College Football Playoff Executive Director Bill Hancock on the CFP Management Committee’s discussions regarding the playoff’s format: “It just wasn’t the focus of the meeting.” Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick adds: “I know it’s of public interest. But there’s nobody in the room saying, ‘Hey, you’ve got to have this discussion right now.’” As for what the meeting was about, The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach reports representatives from five media companies made presentations, “laying the foundation for the CFP’s future beyond 2026,” and Swarbrick notes: “This was all about hearing from potential media partners. The entire time was spent listening to presentations from them and learning about how they approach the CFP in the future. … (The presentations) were all about, ‘Here’s how we’d approach the CFP. Here’s why we’d be a good partner.’” Swarbrick notes that no numbers were presented but does say: “Streaming adds another element. We are not averse to streaming some of the games. I wouldn’t expect us to stream all of them, but right now nothing is off the table.” (link, link); More from Swarbrick on how a 12-team College Football Playoff would be nice for team in Notre Dame’s current situation: “Obviously, I was one of the four (who developed the format) and I've been a strong advocate, not just because I think it's good for Notre Dame, I think it's great for CFB. There are a lot of examples of games like (Ohio State-Notre Dame), that now a team that comes out on the wrong side of them can feel differently. I think it's great for college football.” (link)

With College Football Playoff Executive Director Bill Hancock set to depart in 2025, CBS’ Dennis Dodd notes his replacement is expected to be in place by Christmas, if not earlier, and Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick believes the new executive director must be “somebody who can help develop the property into what it's going to be and position it effectively in the sports marketplace as one of the premier events. … I think it's more about building the brand, creating excitement around it. What are the auxiliary events? Think how the Super Bowl grew over time. What is the growth path here? How does that work?" AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco contends the new executive director needs to be a strategic thinker. “You can't just get a bowl director. This is not an operations position. It could morph into something far more important once we get the [NCAA] governance thing worked out. It could be the seat of governance for college football. I think that's going to happen eventually." Dodd, meanwhile, suggests several potential candidates, including Cotton Bowl Executive Director Rick Baker, Activision Blizzard Chairman Steve Bornstein, Alabama AD Greg Byrne, North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham, Colorado AD Rick George, Oregon AD Rob Mullens, former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Fox Sports President/COO Mark Silverman, Ohio State AD Gene Smith, MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher, Florida AD Scott Stricklin, Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick and Syracuse AD John Wildhack. Washington President Ana Mari Cauce disputes reports that the Pac-12’s media rights negotiations with ESPN collapsed because the league sought a deal for $50M per school per year. Cauce says the $50M figure was discussed as a target for the total revenue distributions to the campuses, including those from the College Football Playoff, NCAA Tournament and media rights. Cauce tells The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner: “In some models, it was possible for some schools to get $50M. But at no time did anyone think we could all get $50M in media rights. That would have been stupid. … The estimates from [Pac-12 Commissioner] George [Kliavkoff] were in the $30 millions to low $40 millions. Potentially, some (schools) could make $50M with the (playoff) and media rights.” Asked if Kliavkoff took a $50M counteroffer to ESPN, which had offered $30M, Cauce tells Wilner: “I cannot tell you for sure that (Kliavkoff) asked for $50M per school, but I would be very surprised if that was a serious counteroffer. I have notes, and $50M is never something we were told. I don’t believe that ever happened.” Meanwhile, Wilner reports that “several sources took issue with Cauce’s interpretation of the negotiations” and maintain the presidents did support asking for $50M. Also: “One president served as the prime driver of the $50M asking price using an analysis performed by an on-campus advisor.” Cauce goes on note of the 13-month process: “I’m not sure I fully understood how destabilizing it would be.” (link)

