Extra Points purveyor Brown examines whether Congress should provide help to the NCAA and college athletics by highlighting “few high-level principles that, in my professional opinion, could inform sound policy.” Brown starts by noting that college sports provides opportunities that are worth protecting, including its function as a mechanism for upward mobility. “There are currently north of 190,000 athletic scholarships given out across DI and DII. If, as college sports change, we lose 50,000 of those...will they be replaced by 50,000 academic scholarships? Will those opportunities vanish into the higher education bureaucracy? What would that mean for equity in access to education.” Brown concludes: “I could be wrong about this, but I don't think it is realistic for the NCAA to simply throw up their hands and say 'okay, we're doing collective bargaining now, you win.' After all, management can't create a union to bargain with...labor has to do that, and college athletes will be one of the hardest groups to organize in the world. Clarification from the NLRB and federal courts could also smooth out that process. Without some sort of brokered retreat from amateurism, I also worry that the unintended consequences could be very significant...for Olympic sports, for women's sports, for educational access, and even potentially for D-II and D-III. I'm not expecting the federal government to step in and create a Ministry of Sport to fill some of those development voids, like most countries do. Without a solid post-amateurism plan, I am concerned that many people could get hurt.” More. (link)

The Great Midwest will add Mercyhurst and Hiram (DIII) as associate members in STUNT, increasing the membership to eight. Hiram will join for this year with the Lakers set to join for 2023-24. Commissioner Daeger: “The ability to partner with Hiram and Mercyhurst in these early stages of STUNT’s rapid growth and development will enhance the experience for our student-athletes and provide additional competition opportunities. … The addition of these two outstanding institutions, coupled with the recent announcements by three current members planning to sponsor the sport in 2023-24 illustrates the strong interest in STUNT. These developments along with the great opportunity to support the female student-athlete demand for this emerging sport made the recent decision to sponsor STUNT an easy one. We couldn’t imagine failing to bring this championship online considering this demand and substantial growth in high school and college STUNT sponsorship.” (link)

Academy Award-winning documentarian Proudfoot is pushing for Delta State to strip the name of segregationist politician Sillers from its basketball arena in favor of alumna Harris-Stewart, who helped DSU to three consecutive national titles and scored the first points in Olympic women’s basketball history. Harris-Stewart was the subject of Proudfoot’s acclaimed film. Proudfoot: “I think it could bring a lot of pride and positivity to the university, which is scrambling for enrollment and a story to tell. Delta State produced a global phenomenon in Lusia Harris. Its survival depends on its ability to inspire and attract students. What better thing could it do than lift up and celebrate one of its most distinguished alumni. There could not be a better marketing opportunity for the university.” Proudfoot has offered to put his Oscar on permanent display at the arena, should DSU go through with the renaming. (link)
