James Madison AD Jeff Bourne reflects on his tenure leading the Dukes’ athletic program and says he wanted to make sure he saw JMU through its transition to the Sun Belt: “I just felt like overall, the simplest and most efficient way for the transition to happen would be to stay where I am. And that was a couple of years ago when I talked to President [Jonathan] Alger about it and said, ‘Look, I want to stay on through that and when we get on the other side of it, provided everything's in a great space, I'm going to leave.'” Alger says JMU’s first step in finding Bourne’s successor will be to hire an external search firm and notes Bourne will be an advisor throughout the process. “I really want to make sure every step of the way that Jeff is a consultant and is helping us out because his reputation is frankly going to help draw a lot of people here. … We'll have a fully open and inclusive national search. So we are open to all sorts of candidates from all sorts of backgrounds.” (link)

The Grand Sierra Resort announced plans to build a $1B entertainment district that would include a state-of-the-art home arena for the Nevada men's basketball team. The 300K-sq-ft arena capacity will exceed 10K seats and feature suites and premium hospitality clubs. According to Nevada SportsNet’s Chris Murray, the “private-capital investment would not include any public money and is the largest in the city’s history for a single project.” Wolf Pack AD Stephanie Rempe: “We are beyond thrilled for this proposed plan which will help continue to elevate our basketball programs. From providing a state-of-the-art home for Nevada Men's Basketball, to hosting top-level women's multi-team events involving Nevada Women's Basketball, this partnership will further solidify Nevada Athletics as a cornerstone of the Northern Nevada community." The new arena is slated to open in the fall of 2026. (link, link); Some initial renderings of the district. (link)

The hearing for Washington State and Oregon State’s legal action against the Pac-12 is scheduled for November 13 or 14 in Whitman County Superior Court, per The Oregonian’s Nick Daschel, who adds: “That's roughly 7 weeks for the parties to settle. Otherwise, it's game on in front of Judge Gary J. Libey.” (link)

Syracuse Chancellor Kent Syverud yesterday discussed the Orange’s future in athletics, telling the University Senate: “In the long term, I think we should expect more change. A lot happened over the summer. I did consult with academic leaders in the course of deciding how to vote and how to proceed on Stanford and Berkeley and SMU. In the short run, it protects our conference and does so with schools that are strong academic schools. It protects the ACC from the experience of the Pac-12. But, given the continuing change coming at intercollegiate athletics, we as a university need to be prepared for whatever comes. We need to be strongly positioned to be prominent in sports, including academically. But we also need to be prepared to realize that the current situation is not a stable one, for a whole bunch of reasons. I just want to reassure you that a lot of us are working to make sure Syracuse has a strategy.” (link)

Boise State AD Jeramiah Dickey discussed several topics during BoiseDev’s Intersection event, including how he ensures competition produces positive results. “We’re a very competitive industry, and no one cares what you did yesterday. And so we are constantly driving and pushing. But, people are our greatest asset. If I’m not connected to my team, and I don’t know where they’re at mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually, whatever it may be on any given day, that can give to me and our collective team a disservice.” Dickey also says he’s learned that he can’t have a bad day in public. “I have to stand in the gap. I have to face every bullet that comes. We live by this motto of protect and promote. My job is to protect our team and promote them. That doesn’t leave much bandwidth for the days that I’m struggling as a husband, as a father of three kids, there’s dad guilt, there are expectations that maybe you’re not meeting or it’s unrealistic to meet but my goal is for no one to tell. Now, I’m not saying I keep it inside. I think it’s important to have relationships in your life that you can share the vulnerable and your authentic self and to be able to say I’m having a really tough day but I also think you have to walk a very fine line with that with your team.” More from Dickey. SBJ released its 13th annual class of Game Changers: Women in Sports Business. This year’s cohort includes former Nevada AD/Pictor Group Founder/CEO Cary Groth and Paciolan President Deana Barnes from the world of college athletics. (link); SBJ’s Michael Smith on Groth: “Her most recent visionary accomplishment took her back to Nevada, where she has worked with the university to create an undergraduate minor in sports management and offer a nine-month certificate program in leadership. The motivation behind her move back to campus at Nevada largely had to do with Groth’s desire to groom the next generation of sports business leaders.” Groth: “That’s something that just started because we need some good up-and-comers who learn the business the right way.” (link); SBJ’s Joe Lemire on Barnes: “Barnes…has helped roughly 150 clients embrace a mobile-first strategy with fans and implement a system of SMS notifications to update fans during games and events. She said she’s learned ‘to lead with authenticity’ and is part of Learfield’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council. Currently, 71% of Paciolan’s employees are female and/or minorities.” Barnes: “We have very much been intentional about that and have grown a great space there.” She also says the council has worked to “shift the narrative within Learfield itself. So those little things are showing me that there is progress being made.” (link)

