The NCAA DI Council is expected to vote to shorten the duration of transfer portal windows, The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach reports. The council meets in Indianapolis on Tuesday and Wednesday. Florida Deputy AD Lynda Tealer: “The priority, I believe, for the council and most of the membership would be to have transfer windows that are closer to 30 days versus the 60 that currently exist. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee prefers 45 days. For sure, we will have a discussion during the council meeting about what the appropriate window lengths will be and if those windows will be consistent across all sports, so it is very much a point of conversation. … At some point, coaches are going to need to have some period of time where they’re neither in-season nor fully recruiting. Where we are right now, there is no opportunity for them not to be fully engaged in that way. That’s not really a sustainable way for people to approach their jobs.” (link)

ECU finished FY23 with a $3.8M budget deficit, and trustee Scott Shook credits Pirates AD Jon Gilbert for effectively managing expenses, something he believes state lawmakers will look favorably upon come budget time. Last year, the men’s basketball team generated 1,500 season tickets, and so far, 1,300 have been sold for the upcoming season, including 300 new season ticket holders. Overall, Gilbert expects 1,700 to 1,800 season tickets will be sold. He also believes improvements to Minges Coliseum, including a new LED lighting system in the coliseum’s Williams Arena, will help generate revenue. As for the legalization of sports gambling increasing revenue to the state and the UNC System, Gilbert remarks: “I go with the old adage: don’t count your chickens before they hatch. There are some revenue projections but I want to be fiscally responsible where we’re not spending money we don’t have.” (link)

Brown AD Grace Calhoun sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss returning to her alma mater, where she competed as a track and field student-athlete. Calhoun shares insight into why the return to Brown was the right fit for her and reflects on how her undergraduate experience in Providence impacted her leadership philosophy and style throughout her career. Calhoun and Garcia Cichosz also dive into Brown’s recent strategic plan, refreshed brand identity and department ethos. Calhoun on the return to Brown: “I just happened to hit a career and a life point where Brown needed a change and I think was ready to go through a transformational period. And to be able to work with an amazing president who I got to know because she was actually serving on the NCAA Board of Directors as I was part of that group and understanding that the sense of fit and being able to work collaboratively to really make change. So, again it was not something I had ever said, ‘Well, this would be the ultimate destination’ but one of those things that after getting here I can't imagine doing anything else.” Full interview. The SEC has fined Ole Miss $100K after fans stormed the field following the Rebels’ win over LSU on Saturday. Second and third offenses would cost the school $250K and $500K, respectively. For Conference games, fines are paid to the opposing institution. For non-conference contests, fines levied against schools for violation of the access to competition area policy are deposited into the SEC Post-Graduate Scholarship Fund. (link); While storming the field, one Ole Miss fan appeared to have inadvertently collided with an LSU player while shouting an obscenity about the Tigers. The LSU player consequently shoved the fan to the ground and was restrained by stadium security. Aspen Institute’s Sports & Society Editorial Director Jon Solomon: “Field storming is trouble waiting to happen. It’s crazy universities still allow this or don’t crack down on it. One day something truly awful is going to happen. It’s a bad recipe mixing the student body with the losing team.” (link)

The Athletic’s David Ubben wonders if former Michigan State Football HC Mel Tucker’s alleged transgressions will be held against other Black coaches, and one Black AC tells Ubben: “It’s gonna be a new stereotype. Is he a womanizer? What are his interests off the field?” Meanwhile, Kansas State Asst. HC Van Malone remarks: “It’s unfortunate. But every situation is an individual situation. Let’s not connect Mel and whatever is going on and the next coach with what another coach did.” Malone goes on to observe: “It was a long time before Black quarterbacks played in the NFL. Why is that? It was a long time before a Black guy was a middle linebacker in the NFL. Well now, we have a ton of both. There’s a thought process in our society, something in our society we just have to climb over. In our society, we just have a problem handing over the reins to a person of color. … As African American coaches, we have to continue to put ourselves in positions and do everything we can to prepare ourselves to be ready when our names are called. That’s the message. Continue to aim toward these goal posts. That’s what we’re being told, and that’s what we should be doing. But don’t move the goalposts.” More from Ubben. (link)

