Washington President Ana Marie Cauce wrote a letter to JohnCanzano.com’s namesake to further clarify her comments surrounding media rights negotiations for the Pac-12. Cauce: “You are 100% percent correct that all of us presidents, and especially those like myself who had been serving on the executive board, bear responsibility for any and all decisions that results in the devaluation of our conference that led to eight teams leaving. In my news conference just days after our decisions, I very clearly took full responsibility for choosing to move on to the Big Ten, starting August 2, 2024, even at a partial share. I did not believe - and I do not believe now - that signing onto a deal that would have guaranteed less revenue than what we have now and included no guarantee of appearances on linear TV would have allowed us to remain competitive at the high level of performance we are enjoying this year. I also do not believe it would have kept the Pac-12 together as a viable Power 5 conference for much longer, as indicated by the exit clause.” More. (link)

UCF AD Terry Mohajir provides feedback on his meetings last week with House Small Business Committee in Washington D.C.: “I don’t think everybody understands what we do and how our athletes are treated. It’s not the ones I talked to in Florida, but outside the state, how far removed they are from understanding the enterprise and what we do daily.” Mohajir also comments on how he’s building football schedules with the new Big 12 membership: “It’s getting easier because I’m scheduling them further out, so there are more opportunities. Our philosophy has changed. In the American, we had a different philosophy. Now, we’ve had to pivot 180 degrees. Right now, we have to play a Power 5 non-conference opponent. We played Boise State this year and [the game] was counted as a Power Five [opponent]. The Big 12 voted to give us a waiver to count it, but going forward, we have to have Power 5 opponents in nonconference, which is required. That could change, but we’re still evaluating.” (link)

Boncom Brand Director Jake Welch examines New York-based Translation’s branding and marketing work with the Big 12 as the league re-identifies itself. A rep from Translation tells Welch: “It can’t be overlooked that student-athletes are the heartbeat of all these institutions. 17-22 year old kids that live and breathe ‘the culture’ and are the ambassadors of it on all their respective campuses, in Provo, Manhattan, Waco, and beyond. Our work aimed to, and will continue to, not only star real student-athletes but also pull in creative elements that we know resonate with them – from the right music and voiceover choices, to partnering with creators behind the camera that make relevant, massively appealing work.” Welch observes that finding a unifying strategy for a group of schools that spans three time zones is challenging, but Translation says: “Competition and passion transcends any geographic boundary. Our goal was always to land on a strategy that would help institutions rally around the Big 12’s vision of pioneering and this new era of collegiate athletics. … With the Big 12’s new wave of brand growth underway, (we’re) here to be a co-author and showcase how the Big 12 is just getting started and there is much more to come from the conference.” More. The D1.dossier for Ohio State is complete & ready to assist those of you with an interest in the opening in Columbus. Next up: James Madison. Maine AD Jude Killy: “It really helped me consolidate some research. I don’t know how many hours, or days, of research it saved me from finding information to the right links, but it was hours at a minimum and probably a day or two in total.” (link)

Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg after the Pokes’ 2-2 football start, which includes a home loss to South Alabama: “I know there is a high expectation and that is good. That is exactly what we want. You know the last couple of games didn’t meet the expectation and that is what creates the angst and the displeasure, whatever you want to call it. I know I’ve been taking a lot of advice, a fair amount. Again, all of that is good because what that says is that we have a passionate fan base that cares and that is a credit to the job Coach Gundy has done for the last 19-years at Oklahoma State. He has raised the bar and the level of expectations. There is nobody that wants to win more than he does, more than the coaches in the West End Zone, and more than the players in the West End Zone. I know they are working very hard in this off week and will continue to work hard for K-State and the games we play after that. Everybody is well aware of what the expectations are and working hard to meet those expectations.” (link)