Adidas has filed a notice of opposition with the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in which it accuses LIV Golf of violating trademark law. The company argues LIV is attempting to register a striped logo that is “confusingly similar” to Adidas’ in “appearance and overall commercial impression.” Adidas also claims registration would lead consumers to wrongly assume Adidas is connected to LIV. Sportico’s Michael McCann notes that a USPTO trademark examining attorney earlier this year “found no conflicting marks that would bar registration.” McCann adds: “Adidas stresses it has long used its three stripes and that consumers are familiar with them. The company emphasizes its ‘frequent sponsorship’ of tournament, college sports and pro athletes, with the Boston Marathon, the University of Louisville and Lionel Messi all mentioned as examples. Adidas wants to establish that it has invested considerably in promoting a logo.” (link)

College Football Playoff Executive Director Bill Hancock on the CFP Management Committee’s discussions regarding the playoff’s format: “It just wasn’t the focus of the meeting.” Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick adds: “I know it’s of public interest. But there’s nobody in the room saying, ‘Hey, you’ve got to have this discussion right now.’” As for what the meeting was about, The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach reports representatives from five media companies made presentations, “laying the foundation for the CFP’s future beyond 2026,” and Swarbrick notes: “This was all about hearing from potential media partners. The entire time was spent listening to presentations from them and learning about how they approach the CFP in the future. … (The presentations) were all about, ‘Here’s how we’d approach the CFP. Here’s why we’d be a good partner.’” Swarbrick notes that no numbers were presented but does say: “Streaming adds another element. We are not averse to streaming some of the games. I wouldn’t expect us to stream all of them, but right now nothing is off the table.” (link, link); More from Swarbrick on how a 12-team College Football Playoff would be nice for team in Notre Dame’s current situation: “Obviously, I was one of the four (who developed the format) and I've been a strong advocate, not just because I think it's good for Notre Dame, I think it's great for CFB. There are a lot of examples of games like (Ohio State-Notre Dame), that now a team that comes out on the wrong side of them can feel differently. I think it's great for college football.” (link)

With College Football Playoff Executive Director Bill Hancock set to depart in 2025, CBS’ Dennis Dodd notes his replacement is expected to be in place by Christmas, if not earlier, and Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick believes the new executive director must be “somebody who can help develop the property into what it's going to be and position it effectively in the sports marketplace as one of the premier events. … I think it's more about building the brand, creating excitement around it. What are the auxiliary events? Think how the Super Bowl grew over time. What is the growth path here? How does that work?" AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco contends the new executive director needs to be a strategic thinker. “You can't just get a bowl director. This is not an operations position. It could morph into something far more important once we get the [NCAA] governance thing worked out. It could be the seat of governance for college football. I think that's going to happen eventually." Dodd, meanwhile, suggests several potential candidates, including Cotton Bowl Executive Director Rick Baker, Activision Blizzard Chairman Steve Bornstein, Alabama AD Greg Byrne, North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham, Colorado AD Rick George, Oregon AD Rob Mullens, former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Fox Sports President/COO Mark Silverman, Ohio State AD Gene Smith, MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher, Florida AD Scott Stricklin, Notre Dame AD Jack Swarbrick and Syracuse AD John Wildhack. Washington President Ana Mari Cauce disputes reports that the Pac-12’s media rights negotiations with ESPN collapsed because the league sought a deal for $50M per school per year. Cauce says the $50M figure was discussed as a target for the total revenue distributions to the campuses, including those from the College Football Playoff, NCAA Tournament and media rights. Cauce tells The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner: “In some models, it was possible for some schools to get $50M. But at no time did anyone think we could all get $50M in media rights. That would have been stupid. … The estimates from [Pac-12 Commissioner] George [Kliavkoff] were in the $30 millions to low $40 millions. Potentially, some (schools) could make $50M with the (playoff) and media rights.” Asked if Kliavkoff took a $50M counteroffer to ESPN, which had offered $30M, Cauce tells Wilner: “I cannot tell you for sure that (Kliavkoff) asked for $50M per school, but I would be very surprised if that was a serious counteroffer. I have notes, and $50M is never something we were told. I don’t believe that ever happened.” Meanwhile, Wilner reports that “several sources took issue with Cauce’s interpretation of the negotiations” and maintain the presidents did support asking for $50M. Also: “One president served as the prime driver of the $50M asking price using an analysis performed by an on-campus advisor.” Cauce goes on note of the 13-month process: “I’m not sure I fully understood how destabilizing it would be.” (link)

