ESPN’s Schlabach reports Virginia RB Hollins, through his mom, has recounted some of the events from the tragic shooting over the weekend. Hollins says the shooter shouted at the driver to stop the bus, prompting him and two others to run out of the bus. Upon realizing no one was following him, Hollins told the two students to keep running, but he went back to the bus to help others, according to his mother, Brenda Hollins, who says: “His classmates are grateful for him because they said he saved their lives. He was the first off the bus and told two of his classmates to run, and he went back.” Upon returning, the shooter pointed a handgun at him and shot him in the back when Hollins turned to flee. Lots more. (link); Touching tribute as a slew of former Cavaliers FB ACs will wear UVa gear on the sidelines through their weekend of games. (link)

Metro News’ Kercheval continues to point to Oregon AD Mullens & Virginia Tech AD Babcock as leaders who have connections to West Virginia as the Mountaineers are looking for a new AD. Compensation wise, Kercheval believes former AD Lyons’ pay package was already plenty competitive within the marketplace, wonders if President Gee can go even higher to attract Mullens or Babcock. (link); The D1.dossier for Ball State is now available. Recently-hired Gardner-Webb AD Goodrich on his use of the service: “On the front end of the process, the information provided by D1.dossier saved me at least 12 hours of research time. I was able to use those hours to not only prepare my interview responses, but also to continue to do my current job at a high level. Undoubtedly, it helped me land my first AD opportunity, and furthermore, on the back end of the process, the D1.dossier information has helped me to be very effective the first thirty days in the chair.” Next up for D1.dossiers is Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The New York Times’ Witz provides some behind-the-scenes fodder in connection to yesterday’s UC Regents meeting & the UCLA-Big Ten situation: “Behind the scenes, though, there has been maneuvering. [...] …last month, the Pac-12 provided to several regents a glimpse of what its deal, which it has been negotiating for months, might look like if U.C.L.A. decided to remain: a range between $42 million and $47 million per school, with U.C.L.A. getting a little more than the remaining 10 schools in the Pac-12 once Southern California leaves for the Big Ten in 2024, according to two people familiar with the discussions who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss them. [...] Then the Big 12 announced its deal with Fox and ESPN, which will be worth $31.7 million per school. That number was far enough below expectations that the Pac-12 lowered its estimates for the regents by about 10 percent. [...] The Pac-12’s willingness to sweeten the offer for U.C.L.A. also included a willingness to pay the buyout the Los Angeles school would have to fork over to break the Big Ten agreement.” (link)

“The competitive landscape of college athletics is changing. We need your help. The NIL era is here (and) whether the college athletics model will continue to evolve, we believe this will likely be our new normal for at least for the next few years. And while we may not all like what NIL has brought to college athletics, it does present an opportunity for our programs and our student-athletes. To put it directly, we need to embrace NIL in order to remain competitive. To put it even more directly, if we don't start embracing NIL by December, we may very well start losing players to other programs.” That’s Memphis AD Veatch in an email to the Ambassadors - a group of the school’s Tiger Leadership Circle, those who have given $500K+ to the Memphis Athletic Fund over a five-year period. Veatch takes it further: “If each of you as our Ambassadors were to contribute $1,000-2,000 per month for the next two to three years or $12,000-$24,000 per year to NIL opportunities, we can come together to achieve our goals and support our student athletes at a highly competitive level.” (link)

The Kansas Board of Regents approved a request for an amendment to the school’s FY23 capital improvements request and the program statement for the “11th and Mississippi Project,” which includes the football stadium and immediate area around it. The amendment included upping the Phase 1 cost from $220M to $335M. An economic impact study is underway and should be completed by February. Concept renderings are included and show a 600-person conference and event center that would be integrated into the north bowl of the stadium. (link, link)

Cleveland State unveils a new Master Plan that all-told has a $650M proposed price tag. Per the release: “A signature element of the new residential and entertainment neighborhood is a new proposed multi-purpose arena that would replace the university’s venerable Wolstein Arena. The 5,000 to 7,000 seat arena will be home to CSU basketball, concerts and other events. It could also house learning spaces for complementary academic programs like sport and entertainment management. The neighborhood connects Krenzler Field and the university’s softball field on the west side of campus to the new arena and current Student Rec Center in the east. Plans for additional recreation and athletics facilities include a new indoor field house and covered tennis courts.” Sasaki helped develop the plan. (link)