Illinois State held the official ribbon cutting ceremony for its Indoor Practice Facility yesterday. Interim AD Jeri Beggs: “I know this is a time that so many of us have been eagerly awaiting. The student-athletes, especially, cannot wait to use this facility. The Indoor Practice Facility will have a tremendous, positive impact on our student-athletes across multiple sports.” Located on the former site of ISU football’s grass practice field, the IPF is a heated, opaque dual-membrane fabric air dome with insulation pockets for planned year-round use and a 100-yard practice field and run off areas with artificial turf. UNC Wilmington is the latest athletic department to partner with Collegiate Sports Connect & its Connect Talent portal to assist with the identification & hiring of administrative talent. Seahawks Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations Mark Wagner: “UNCW is a wonderful place full of great people, but we can’t be complacent, we have to keep improving the staff to support our student-athletes. Every hire is critical and needs to be treated as such. Collegiate Sports Connect gives us an advantage to identify and recruit the right people in this highly competitive market.” (link)

Oklahoma has increased its original capacity projection of 3,000 fans to 4,200 fans for the new Love’s Field softball stadium. This includes 3,543 fixed seats and an additional 657 in standing room. Sooners AD Joe Castiglione: “Since the start, we've approached the design of Love's Field with our fans in mind. Because we know the demand for OU Softball is sky high, we took great care to increase the capacity wherever we could while maintaining the overall fan experience.” (link)

When Chris Ducar took over as the North Carolina Women’s Soccer GM in 2021, he said Tar Heels HC Anson Dorrance asked two things of him: "build this brand and let me keep coaching until I die.” Ducar served as the goalkeeper coach for 26 years under Dorrance but now focuses on improving gameday ticket sales, overseeing recruiting, fundraising and coordinating activities with the school. In 2021 average home attendance was 2,350, but this year it is 3,408. Ducar, who reaches out to youth soccer teams and targets the student body, “What I need to let these people to know is ‘Hey, this is not the World Cup, this is the pre-World Cup.’ These are the players you are going to be watching on TV for the next four, eight, twelve years." The soccer program also paired up with a Sports Entrepreneurship class on campus this semester and students in the class were tasked with identifying the “pain points” for the program, which will be presented in the coming weeks. NIL Today…
+ Alabama Football HC Nick Saban says his program has not been approached by prospective student-athletes to pay for official visits via NIL deals, a current issue mentioned by outgoing Ohio State AD Gene Smith in Washington, D.C. last week. Saban adds: “But look, name, image and likeness is not really name, image and likeness. I think we all understand what it's become, and what we allowed it to become and I said long ago, and got very criticized for is this what we want college football to become? So it's becoming what it's becoming and that's ok. I mean, we'll just adapt and do what we have to do to compete, whatever the circumstances are. Do I think that it would be judicious to have some guard rails on some things? I think you can figure that one out just as well as anybody else.” (link)
+ The Providence-focused Friar Family Collective will distribute $1M to Men’s Basketball student-athletes this season. Business model for the collective: “80% of the revenue raised goes to athletes, 15% is for the Collective’s operating expenses, and 5% goes to consulting entities that assist with endorsement deals, compensation to athletes, compliance, and taxes.” (link)

SBJ’s Michael Smith reports the NCAA has again engaged Endeavor for media rights consultation. Here’s what you need to know: “This round of media rights includes all of the NCAA championships except for men’s basketball and men’s and women’s golf. ESPN has been in possession of those multitude of rights dating back to 2011 when this current 12-year deal was signed. It runs through August 2024, and a new media rights contract would begin with the fall championships. Talks with the incumbent, ESPN, are expected to run through the end of the year. [...] The decision on whether to bundle or unbundle all of the championship rights, such as women’s basketball, will be determined by bids from the media companies. Rather than determine that in advance, the bids from the networks will determine it.” (link)