Michigan State has officially parted ways with Football HC Mel Tucker for cause. In a response to Monday’s letter from Tucker via his attorneys, Spartans AD Alan Haller writes: “Your unconvincing rationalizations and misguided attempt to shift responsibility cannot and do not excuse your own behavior. Had you not engaged in this inappropriate and unprofessional conduct, the University would not be subject to public disrespect and ridicule regarding your actions. … It is decidedly unprofessional and unethical to flirt, make sexual comments, and masturbate while on the phone with a University vendor. The unprofessional and unethical behavior is particularly egregious given that the Vendor at issue was contracted by the University for the sole purpose of educating student-athletes on, and preventing instances of, inappropriate sexual misconduct.” (link); The Lansing State Journal’s Matt Mencarini and USA Today’s Kenny Jacoby point out that when MSU and Tucker agreed to a contract extension, the language was changed from stating the threshold for termination was up to the university’s “sole judgment” to its “reasonable” judgment. Oregon law professor Liz Tippett posits that the language means Tucker’s behavior doesn’t have to bring actual ridicule on the university, only that it does so in MSU’s “reasonable judgment.” Meanwhile, West Florida law professor Gil Fried says Haller’s letter from last week stating MSU’s intention to part ways with Tucker was a “preemptive strike,” adding: “You can quickly muddy up the water if you have a good strategy and good attorney.” Fried goes on to note that a settlement in the range of $10-15M is possible. More on the potential legal implications. (link)

Cincinnati has eclipsed the $100M threshold for its Day One Ready campaign, which launched in November 2021 preparation for UC’s move to the Big 12. The total includes 17 gifts of $1M or more. Bearcats AD John Cunningham: “We set an ambitious goal to compete for championships on the first day we entered the Big 12, and we can't thank our Bearcats community enough for what has been an outpouring of support. We've seen advances already—in facilities, support for our student-athletes and critical investment needed to be championship ready.” (link)

ESPN’s Dan Murphy talks with Athletes.org Co-Founder Jim Cavale about AO’s long-term plans, and Cavale explains: “The vision starts with getting athletes into AO. … Ultimately we want to get to the collective bargaining stage. We do have to build a business that is successful. That's how we create jobs for people working on this effort. That's how we provide free membership for our athletes, and it's how we can generate the fairest group licensing deals for our athletes." North Carolina men’s hoops student-athlete Armando Bacot is one of a group of student-athletes who have signed NIL deals to serve as AO ambassadors and says: "It's a seat at the table. That's the main thing. To come together in a more organized way is what's huge about AO." While most administrators are not ready to concede that negotiating with players is inevitable, Maryland AD Damon Evans remarks: “Sometimes you have to take a look at yourself in the mirror and figure out where you are before you can know where you're going. It's time for us to stop being a reactive organization and be a proactive organization. It's OK to change. While some of us may resist that change, I'm going to embrace that change. If some of that benefits our student-athletes, that's not a bad thing." Pittsburgh AD Heather Lyke, meanwhile, says: “I don't see how athletes could collectively bargain and with whom. I just don't see the structure." Lots more from Murphy. (link)

Alabama has launched the Always Alabama licensing program for former student-athletes, coaches and other individuals. Former Crimson Tide legends who opt in to the program will have the ability to profit from the use of their NIL on merchandise alongside the Alabama brand for their entire lifetime. This campaign will be available to previous members of all 21 varsity athletic programs. Because Alabama Always is being managed exclusively by the university, 100% of each individual's generated royalty amount will go directly back to that former student-athlete. Crimson Tide AD Greg Byrne: “We are excited to offer the opportunity for all of our former players across all sports to cobrand their NIL with the Alabama brand for the rest of their lives, while also creating a way for our fans to support them long after they leave campus. So many exceptional student-athletes have become legends over the 130-plus year history of our athletics program, and they will forever be members of the Crimson Tide family." (link)

Cincinnati announces an investigation into its baseball program found two Level III violations involving a former AC and former student-athlete. The findings were submitted to and accepted by the NCAA, and the student-athlete left the team before the 2023 season. “Both minor violations were related to sports wagering but were not related to college baseball. The investigation did not find any evidence that any current or former student-athletes, coaches or staff members wagered on Cincinnati baseball or college baseball.” (link)
