Maryville AD Lonnie Folks will retire after five years leading his alma mater. Lonnie’s tenure has been nothing short of a golden era of mentorship, growth, and community building at Maryville. Saginaw Valley State selects Louisiana-Monroe (DI) Senior Assoc. AD for Communications and Marketing John Lewandowski as its new AD, starting October 9. President George Grant: "John brings a wealth of experience and innovative ideas for how to increase the visibility and reputation of our university and its athletic programs. He has a strong work ethic and a successful track record of increasing attendance at home athletic contests, as well as growing social media following and community engagement for university athletic programs, and we expect him to do the same for SVSU." NCAA News & Notes:

+ Notable for those thinking about a move to DI, the DI Council voted to increase the application fee from $5K to $5M. (link)

+ The NCAA will advocate for updating existing state sports betting laws to “protect student-athletes from harassment or coercion, address the negative impacts of problem gambling and protect the integrity of NCAA competition.” Specifically, the NCAA is calling for mandatory reporting hotlines to report such behavior to law enforcement, increased penalties for bettors who harass student-athletes and mandatory education for operators to help identify harassment. Further, the NCAA believes any sports wagering advertisement also should include information about the harassment hotline, problem gambling and prohibitions on harassment related to sports wagering. Revenue generated from sports betting, the NCAA adds, should be allocated in part toward education to support the higher-risk college student population, including student-athletes. The association also contends states should have regulations identifying prohibited bettors and prohibit individuals younger than 21 from gambling on sports. More. (link)

At a Women’s Soccer match last month between Virginia State and Guilford (DIII), VSU leaders called for an apology and an investigation into accusations of racial slurs and “monkey noises” towards Trojans student-athletes. VSU, in a statement, writing: “While there have been direct apologies to our administration, VSU says that our student-athletes also deserve a personal apology.” Per GC: “Based on those conversations [with more than 30 individuals] and a review of available audio and video, Guilford’s investigation found the heckling of the Virginia State team originated from a group of 14 individuals. The investigation concluded that the comments directed by fans toward VSU players was very unsportsmanlike. Three students were brought up on student conduct disciplinary action for heckling and one student was held out of an athletic contest for violation of the College’s athletic code of conduct. The investigation did not discover any evidence that racist remarks were directed by Guilford fans toward VSU players. However, the fact that VSU supporters found the environment to be extremely unwelcoming for their players is of deep concern to the College and resulted in action that has been taken.” (link, link)

FootballScoop reports Clark Atlanta has dismissed Football HC Willie Slater after less than two seasons. Per the school: “The decision comes after an evaluation of unresolved challenges that the CAU football team has experienced during the 2023 season. Many opportunities to make impactful changes were explored with minimal success. [...] As always, the welfare of our students is paramount, and we will move forward expeditiously to make the necessary reforms.” (link)