The announced attendance for the Ohio State vs Eastern Illinois MBB game Wednesday night was 8,350. It marked only the ninth time fewer than 10K fans have watched a regular-season game at Value City Arena and set a new low-attendance mark for the Buckeyes, surpassing the one set in the Charleston Southern game a week before (8,409). OSU AD Smith: “It doesn’t concern me at this point. We’ve got a whole new team. This team needs to gel and people need to get to know them, and they will. I think basketball is a sport where fans connect with the players. We’ve got a whole new team, so they need to learn about them. Once they come and see them, I think they’ll come back .I’m not concerned about it at this point in time. I’m probably more of a realist.” (link)

Southeast Missouri and UT Martin are tied atop the OVC standings with 4-0 records heading into the final week of the FB season. Due to several factors, including unbalanced schedules from membership transition, the two teams have not played head-to-head this season. If both schools either win or lose this weekend, all tiebreaking options will have been exhausted (including beating the exact same opponents), setting the stage for the final differentiator: a coin flip. If a coin flip is necessary, it will take place on Saturday evening after both games are completed. The flip will be witnessed by individuals from both schools, recorded, and also live streamed on Twitter. #tailsneverfails (link)

Tennessee football fans are on a mission to “Checker Vandy,” a plan that has been in place for a while, but was fueled yesterday by Vanderbilt’s football account tweeting a throwback memory to the Dores beating the Vols at Vanderbilt Stadium in 2012. Typically, UT fans coordinate outfits to make Neyland Stadium look like an orange and white checkerboard, but it has never been done at an opponent’s stadium. The programs matchup the final Saturday of this month. (link)

Yesterday's Evening Standard... |
The Athletic’s Mandel reports live from the California Board of Regents meeting, which started with the announcement that the board will vote on UCLA’s Big Ten membership on December 14. During the meeting itself, UCLA Chancellor Block explained the Bruins will spend roughly $10M additional per year by moving to the Big Ten. Block also argues that were it not for the Big Ten cash infusion, UCLA would have to tighten its athletic budget, which "likely" would include cutting sports. Meanwhile, Cal Chancellor Christ noted that she "decries" some of the recent changes in college sports, including pay-for-play, adding: “The consolidation of conferences… is not to the benefit of student athletes, in particular women's and Olympic sports." Regent/former Board Chair Perez after the meeting remarked that “this was a call that was made on the field and now we’re reviewing the call, seeing if there’s some substantive reason why the call should be overturned. … Regardless of whether they (UCLA) stay or go, regardless of whether Cal was impacted by the decision or not, what are our expectations for improvement of student athlete experience everywhere? Those are the questions that are still actively there." (link)

LEAD1 delivered a letter to ADs and other executive leaders across the industry advocating for the implementation of a COO to oversee FBS, as well as a complementary governing board. NCAA SVP for Basketball Gavitt was identified as a model for the FBS COO role. As for the board’s makeup, ESPN’s Dinich reports it would “primarily be comprised of people with significant football knowledge, and appointed by their conferences. There would also be a representative from the American Football Coaches Association, along with four independent directors, including at least two former student-athletes -- a combination of unbiased people and those who have a players' perspective, which the Knight Commission has separately been pushing for.” The board would have authority for all rules except those connected to academics, financial aid and health and safety. No word on an exact timeline for further discussion or how such a move could be impacted by the hiring of a new NCAA President. (link)

Multiple crises in recent years have prompted schools to shore up their mental health resources; however, the AP’s Russo notes that “only half of the 9,808 NCAA athletes who took a survey in late 2021 said they believe mental health is a priority to their athletics department. … Among the athletes surveyed by the NCAA, 53% said they believe their coaches are taking mental health concerns seriously.” Toledo AD Blair: “All of us have a certain amount of responsibility to be able to be a resource to the student athletes.” San Jose State AD Konya notes that “we’re in a better position now” as far as mental health resources and emphasis are concerned. “But it’s not foolproof and events like what happened here and what unfortunately happened at Virginia, those kinds of extreme cases are going to require really particular attention.” (link)

