Michigan State AD Alan Haller addresses the search for a new football head coach in a letter to the fan base: “We will thoroughly evaluate and do everything required to find the right individual to lead the Spartan football program. Throughout the process, I won’t be able to provide many updates. I realize that our community has a tremendous passion for Spartan football and that there’s a great desire for more information about this process. However, privacy is important to attract top-caliber candidates, most of whom are involved in their own current seasons. I expect that you will hear a lot of names and rumors. I expect to speak with many individuals throughout this process. While some are candidates, others will be resources for me as I go about my due diligence to ensure the best hire for Michigan State.” Full letter. (link)

Southern Miss AD Jeremy McClain in a letter to Golden Eagles fans, “Unfortunately, football season has started much slower than many of us had hoped, and I know there is frustration for our fans, our staff, and our student-athletes. The importance of being successful in football is not lost on me or anyone associated with the university, so we will continue to work to get it right.” McClain also highlights fundraising success as the Eagle Club posted new records in FY23 in both total members (2,871) and total giving ($2.3M). Additionally, the Southern Miss Athletics Foundation hauled in a record $8.7M overall. As far as the Top 25 Strategic Plan for the department, which was announced in August 2022, McClain says 10 of the 25 goals have been met or surpassed with “serious momentum around several more.” More from Hattiesburg. Tennessee Senior Assoc. AD/Chief of Staff Marcus Hilliard joins AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown to discuss paying it forward within the industry. Hilliard reviews his career trajectory in terms of the leaders he’s worked for, such as former Duke AD Kevin White, Austin Peay AD Gerald Harrison and Vols AD Danny White, and shares insight into how to provide accountability for high-achieving individuals. Hilliard and Brown also cover the value of being a team player, the need for true acts of service and the importance of mentorship. Hilliard explains it’s important to clearly communicate expectations up front. “Understanding what the goals were and how we’re going to do that. Gerald did a really good job of giving people kind of blueprints to say, ‘Hey, this is how we're going to get there. We’re going to get there together’. So laying out, ‘Hey here's coaches-wise [what we need] competitively, here's where we need to be academically, this is where the student-athletes [need to be]’ and communicating it broad-based, making sure that everybody knows what the goals and what the expectations are, but also most importantly letting them know that we're going to help them along the way.” Full Q&A on ADU. LSU has been sanctioned in federal court after data was wiped from the school-issued phones of former Women’s Tennis Co-HCs Michael and Julia Sell. The Sells, who were co-defendants in an ongoing lawsuit in which 10 former students say the university mishandled their cases of sexual misconduct and assault, were eventually dismissed from the case, but “lawyers representing both sides agreed in late 2021 to preserve electronically stored information,” per The Advocate’s Andrea Gallo. LSU argued the Sells' private attorneys should have told them they were obligated to preserve their phone data before returning their phones to LSU, adding: “LSU IT staff who received the devices testified that the phones were empty of all data when examined after their return.” The Sells both testified that they did not delete data from their phones. U.S. Magistrate Judge Scott Johnson in his ruling stated it “stretches the bounds of reason” to think the Sells’ phones would contain no relevant communications and ordered LSU to pay reasonable expenses, including attorney’s fees and costs, that the plaintiffs incurred over LSU’s lapses. Iowa State TE DeShawn Hanika’s illegal sports gambling case has been dismissed after a Story County judge ruled the state waited too long to indict him. Per the AP, Hanika's attorneys originally asked for the dismissal – and prosecutors agreed – because Hanika was not indicted within 45 days after he waived a preliminary trial, as state law requires. The deadline was September 24, and he was not indicted until September 28. (link)

The Florida High School Athletic Association is in the process of drafting an NIL proposal for its board of directors to review, per On3’s Pete Nakos, who reports: “Sources have indicated to On3 in recent days that NIL could be allowed for high school athletes in the Sunshine State as early as January, around the first of the year. The governor’s office has also made it clear it could step in if need be.” The FHSAA Board of Directors is next scheduled to meet November 5-6. It is unclear whether a proposal will be ready for their consideration by then. (link)

