Troy AD Jones sits down with D1.ticker/Connect’s Eargle to discuss several topics as the Trojans move into 2023, including how the department plans to leverage its conference championship and bowl win in football, his thoughts on the Transformation Committee’s report, and the study abroad initiative. Jones believes the two most difficult endeavors in college athletics are winning and building facilities and tells Eargle: “It takes a lot of people, it takes a lot of effort, it takes a lot of resources all pulling the same way. Right now we’re about to release in about a month and a half almost a $13M baseball stadium renovation. … We’re going to release a strategic plan that will have part of our facility master plan hopefully in the next week or two, which is going to guide us over the next three years.” Jones says the study abroad initiative was born out of the chancellor’s office and “what we’re looking for is we want them to have experiential learning, really for them to be able to go down there and immerse themselves in a different culture and a different language and at the same time receive academic credits. At the same time, we want to be able to put community services involved in this, give back to different countries we are visiting.” Check out the full interview on Connect. (link)

Utah AD Harlan joins LEARFIELD University Partnership Group EVP Hamilton From the Chair to discuss several topics, including the Utes’ back-to-back Pac-12 championships, the school’s success in gymnastics and skiing, the departures of USC and UCLA, Commissioner Kliavkoff’s role in navigating the conference through uncertain times and more. On working with Kliavkoff, Harlan explains that the league’s boss has been “transparent in his approach,” adding: “He wanted to listen and learn, kind of admitting to all of us, ‘Hey, I’m not a practitioner. You guys have been in this business, so help me as we go through this.’” Following the news that the Bruins and Trojans would leave, Harlan explains there is a “duality” that exists and is composed of pride in the conference and the duty of protecting one’s own university. “The good news is…those two can be synchronous. You can move the conference forward and also move your school forward. … I remember July probably being as down as I’ve been, and I try not to get down in this job because there’s so many ups and downs in this job.” Ultimately, Harlan says he’s learned not to take it personally. “I think I went through taking it personally with Mike and Martin. I was upset with them, and I realized sometime in the first part of August those guys are doing what they think is best, and you have to respect our colleagues.” Lots more. (link)

Knight Commission CEO Perko joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Fischer from the NCAA Convention to discuss the commission’s presentation on escalating compensation and buyouts, revenue distribution from the College Football Playoff and March Madness, the commission’s work to convince Power 5 leaders to adopt its recommendations and more. Perko cites former Penn State President Barron’s remarks during the Knight Commission’s presentation as sage advice moving forward. “Budgeting in any case is challenging, and the best time to make some big changes is when there’s new revenue that hasn’t been budgeted yet, and that’s the moment we’re in right now with the CFP. He also used the example of when the Big Ten became the first conference to start its own network, that was a huge amount of new revenues coming into the Big Ten conference, so those Big Ten presidents agreed to send a certain portion of that money to university academics.” Lots more in the full interview, now live on Connect. Oregon State AD Barnes confirms the $162M Reser Stadium renovation is still slated to be complete in time for the Beavers’ home opener on September 9. Check out the progress via The Oregonian. (link) |
Extra Points purveyor Brown examines whether Congress should provide help to the NCAA and college athletics by highlighting a “few high-level principles that, in my professional opinion, could inform sound policy.” Brown starts by noting that college sports provide opportunities that are worth protecting, including its function as a mechanism for upward mobility. “There are currently north of 190,000 athletic scholarships given out across DI and DII. If, as college sports change, we lose 50,000 of those...will they be replaced by 50,000 academic scholarships? Will those opportunities vanish into the higher education bureaucracy? What would that mean for equity in access to education.” More. (link)

The Drake Group earlier this month sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) asking it help reconcile gender inequities in NIL, per Front Office Sports’ Christovich. In its missive, the Drake Group explained: “We do not write to suggest that OCR stem this flow of cash to college athletes, but rather to alert OCR that this cash is, with the blessing and/or cooperation of the 1000+ universities in the NCAA, flowing predominantly to men.” The group went on to suggest the DOE confirm that Title IX applies to certain NIL deals. Drake Group President Zimbalist: “Most institutions have virtually ignored their Title IX obligations to equally support male and female athletes in publicity, promotion, recruiting, and athletics financial aid. That preferential treatment of male athletes continues when athletic directors and coaches openly ask NIL collectives to assist their athletic program recruiting efforts by providing NIL payments to prospective and current athletes and the operation of such recruiting collectives primarily benefits male athletes from a single institution.” (link)