USC tops USA Today columnist Dan Wolken’s Misery Index, as Wolken argues there is “just no way to take the Trojans seriously” as long as Alex Grinch is USC’s defensive coordinator. “How can you after giving up 193 rushing yards and 564 overall while barely hanging on to a 48-41 win at Colorado? Sure, a win’s a win. Congratulations on squeaking by a program that went 1-11 last season. That’s not why USC went all-in to hire you, Lincoln. You’re supposed to be a championship coach. But being a championship coach requires making tough decisions, and the fact that Grinch is still your defensive coordinator indicates you might not have what it takes to make them.” Others in the Misery Index include LSU, Florida, UCF and NC State. NOVO Sports Group Founder & CEO/former WWE SVP/Head of Talent Operations & Strategy James Kimball talks with On3’s Pete Nakos about NOVO’s strategy and notes that while the firm will be “sport-agnostic,” he views baseball and golf as two sports that are ripe for major NIL growth. Kimball, who led the formation of the WWE’s Next In Line program, notes the two sports share two important criteria: “A prominent collegiate talent base that serves as a clear pipeline for the majority of talent professionally in the U.S. That’s one. And then two, have been mainstream, established commercial entities for decades of generations. … The real focus for us coming out of the gate, as we grow, will be spending a lot of our time and resources making real in-roads in those spaces.” Kimball also says NOVO will be a “full, one-stop shop for prospective athletes and obviously, a focus and emphasis will be on collegiate athletes as they transition professionally. And then on the brand and property side, too. That’s the other thing that I mentioned is while the pillar service is athlete representation, we’ll be providing consultation across brands and properties.” More. (link)

Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders’ decision to invite DaBaby to speak to the CU team ahead of Saturday's USC game was a mistake, USA Today’s Mike Freeman writes, noting that in 2021, DaBaby “made a series of ugly homophobic and misogynistic remarks at a concert. He also spread misinformation about HIV and AIDS. His remarks were so awful, and so damaging, that Elton John condemned him.” Freeman continues: “DaBaby shot and killed a man, saying he did so in self-defense. He assaulted a woman fan prior to a concert. There are other problematic accusations. This is who University of Colorado coach Deion Sanders invited to speak to his players before they played USC on Saturday. … Sanders was trying to rally his team prior to facing a tough opponent but that's who he picked to help him? Sanders couldn't find someone who didn't spread hate, who didn't kill someone, who didn't slap a woman? … This was Sanders' first big mistake at Colorado.” (link)

Washington President Ana Mari Cauce wrote a letter to JohnCanzano.com’s namesake to further clarify her comments surrounding media rights negotiations for the Pac-12. Cauce: “You are 100% percent correct that all of us presidents, and especially those like myself who had been serving on the executive board, bear responsibility for any and all decisions that results in the devaluation of our conference that led to eight teams leaving. In my news conference just days after our decisions, I very clearly took full responsibility for choosing to move on to the Big Ten, starting August 2, 2024, even at a partial share. I did not believe - and I do not believe now - that signing onto a deal that would have guaranteed less revenue than what we have now and included no guarantee of appearances on linear TV would have allowed us to remain competitive at the high level of performance we are enjoying this year. I also do not believe it would have kept the Pac-12 together as a viable Power 5 conference for much longer, as indicated by the exit clause.” More. (link)

UCF AD Terry Mohajir provides feedback on his meetings last week with House Small Business Committee in Washington D.C.: “I don’t think everybody understands what we do and how our athletes are treated. It’s not the ones I talked to in Florida, but outside the state, how far removed they are from understanding the enterprise and what we do daily.” Mohajir also comments on how he’s building football schedules with the new Big 12 membership: “It’s getting easier because I’m scheduling them further out, so there are more opportunities. Our philosophy has changed. In the American, we had a different philosophy. Now, we’ve had to pivot 180 degrees. Right now, we have to play a Power 5 non-conference opponent. We played Boise State this year and [the game] was counted as a Power Five [opponent]. The Big 12 voted to give us a waiver to count it, but going forward, we have to have Power 5 opponents in nonconference, which is required. That could change, but we’re still evaluating.” (link)

Boncom Brand Director Jake Welch examines New York-based Translation’s branding and marketing work with the Big 12 as the league re-identifies itself. A rep from Translation tells Welch: “It can’t be overlooked that student-athletes are the heartbeat of all these institutions. 17-22 year old kids that live and breathe ‘the culture’ and are the ambassadors of it on all their respective campuses, in Provo, Manhattan, Waco, and beyond. Our work aimed to, and will continue to, not only star real student-athletes but also pull in creative elements that we know resonate with them – from the right music and voiceover choices, to partnering with creators behind the camera that make relevant, massively appealing work.” Welch observes that finding a unifying strategy for a group of schools that spans three time zones is challenging, but Translation says: “Competition and passion transcends any geographic boundary. Our goal was always to land on a strategy that would help institutions rally around the Big 12’s vision of pioneering and this new era of collegiate athletics. … With the Big 12’s new wave of brand growth underway, (we’re) here to be a co-author and showcase how the Big 12 is just getting started and there is much more to come from the conference.” More. The D1.dossier for Ohio State is complete & ready to assist those of you with an interest in the opening in Columbus. Next up: James Madison. Maine AD Jude Killy: “It really helped me consolidate some research. I don’t know how many hours, or days, of research it saved me from finding information to the right links, but it was hours at a minimum and probably a day or two in total.” (link)

Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg after the Pokes’ 2-2 football start, which includes a home loss to South Alabama: “I know there is a high expectation and that is good. That is exactly what we want. You know the last couple of games didn’t meet the expectation and that is what creates the angst and the displeasure, whatever you want to call it. I know I’ve been taking a lot of advice, a fair amount. Again, all of that is good because what that says is that we have a passionate fan base that cares and that is a credit to the job Coach Gundy has done for the last 19-years at Oklahoma State. He has raised the bar and the level of expectations. There is nobody that wants to win more than he does, more than the coaches in the West End Zone, and more than the players in the West End Zone. I know they are working very hard in this off week and will continue to work hard for K-State and the games we play after that. Everybody is well aware of what the expectations are and working hard to meet those expectations.” (link)

Illinois State held the official ribbon cutting ceremony for its Indoor Practice Facility yesterday. Interim AD Jeri Beggs: “I know this is a time that so many of us have been eagerly awaiting. The student-athletes, especially, cannot wait to use this facility. The Indoor Practice Facility will have a tremendous, positive impact on our student-athletes across multiple sports.” Located on the former site of ISU football’s grass practice field, the IPF is a heated, opaque dual-membrane fabric air dome with insulation pockets for planned year-round use and a 100-yard practice field and run off areas with artificial turf. UNC Wilmington is the latest athletic department to partner with Collegiate Sports Connect & its Connect Talent portal to assist with the identification & hiring of administrative talent. Seahawks Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations Mark Wagner: “UNCW is a wonderful place full of great people, but we can’t be complacent, we have to keep improving the staff to support our student-athletes. Every hire is critical and needs to be treated as such. Collegiate Sports Connect gives us an advantage to identify and recruit the right people in this highly competitive market.” (link)

Oklahoma has increased its original capacity projection of 3,000 fans to 4,200 fans for the new Love’s Field softball stadium. This includes 3,543 fixed seats and an additional 657 in standing room. Sooners AD Joe Castiglione: “Since the start, we've approached the design of Love's Field with our fans in mind. Because we know the demand for OU Softball is sky high, we took great care to increase the capacity wherever we could while maintaining the overall fan experience.” (link)

When Chris Ducar took over as the North Carolina Women’s Soccer GM in 2021, he said Tar Heels HC Anson Dorrance asked two things of him: "build this brand and let me keep coaching until I die.” Ducar served as the goalkeeper coach for 26 years under Dorrance but now focuses on improving gameday ticket sales, overseeing recruiting, fundraising and coordinating activities with the school. In 2021 average home attendance was 2,350, but this year it is 3,408. Ducar, who reaches out to youth soccer teams and targets the student body, “What I need to let these people to know is ‘Hey, this is not the World Cup, this is the pre-World Cup.’ These are the players you are going to be watching on TV for the next four, eight, twelve years." The soccer program also paired up with a Sports Entrepreneurship class on campus this semester and students in the class were tasked with identifying the “pain points” for the program, which will be presented in the coming weeks. NIL Today…
+ Alabama Football HC Nick Saban says his program has not been approached by prospective student-athletes to pay for official visits via NIL deals, a current issue mentioned by outgoing Ohio State AD Gene Smith in Washington, D.C. last week. Saban adds: “But look, name, image and likeness is not really name, image and likeness. I think we all understand what it's become, and what we allowed it to become and I said long ago, and got very criticized for is this what we want college football to become? So it's becoming what it's becoming and that's ok. I mean, we'll just adapt and do what we have to do to compete, whatever the circumstances are. Do I think that it would be judicious to have some guard rails on some things? I think you can figure that one out just as well as anybody else.” (link)
+ The Providence-focused Friar Family Collective will distribute $1M to Men’s Basketball student-athletes this season. Business model for the collective: “80% of the revenue raised goes to athletes, 15% is for the Collective’s operating expenses, and 5% goes to consulting entities that assist with endorsement deals, compensation to athletes, compliance, and taxes.” (link)