Belmont is hosting an NBA training camp for the second time in three years, this time for the Chicago Bulls, who decided to come to Nashville after hearing positive feedback from the New Orleans Pelicans in 2021. Belmont AD Scott Corley: “Adam Barnes, who used to play for us, works for the Pelicans and we ended up hosting them for a week of practice in the Crockett Center. I think more of these NBA teams are looking to kind of break up the monotony of their camps and are looking to take the show on the road a little bit. … They saw pictures of our facility. I think Nashville is attractive for obvious reasons and it kind of grew from there. [Bruins Director of Player Development] Kerron [Johnson] started having conversations and we started seeing if we could host them." The Bulls also considered holding the camp at Vanderbilt. (link)

Industry leaders cautioned against overly ambitious ticket pricing during SBJ’s recent AXS DRIVE conference, during which AXS CEO Bryan Perez remarked: “I’m worried a little bit that we’re all getting hooked on the drug of how good business is right now, and I worry that we’re being too aggressive on price increases. People are starting to feel the impact of inflation, and I just wonder how long that desire to be at live events – which was built up over the lockdown of the pandemic – is going to sustain us. We need to be really careful. We need to make sure we have $14 seats, because we may wake up one day and it just tipped over and we wonder where everybody went.” Monumental Sports & Entertainment President of Business Operations/Chief Commercial Officer Jim Van Stone added: “Not every customer wants the same thing. So, making sure that you have a diversity of experiences in all different areas of your building is really the most critical element.” More. (link)

After declining for five straight non-COVID seasons, MLB attendance through September 26 was up 9.2% over the 2022 season, according to the league. SBJ’s Erik Bacharach: “That marks the biggest year-over-year jump in attendance in the 30-team era, which began in 1998, and the gain of more than 5M will be at minimum the second biggest in a non-expansion or shortened season since 1947, according to Baseball Reference. The league will top 70M for the first time since 2017. Additionally, eight teams will finish with attendance over 3M for the first time in 10 years, and more than half the league will finish with attendance above 2.5M for the first time since 2008.” MLB CRO Noah Garden attributes the increase in large part to the widening of the bases, new shift rules and the pitch clock and notes those changes were amplified by the introduction of a new balanced schedule in which every team plays each other at least once, along with the expanded postseason format that keeps more teams in the hunt all season long. Oregon State AD Scott Barnes will not pursue the Washington job and told OSU staffers he is staying in Corvallis, according to The Oregonian’s Nick Daschel. Barnes told Daschel he was contacted about the UW job and had a conversation but decided not to pursue the opening. Barnes: “The reason that I’m here is I’m looking at this crisis with an opportunity at the other end. Beaver Nation is rallying around us. The university leadership group is as galvanized as we’ve ever been around this issue. They’re treating this as a university issue, not an athletics issue. I’m energized by that. We’ve got a lot more fight ahead of us, so I am committed to being here for that.” (link)

NBC has expressed interest in acquiring part of the media rights for the expanded College Football Playoff, according to NBC Sports President of Acquisitions and Partnerships Jon Miller, who tells Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich and Michael McCarthy: “I think the College Football Playoffs are a very unique, exciting package. The expansion obviously brings a lot more attention and focus to the sport in December and January.” That said, Miller notes there have been no “serious” conversations yet; however, “when the [inventory] comes up, certainly we’ll engage and have conversations and see what happens.” (link)