More NIL Today…
+ The Purdue-focused Boilermaker Alliance is growing and looking to grow its staff of full-time employees beyond the lone individual it has now. President/CEO McKean: “We’ve taken things to the point where we can with having just one employee and everybody else trying to work off the side of our desk. It has gotten complex enough that we need to build some things out in order to take us to the next level.” McKean also explains the collective is “looking at setting up a separate entity that would be able to also handle the for-profit situations. There are a lot of Purdue companies that want to help, that want to participate. Businesses aren’t concerned about the tax deductible status, because they can write things off as business expenses. But those businesses generally want a quid pro quo. They want sponsorship, they want advertising. If an athlete is going to come, they want to be able to benefit. Under the not-for-profit model, you can’t really do that.” (link)
+ San Francisco AD Williams highlights The Hilltop Club as a collective to which donors can contribute and support Dons student-athletes’ NIL endeavors. (link)
+ On3 CEO Terry tells OutKick the Coverage: “I really don't think the majority of the elite (recruits) are picking a school based on the NIL outcome. I think they are picking their choices around the schools that are participating in NIL. There's a fundamental difference here. Because I think of the athletes we’ve surveyed, that we speak anonymously with, and we pair it with the data that we’re talking with the collectives and the coaches, they’re all generally in the same range until they get into a desperation phase. And there are several instances where, ‘We have to have that kid. It’s not an option. We haven’t recruited well or he’s the key to our season next year. What’s the number?’ And there are those instances that are happening right now. Those instances are not that $3-4M kind of stuff. That’s baloney.” (link)

World Economic Forum…
+ Takeaways from the WEF’s meeting on the labor market: Hiring is slowing down globally amidst economic uncertainty and the balance of power has tipped slightly back towards employers, but labor markets are still relatively tight compared to before the COVID-19 pandemic; sustainability, cybersecurity and sales roles are among the fastest-growing jobs and offer some of the strongest opportunities for job seekers; and equipping the workforce of the future with universal access to better education, jobs and skills will ensure we are in a better position to weather economic headwinds through 2023 and beyond. (link)
+ Experts note cyberattacks are increasing in frequency and sophistication with Oxford professor Creese warning: “This storm is brewing, and it's really hard to anticipate just how bad that will be.” (link) + The metaverse is forecast to become an $800B market by 2024, and WEF members are looking to advance consensus among stakeholders on two tracks of work: metaverse governance and economic and societal value creation. (link)
+ Per Adecco Group research, 61% of workers worldwide fear their salary is not high enough to cope with inflation, while 60% believe the green transition will require them to reskill. Tulane AD Dannen joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Fischer at the NCAA Convention to discuss the Green Wave’s thrilling journey to the Cotton Bowl, how to leverage the momentum of the FB season, College Football Playoff expansion and more. Dannen says there are several ways in which the department will try to capitalize on the current success. “We have some facility aims. We’ve had some plans, and they’ve ramped up as we get more and more people engaged, and I have a meeting next week where I’m going to ask a lot of people for a lot of money and get those things done. Our collective went from $100K at the start of the year to $250K at the end of the year to over $1M now. So, we’re trying to promote into that space as well directly to benefit the student-athletes.” Dannen also offers a delicate assessment of the current state of NIL, telling Fischer: “Whenever I talk NIL, the first thing is everybody’s lying, and I remind everybody everybody’s lying. The numbers that you hear are lies. People are leveraging, agents are leveraging coaches, agents are leveraging collectives, so the numbers aren’t real. … I think we’ll start to see some failure to live up to promises in collectives. You’re starting to hear anecdotally some of that right now. I’m a believer that we don't want to overreact because we don’t like what we’re seeing.” Lots more on Connect. (link)

Utah is now the lone Under Armour school in the Pac-12, and Utes AD Harlan tells The Salt Lake Tribune he sees that as a positive. “Various reasons have now allowed us to be sort of the signature carrier of partnership in the West with them moving on from Cal and UCLA. We’re very, very appreciative of them. There’s a lot of things they do for us.” The deal runs through June 2027 and calls for Utah to receive $1.01M per year along with a $4.93M annual apparel allowance which increases to $5.84M in 2027, and Harlan adds: “I don’t think we’ve outgrown the deal. We’re constantly innovating with them. They’ve been involved in our NIL programming, which we’re very grateful for, did a commercial with our baseball team, soccer team. They’re a multibillion-dollar company, and you don’t really outgrow a multibillion dollar company.” (link)

Oklahoma State AD Weiberg provided an update to OSU faculty on the state of the athletic department, noting the Cowboys owe $2.425M in debt service this year, the lowest amount in the Big 12. The debt service will go up with renovations this year, but Weiberg said OSU will still have the league’s lowest debt service. Asked about what steps OSU is taking to protect players from brain injuries, Weiberg explained: “We’re watching the latest technologies and all of our players wear helmets that perfectly fit their head, made just for them. It’s expensive but it’s an investment.” (link)