NC State AD Boo Corrigan refutes the notion that the school flipped its vote to allow for ACC expansion, saying instead the final expansion proposal presented to the Wolfpack was far different than the first one, which the school did not support. Corrigan: “The troubling thing to me was the idea that there was any flipping. To me, a flipping of a vote means here's what it is, you take a lot of pressure and there's a lot of pressure to change your mind.... It was one thing and then it became something completely different. When it became something completely different, the chancellor and I had spent a lot of time talking about it, we voted for expansion.” Corrigan explained this yesterday at the NC State Council on Athletics meeting, its first since the September 1 expansion vote. Extra Points publisher Matt Brown suggests taking a look at a promotion/relegation system outside of football and media rights money, noting that the latter makes such a system in football all but intractable. Instead, Brown examines how Big West, Mountain West and West Coast Conference baseball programs might implement such a system. He notes the average RPI for a Big West program over the last three baseball seasons is roughly 136. For the Mountain West, it’s 140, and for the WCC, it’s 152. If the bottom two Big West schools (ex: Cal State Bakersfield and UC Riverside) moved to the WCC, and the top two WCC programs moved to the Big West, the “new Big West average RPI would be 103. The new WCC would be 189. The average Big West RPI if the league partnered with the MWC instead of the WCC (ex: adding San Jose State and Air Force) would be 108. A shift in 20+ points in average RPI may very well be enough to move from being a one-bid league to a two-bid league, or for the league champion to earn a three-seed (or better) instead of a four-seed in regional play. Softball tells a similar story.” The biggest hurdle to instituting such a system, according to Brown, is ego, as one senior administrator says no program wants to be viewed as being in the “Number 2” league. Difficulty scaling is another issue. Still, Brown asks, it’s “worth at least taking a meeting over, right?” (link)

An update from the Albuquerque Journal’s Ryan Boetel: “... The New Mexico Supreme Court on Wednesday issued an order that lets stand previous decisions that said certain records held by the UNM Foundation and the Lobo Club — nonprofit organizations that raise money for the University of New Mexico and its athletics department — are not exempt from state Inspection of Public Records Act requests.” (link)

Another eyebrow-raiser out of Michigan State as the Spartan Dawgs 4 Life NIL collective has reportedly voided contracts with upwards of 35 football student-athletes. Here’s the rationale, in part, via a statement, “SD4L has made the strategic decision to reduce our advertising budget with select student-athletes in an effort to build a sustainable NIL model for our programs.” However, per On3’s Pete Nakos, “The source indicated to On3 that a driving reason behind the decision to cancel the contracts is a shortage of funds.” (link)

The state of Georgia, via the Georgia High School Association, is poised to allow its student-athletes to profit from their NIL. Key limitations: “If approved, NIL deals cannot be linked to a specific achievement or performance, and athletes won’t be allowed to use their schools’ name, logos or uniforms or other intellectual property. Schools or school representatives may not use NIL deals to entice an athlete to enroll. These changes mirror many of the other alterations that have been made by other high school associations across the country.” (link)

Colorado AD Rick George in a letter to the student body about conduct expectations during football games writes: “We expect all our fans to refrain from vulgar language, verbal or physical abuse, underage drinking, and overall intoxication. This type of conduct will not be tolerated at our home sporting events, and I have instructed our gameday staff and members of law enforcement to enhance their monitoring efforts of our fans’ conduct.” George also asked fans not to rush the field after games, noting that “although ‘rushing the field’ has long been a college football tradition, in recent years, many schools and conferences are cracking down on the practice, as it greatly jeopardizes the safety of players, coaches, staff and other fans. … Unfortunately, after both of our first two home games, we received an inordinate number of complaints regarding fan conduct (especially student conduct), and after both of our home game victories, students and fans ‘rushed the field.’ Such conduct is unacceptable, and I ask you to please refrain from such behavior for any future events.” (link)

Kansas AD Travis Goff in a letter to the fan base encouraged those who are “on the fringe” of going all in on the football team to do so. “There are many great reasons to stay on the sideline but that mentality will not help us reach uncharted heights. We need you. And we need you now to be part of the story that is being written right here at KU. We have sold out four of our past eight home games, and David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium has become a very difficult place for our opponents to win. In just a matter of days, we will welcome new member UCF to Lawrence, followed by Oklahoma, Texas Tech and the home finale against Kansas State. We have tickets available, and frankly, we shouldn’t. We should expect advance sellouts. … Looking forward, we will continue to have a choice — will we settle or will we propel our university and program forward? Will each and every one of us do our part to seize the generational opportunity that’s in front of us?” (link)

The NFL has adjusted its gambling policies: Betting on one’s own team will be an automatic two-year suspension. More: “As part of the new rules, the suspension for betting on team facilities or on road trips will be reduced from a mandatory four-game suspension to a two-game suspension. A second violation of that kind will result in a six-game suspension. Meanwhile, a third violation means at least a one year suspension. NFL players are permitted to wager on any other sport besides football — only when they're away from team facilities, however.” (link)
