On the Move:

+ The SUNYAC will add SUNY Canton and SUNY Morrisville as full members in 2024-25 to maintain its membership at 10, with the departure of SUNY Brockport and SUNY Geneseo at the end of 2023-24. Commissioner Tom DiCamillo: "As an associate member in the sports of men's and women's ice hockey, as well as field hockey, it was a natural progression for the Mustang athletic program to become a full-time member of the SUNYAC. Morrisville's array of athletic teams complements the sports offered by the SUNYAC, while its geographic location is advantageous for most member institutions. [...] SUNY Canton provides a strong athletic program with proven leadership in the geographic footprint of the North Country that is a tremendous fit for many of our current member institutions. Like Morrisville, inviting Canton to move from associate membership in two sports to a full-time member of the conference was a natural step for its competitive and growing athletic programs." The league will also sponsor Men's Wrestling and add five associate members across multiple sports: Ithaca, RIT, St. John Fisher and Utica for wrestling and Alfred State for Men’s & Women’s Track & Field. + Anna Maria will exit the GNAC and join the MASCAC as its 9th full member, with Men's Hockey starting in 2024-25 and the entire AMCATS department moving for 2025-26. Commissioner Angela Bauman: “This is the first time since 1974 the MASCAC has added a core member institution and is a momentous moment for our core member institutions and student-athletes. The MASCAC is a 53 year old conference and adding Anna Maria College is geographically consistent with our core members, helps to increase sport sponsorship and secures the future of the MASCAC in our great state of Massachusetts. This decision by our Presidents and Athletics Directors advances the MASCAC membership’s strategic goal of increasing our membership to protect our core membership and provide outstanding student-athlete opportunities for the next 50 years.” (link)

+ The CCS will add provisional DIII member Asbury, starting next fall, keeping the league's membership at nine. Commissioner Beth Vansant: “From the beginning of the formation of the Collegiate Conference of the South, expanding membership has been a topic of conversation. [...] Asbury truly understands the NCAA Division III philosophy and commitment to a holistic approach for student-athletes.” (link)

+ The AMCC is adding Penn Tech as an affiliate member in Men’s Wrestling. (link)

+ Wheaton (MA) Men’s Water Polo will join the MPSF beginning in the 2024 season. (link)

This weekend, Gallaudet Football will don the first 5G-connected helmets through a collaboration with AT&T. The QB will receive the play in augmented reality on the digital display located within the visor. AT&T’s 5G will enable the plays to be sent and received at a speed that keeps up with the pace of the game. HC Chuck Goldstein: “We work out the same way as every other college football program, we practice the same way, we compete the same way. The difference between coaching a hearing team compared to a Deaf team is first the communication. The AT&T 5G-connected helmet will change football.” As part of their collaboration, AT&T is donating $500K to the Bison FB program and providing every student-athlete with a new helmet. The ODAC will expand its championships, bringing Men’s Volleyball online as its 26th championship in 2024-25. The league will be the 11th DIII league to sponsor MVB and plans to have seven core members competing next academic year. Commissioner Brad Bankston: “Three ODAC members have sponsored the sport for varying degrees of time, helping contribute to the growth we have witnessed in men's volleyball in our region. It was that growth and the sport's success that attracted other members of the conference to add it on their campuses.” (link)

Southern Virginia will add Beach Volleyball as its 28th varsity sport starting in 2024-25. Women’s Volleyball Assoc. HC Jon Baker will serve as the inaugural HC. AD Deidra Dryden: “Beach volleyball is one of the fastest-growing NCAA sports, and we are thrilled to be a part of it. […] Coach Baker has had a major positive impact on our university's women's and men's volleyball programs and is the right leader to take on the recruiting and coaching responsibilities for this new program.” (link)

Members of Roanoke Women’s Swimming team held a press conference Thursday to push back against a transgender student-athlete joining the team. The student-athlete ultimately withdrew the request to compete for the women’s team. Student-athlete and co-captain Lily Mullens: “When we finally worked up the guts to explain how we felt to the higher ups at our school, we were told that we had support, but not once was that support exhibited to us in practical terms.” President Frank Shushok: “In making this decision, the focus of senior administration and the board of trustees was on maintaining fairness in competition and protecting the integrity of all athletics at Roanoke College. We remain committed to supporting our LGBTQ+ community and our student-athletes, all of whom are valued members of our vibrant community.” (link, link)