Dayton MBB student-athletes were criticized by gamblers following the team’s loss to VCU, Flyers AD Sullivan confirms. UD HC Grant alluded to the fact during his postgame press conference following the Flyers’ victory over Davidson, saying: “There’s some laws that have recently been enacted, that to me, it could really change the landscape of what college sports is all about. And when we have people that make it about themselves and attack kids because of their own agenda, it sickens me. They have families. They don’t deserve that. Mental health is real. … I’m just asking all the Flyer fans just to understand that we’re dealing with 18-, 21-, 22-year-olds, and this is about them.” (link); Further, the Ohio Casino Control Commission Executive Director Schuler says the commission may look into state bettors making violent comments to student-athletes over gambling losses on social media and put them on a sports betting exclusion list, per XL Media’s Linnehan, who also reports the following from Sullivan: “The University of Dayton appreciates the commission's attention to this issue. Anything that protects the best interests of student-athletes across the state is something worth exploring.” (link)

+ The D1.dossier for Colgate is now available for those of you researching the opportunity in Hamilton. Prairie View A&M & Hawaii are up next. Gardner-Webb AD Goodrich: “On the front end of the process, the information provided by D1.dossier saved me at least 12 hours of research time. I was able to use those hours to not only prepare my interview responses, but also to continue to do my current job at a high level. Undoubtedly, it helped me land my first AD opportunity, and furthermore, on the back end of the process, the D1.dossier information has helped me to be very effective the first thirty days in the chair.” (link)

“In a just world, the ADs would have made the 2023 football season feel like Squid Game for the defectors,” JohnCanzano.com’s webmaster writes about the Pac-12 schedule, noting that the league instead “took the high road” by not punishing USC and UCLA. Canzano appears to take some solace, however, in the idea that “the Trojans and Bruins won’t be given a wide berth in the Big Ten. They won’t be treated like royalty. They’ll get no breaks. They’ll enjoy no perks. I covered the Big Ten as a beat reporter in the 1990s. USC and UCLA may come from sunny Southern California, but in the Midwest the sun always shines brightest on Ohio State and Michigan. UCLA is Indiana. USC is Penn State. That’s the new reality for the soon-to-be departed. The Buckeyes and Wolverines cast a cold shadow.” (link)
|
Canzano also reports the Pac-12 schedule wasn’t unanimous among ADs. “There were three final drafts presented to the members, I’m told. The process gave each school a chance to vote for their preferred version. Five points were awarded to each institution’s No. 1 pick, three points for the No. 2 pick, and one point for No. 3 choice. The ‘A’ draft won. It received a first-place vote from eight of the 12 conference athletic directors. The ‘B’ and ‘C’ drafts each received two first-place votes.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Wilner assesses the Pac-12’s media rights strategy after Commissioner Kliavkoff remarked last month that there’s “no need for a rush” and concludes the conference needs a deal in place by March. “If the process bleeds into the spring, anxiety on the 10 remaining campuses will soar. Presidents and athletic directors will seek escape hatches. Options that once seemed untenable will grow more attractive.” One source adds: “The Pac-12 cannot get overconfident. If we know anything about college sports, it’s that you can’t assume the status quo will last.” Wilner acknowledges that as of now the “remaining Pac-12 schools either have nowhere to go, no reason to leave, or both,” making Kliavkoff’s position understandable. “But you know when the realignment knife strikes? When it’s least expected.” (link)

Massachusetts AD Bamford is the latest AD to encourage fans to support NIL and endorses the Massachusetts Collective and GoMassNIL. “Collectives have developed into an important component of the NIL landscape and we fully support our student-athletes working with qualified collectives to monetize their NIL. These two new collectives have deep ties to the University of Massachusetts and will undoubtedly help enrich our Minutemen and Minutewomen in this new NIL era." (link, link)

USC is naming the field at Katherine B. Loker Track Stadium in honor of alumna and 11-time Olympic medalist Felix. President Folt: “When Allyson and I spoke about naming the field after her, she responded with the grace and humility she has shown throughout her life. The Allyson Felix Field will recognize her immense achievements as a sports legend and Trojan — while also showing our admiration for her role as an entrepreneur, advocate and champion for women. … My hope is that students playing on the Allyson Felix Field — or just walking by — will see her name prominently displayed and be curious to learn more about her talent, grit and generosity.” (link)

+ College Basketball on Fox is averaging 1.25M viewers through Sunday, up 35% over last season, according to Fox Sports EVP/Head of Strategy and Analytics Mulvihill, who adds: “For the moment that’s the top average CBB audience of any network. Not super confident that’s going to last but to be #1 for even half a season is pretty good progress.” (link)
+ Oklahoma and LEARFIELD on Tuesday launched the first episode of Championship Mindset, an original-content series focusing on OU softball. The series, according to OU, will feature “never-before-seen interviews with the team's coaches and student-athletes, giving fans a special and unique look into the legacy that is Oklahoma softball.” (link)
+ Texas A&M has also banned TikTok from its campus Wi-Fi, joining Texas, which announced it would do the same earlier this week after Governor Abbott directed state agencies to ban the app on government-issued devices.