SBJ’s Michael Smith profiles Playfly’s growth in its first three years, and Founder/CEO Mike Schreiber insists there is no three-to-five-year exit strategy. Instead, he says the company is cash flow-positive with “low, low debt” and a “ton of capacity to buy more things and spend to grow our business further.” In fact, he adds, the company is more likely to explore “taking on some new investors, or we may buy out some of our existing investors over time, but at the end of the day, we’re not looking right now in any way for some major sort of event at the moment. And if we get sizable enough and we have other legs of our business in the pro side and the high school side, esports, etc., there could be a public market view for us in the future. But it comes with the health of the public markets, and it comes with our size at the time.” Also very notable from Smith: “Playfly has two…deals for blue-chip properties, one in the Big Ten and another in the ACC, that are in the pipeline and could be announced in the coming days.” Full profile. Alabama AD Greg Byrne talks about the thinking behind the Crimson Tide’s new Advantage Center and tells SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “Our LEARFIELD contract, we were at a point we were going to extend or look to see what our options were. Through [LEARFIELD CEO] Cole [Gahagan] and my conversations, I just had the feeling that multimedia rights is one of the most legitimate forms of NIL that there is and said, ‘OK, let’s figure out ways that can benefit our young people and our program from deal opportunities, but also from an education and growth standpoint, too.’” Gahagan tells Portnoy: “This is the embodiment of where we are going as an industry. I’ve said for quite a long time now that I think the blurring of the lines with traditional multimedia rights services and NIL activity — specifically brands partnering with student athletes — is happening more and more by the day. … We’re not agents, but we represent 15,000 brands globally. So whether we want to or not, or whether we would like to or not, we have a responsibility to bring those brands to the table to help create opportunities for student athletes.” (link)

DePaul AD DeWayne Peevy talks about his goals for the department after recently launching a $60M campaign aimed at constructing a new basketball practice facility and a modernization of the Sullivan Athletic Center and McGrath-Phillips Arena. “This facility project, there’s no way I would have pushed forward if I didn’t feel like it had a major impact on net tuition revenue, which is our biggest and scariest problem going ahead. … The data shows that going to private schools if you’ve got a team that’s in the NCAA Tournament…in a five-year period, you’re talking about a 4 to 6% increase in enrollment. That’s 1,000 people for us. When you’re talking about $60M, that’s a real investment.” Peevy also talks about the importance of reconnecting with alumni, explaining that’s a “big piece for everyone involved from the education side. If we’re trying to do this billion-dollar campaign, we’ve got to connect with people that care about us.” (link)

Northern Iowa has expanded its Our Tomorrow fundraising campaign to include a new wrestling facility. The building will be financed entirely by private gifts, and while preliminary cost estimates are still being determined, the “commitment of donors will ultimately dictate the size and scope of the project.” President Mark Nook: “Adding a new wrestling training facility to the Our Tomorrow campaign is part of our unwavering commitment to further elevate our wrestling program that competes in the Big 12 Conference. We strongly support all our student-athletes at UNI, but the situation at the West Gym escalated to the point where a long-term solution is needed to keep our wrestling program thriving for years to come. Incorporating a new wrestling facility into our existing fundraising campaign is that solution. It is an important part of our commitment to grow the sport of wrestling in Iowa." (link)

Virginia Tech Executive Assoc. AD for External Affairs and Advancement Brad Wurthman, Maryland Senior Assoc. AD for External Operations Carrie Blankenship and Cal Senior Assoc. AD/Chief Marketing & Communications Officer Markeisha Everett join Connect’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss how various department structures can have an impact on productivity and success and defining fit when hiring. Everett explains that when she is hiring she looks for attitude and effort. “College athletics continues to change. The things that we were doing three years ago are not the same things that we’re doing. … So, can you come in, can you be innovative, can you keep the right attitude because we might have to pivot and things might not go how we wanted to. Or things might go how we wanted to, but in each of those that attitude is going to make the difference.” Full interview on Connect. (link)

+ Former CNN Worldwide President Jeff Zucker has acquired a minority stake in Front Office Sports through his investment company, Redbird IMI. Terms were not disclosed, though Bloomberg reports RedBird IMI’s investment in FOS values the company at $40M. Zucker: “Audiences are more interested than ever in the business of sports, and this investment will allow Front Office Sports to create even more compelling news content that draws people in.” FOS Founder/CEO Adam White will continue in his post, and Zucker will join the company’s board of directors. (link); Morning Brew’s Jacob Donnelly offers some instant analysis: “What I find interesting about the FOS deal is that Crain's is out. In Feb 2022, they acquired 20% at a $25m valuation. In Oct 2023, they've sold that 20% at a $40m valuation. I suspect Crain's realized that being minority investors isn't their strategy and this was a good return. Everyone wins.” (link)
