truly incredible in the Waldorf Football program these past five years, and he is most deserving of this title and this opportunity.” (link)

Taylor names prep coach Cassie Wiseman as Women’s Basketball HC. Trojans AD Gould: “She quickly rose to the top of our candidates to not only serve as our coach this year but for the long-term. Her background and expertise in the game of basketball, coupled with her competitive drive and obvious passion for discipling young women make her a perfect fit for what we want our women's basketball program to be about.” (link)

D1.relocation COO Daniel Feig talks with D1.ticker’s Kristen Eargle about the launch of the relocation services company focused solely on the college athletics marketplace. Feig, the former USC Upstate (NCAA DI) AD, explains that those who subscribe for the service or whose destination athletic departments are partners will hear from a customer service specialist within two hours of D1.relocation receiving the information. The specialists are all connected to collegiate athletics, whether they’re a former athletic administrator or a coach’s spouse – “someone that really understands the difficulty and challenge of this process.” Services range from big-picture assistance like highlighting short-term housing options and identifying trusted real estate agents to time-saving tasks like finding utility providers and offering pertinent information about the community. “You can just kind of picture a hotel concierge service. That’s what we’re providing along the way. … It’s really from A to Z trying to make this process as turnkey as possible.” Lots more from Feig. (link)

Avila has filed a petition with the Jackson County Circuit Court to remove restrictions to endowment funds allowing the institution to access $6.4M in principal gifts “to meet its financial obligations.” President Jim Burkee: “Were we only pulling from or accessing endowment funds to cover our needs because we couldn’t meet them with enrollment revenue, yeah, there might be a risk. […] I would distinguish Avila in a very forceful way from other institutions, because this is not a matter of Avila accessing funds or making significant cuts because we’re an institution in some kind of crisis.” Burkee hopes for a resolution within weeks as the university is “facing critical funding issues,” and has filed for an expedited hearing ahead of its scheduled date in January. Social n Sport’s Jessica Smith offers some advice on how sports organizations should measure social media goals. Smith explains that setting YoY goals for engagements, impressions, followers and other metrics are good to keep track of but “living and breathing by these metrics and thinking they are a key indicator of good work is a miss.” For one, there are too many uncontrollable variables associated with sports, especially winning & losing. Smith advises that any “goal-setting initiative should start with the overall organizational goals. What is the business trying to achieve, and how can social and content support those?” For instance, if increasing revenue is the goal, then an objective might be: “Create a digital playbook for the sponsorship team by Q1 that features sellable assets to assist sales efforts.” Smith closes: “Don’t get caught up in the rat race of trying to reach x number of total impressions in a season. Anyone can play that game, but the strongest social teams play the game of achieving goals and objectives that actually map back to the business.” (link)