Virginia Tech AD Babcock covers several topics with The Athletic’s Bitter, including the future of FB HC Pry, about whom Babcock explains: “I guess what I would say to fans is I’ve had coaches in multiple sports shoot out like a rocket, I’ve had them come out mediocre, I’ve had them come out poorly. And the verdict on this decision is a year or years away. And it’s just too early to tell. But absolutely I empathize with three years of mediocrity and then this. I’m sure the patience level is wearing thin. … I like his plan on name, image and likeness. I like what they’ve done with the culture, and I know that’s an overused word, but the people close to the program, it’s evident. So that gives you enough of a foundation to go forward.” Babcock also notes the decision to sign a three-for-two FB series with Liberty is in large part a financial one. Bitter: “The Hokies gross about $3M for a home game, with operation costs of $1-1.2M, meaning a net of $1.8 to $2M per game. … But that’s not accounting for the money it costs to bring a team in — and that price has been skyrocketing.” Babcock said Virginia Tech has had trouble getting a one-off FBS opponent to come to Blacksburg for anything nearing even $1M. Meanwhile, the Liberty contract calls for Virginia Tech to pay the Flames $500K for every trip they make to Blacksburg. More from Babcock. (link)

U.S. Integrity Founder/CEO Holt says he flags approximately five college football games for gambling improprieties each week, telling CBS’ Dodd: “When we send an alert to every operator and regulator across the country, we're pretty sure there is something happening here that is not good. … [Improprieties] are going on right now. Anyone who says that's not happening is naïve to the marketplace." Holt goes on to explain how “micro portions” of games can influence the outcome. “It's a much easier proposition to go to a player and say, 'Look, I hope your team wins by 50, but I need you to throw two interceptions. I can't have you throw any touchdowns today, so when you get in the red zone, run the football.’” As sports and gambling become increasingly braided, Holt adds: "We don't have a month go by during the [academic year] where there's not at least one real issue around misuse of inside information. People being inappropriately paid, people being inappropriately compensated and disclosing information to betting groups who look to take advantage of it." Lots more. (link)

FTX Flop…
+ The Action Network's Rovell joins D1.ticker/Connect's Garcia Cichosz for a quick update on the impact of FTX's Chapter 11 filing on sports sponsorship, including stadium naming rights deals and NIL partnerships. Rovell talks about the long-tail impact the bankruptcy has on fintech and what's next for sports marketing. Rovell: "I don't think [the Chapter 11 filing] will change people not doing risky things; I think risky things will still be done because it's just the nature of trying to make money in an environment where there's not much money around, so you jump to [any opportunity], but I think maybe we should front-load [deals] or nothing. I think there's some reality to that, how the intricacy of a deal actually goes because of this." (link)
+ Ray & Counsel P.C. Principal Ray, who serves as the new CEO of FTX and who was tasked with cleaning up the messy situation at Enron over 20 years ago, paints a dire picture of what went on at FTX. “Never in my career have I seen such a complete failure of corporate controls and such a complete absence of trustworthy financial information as occurred here.” More. “I’m expecting total chaos,” one SEC staffer tells On3’s Nakos when discussing the impact of the transfer portal opening on December 5. One collective operator on the West Coast adds: “We’ve already gotten hit up quite a bit. I mean, that’s what we’re here for. We’re here to support the kids. And so we will have our ducks in a row and make sure that we can support as much as we can. At the same time, schools are going to screw up the alignment of the collective and their football program. I think that is going to happen, if not already happened. That’s what happens when donors try to play fantasy football. This isn’t fantasy football. And I think that’s where NIL has kind of gotten to with this donor involvement.” Many student-athletes have already announced their intention to transfer, and one SEC collective operator contends that doing so is smart if “you were good enough to warrant it,” adding: “You would almost use it as an exclusive negotiating window with your current team. And when you get to where you want it to be, you would just pull out before the portal opens.” (link)

Indiana FB HC Allen talks about the importance of NIL, asserting that it’s particularly game-changing in recruiting. “Both getting them (the recruits/transfers) to your school and retaining them, which is now a whole new level of things. You know [Ohio State FB HC] Day was very clear in what he said at the Big Ten Media Days before the season started. He needed $13M to keep his team intact. That got a lot of people's attention, but that's the reality for them and where they want to be at. And we got the big three in the Big Ten, which has been Penn State, Michigan and Ohio State historically have been the top-three winningest programs. And [Michigan HC] Harbaugh said we can do better than that, and [Penn State HC] Franklin said we at least gotta be right there because that's what everybody else is doing. And then I'm like, I'd love to have half of that.” Allen adds it’s still important to find guys who are the right fit for the culture, but “I'm telling you, they could love you as much as they want, they could be the most awesome person, they could love your culture, but they'll say, 'Coach, it's nice to meet you. I'm gonna go somewhere else and get my money.' And that's the reality.” (link)

We are convinced that the NIL industry is ripe for some consolidation to make things easier for all stakeholders, and our directory is going to help with that.” (link)