Michigan State has officially parted ways with Football HC Mel Tucker for cause. In a response to Monday’s letter from Tucker via his attorneys, Spartans AD Alan Haller writes: “Your unconvincing rationalizations and misguided attempt to shift responsibility cannot and do not excuse your own behavior. Had you not engaged in this inappropriate and unprofessional conduct, the University would not be subject to public disrespect and ridicule regarding your actions. … It is decidedly unprofessional and unethical to flirt, make sexual comments, and masturbate while on the phone with a University vendor. The unprofessional and unethical behavior is particularly egregious given that the Vendor at issue was contracted by the University for the sole purpose of educating student-athletes on, and preventing instances of, inappropriate sexual misconduct.” (link); The Lansing State Journal’s Matt Mencarini and USA Today’s Kenny Jacoby point out that when MSU and Tucker agreed to a contract extension, the language was changed from stating the threshold for termination was up to the university’s “sole judgment” to its “reasonable” judgment. Oregon law professor Liz Tippett posits that the language means Tucker’s behavior doesn’t have to bring actual ridicule on the university, only that it does so in MSU’s “reasonable judgment.” Meanwhile, West Florida law professor Gil Fried says Haller’s letter from last week stating MSU’s intention to part ways with Tucker was a “preemptive strike,” adding: “You can quickly muddy up the water if you have a good strategy and good attorney.” Fried goes on to note that a settlement in the range of $10-15M is possible. More on the potential legal implications. (link)

La Salle announces a renovation of TruMark Financial Center which will include a 360-degree bowl design that will change the court orientation, from east to west instead of north to south, and add more premium seating. Explorers AD Ashwin Puri: “This transformation will create a loud, intimate, and intense atmosphere for our fans. That atmosphere will give current and future student-athletes an unparalleled collegiate experience." (link)

Cincinnati has eclipsed the $100M threshold for its Day One Ready campaign, which launched in November 2021 preparation for UC’s move to the Big 12. The total includes 17 gifts of $1M or more. Bearcats AD John Cunningham: “We set an ambitious goal to compete for championships on the first day we entered the Big 12, and we can't thank our Bearcats community enough for what has been an outpouring of support. We've seen advances already—in facilities, support for our student-athletes and critical investment needed to be championship ready.” (link)

ESPN’s Dan Murphy talks with Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale about AO’s long-term plans, and Cavale explains: “The vision starts with getting athletes into AO. … Ultimately we want to get to the collective bargaining stage. We do have to build a business that is successful. That's how we create jobs for people working on this effort. That's how we provide free membership for our athletes, and it's how we can generate the fairest group licensing deals for our athletes." North Carolina men’s hoops student-athlete Armando Bacot is one of a group of student-athletes who have signed NIL deals to serve as AO ambassadors and says: "It's a seat at the table. That's the main thing. To come together in a more organized way is what's huge about AO." While most administrators are not ready to concede that negotiating with players is inevitable, Maryland AD Damon Evans remarks: “Sometimes you have to take a look at yourself in the mirror and figure out where you are before you can know where you're going. It's time for us to stop being a reactive organization and be a proactive organization. It's OK to change. While some of us may resist that change, I'm going to embrace that change. If some of that benefits our student-athletes, that's not a bad thing." Pittsburgh AD Heather Lyke, meanwhile, says: “I don't see how athletes could collectively bargain and with whom. I just don't see the structure." Lots more from Murphy. (link)

Alabama has launched the Always Alabama licensing program for former student-athletes, coaches and other individuals. Former Crimson Tide legends who opt in to the program will have the ability to profit from the use of their NIL on merchandise alongside the Alabama brand for their entire lifetime. This campaign will be available to previous members of all 21 varsity athletic programs. Because Alabama Always is being managed exclusively by the university, 100% of each individual's generated royalty amount will go directly back to that former student-athlete. Crimson Tide AD Greg Byrne: “We are excited to offer the opportunity for all of our former players across all sports to cobrand their NIL with the Alabama brand for the rest of their lives, while also creating a way for our fans to support them long after they leave campus. So many exceptional student-athletes have become legends over the 130-plus year history of our athletics program, and they will forever be members of the Crimson Tide family." (link)

Cincinnati announces an investigation into its baseball program found two Level III violations involving a former AC and former student-athlete. The findings were submitted to and accepted by the NCAA, and the student-athlete left the team before the 2023 season. “Both minor violations were related to sports wagering but were not related to college baseball. The investigation did not find any evidence that any current or former student-athletes, coaches or staff members wagered on Cincinnati baseball or college baseball.” (link)
