Maryland football kicks off at Ohio State today in an effort to continue its perfect start under sixth-year HC Mike Locksley & beat a top-five opponent on the road for the first time in 73 years. Locksley’s partnership with Terps AD Damon Evans is marked by both men receiving second chances in College Park as Evans remarks: “I believe in second chances. One of the great things about the United States of America is the opportunity to give second chances. To look at a person and say, ‘Did they earn it?’ There’s no doubt in my mind Coach Locksley earned it and deserved it. We all have our own failures -- I have mine I’ve had to learn from, and if you learn from mistakes and find a way to get better, that’s exactly what Locks did. I’m thrilled to be able to work with a guy at [the] place he calls his dream job. Locks is not like your typical head coach who’s standoffish; Locks embraces everything we do around here from men’s basketball to women’s basketball to lacrosse, talking to staff and showing up and being an inclusive individual. I was excited I was in a position to be able to play a part in his second second chance -- some might call it his revival.” More from FootballScoop. (link)

Brenda Tracy got an emergency restraining order on Friday afternoon to temporarily stop former Michigan State Football HC Mel Tucker and his associates from releasing more of her private text messages. Judge James S. Jamo granted her motion, ruling that Tracy had demonstrated the need for immediate action to prevent Tucker, his attorney and others from disclosing sensitive, confidential matters that could cause irreparable harm. Jamo’s order said it also appeared to the Court that “protected, personal, private, and sensitive business information related to sexual assault survivors and employees... was gathered in violation of Michigan law.” Tracy: “The actions of Mel Tucker and his legal team have put me in a position where I must protect the lives and the confidential information of third parties that have nothing to do with this case.” (link)

Gardner-Webb AD Andrew Goodrich on his use of a dossier: “On the front end of the process, the information provided by D1.dossier saved me at least 12 hours of research time. I was able to use those hours to not only prepare my interview responses, but also to continue to do my current job at a high level. Gophers HC Bob Motzko: “There's a reason [big rinks] are going away. It's a more physical game, a more offensive game on a smaller sheet. It's more fan-friendly, and you can recruit more versatile players.” (link)

The city of Winston-Salem, North Carolina will receive $35M in state funds to support economic development activities and infrastructure improvements to bolster its position as a tourism, sports and entertainment district. Specifically, per Wake Forest AD John Currie, the monies will play a major role in the revamp of Deacon Boulevard & Baity Street, which sit east of Reynolds campus. The city attracts some 750K tourists each year for a multitude of events, including Wake Forest athletic contests, and Deacs President Susan Wente says: “Wake Forest is proud to be a partner in these important commitments to the collective well-being of our community and to be one of the many reasons people come to visit and fall in love with Winston-Salem.” (link, link)

Michigan State is "moving forward" with its original plans to build a recreational pool and not a competition pool after the Battle for Spartan Swim & Dive group advocating for the programs’ reinstatement fell short of the $26.5M fundraising goal, per The Detroit News’ Tony Paul, who notes the deadline to reach that goal came and went last Sunday with advocates raising just over $5M. Battle for Spartan Swim & Dive says in a statement that “we heard from multiple potential donors that the latest news [regarding former Football HC Mel Tucker’s ouster] was dissuading them from pledging money to Michigan State.” The group adds that it will “once again outlast bad decisions and continue our efforts with even stronger resolve. We are eager to meet with the new MSU president and will continue collaborations with those university leaders who have worked with us in good faith. Our goal is now both the return of the MSU swimming and diving program as well as the construction of a new aquatic facility that serves the needs of the entire university community." (link)

Purdue AD Mike Bobinski agrees to a contract extension through June 30, 2028. President Mung Chiang: “Purdue is fortunate to have someone with the experience and vision of Mike Bobinski as our athletics director during a period of rapid and complex changes in the national scene of college athletics. Our student-athletes are champions academically and athletically because of Mike’s leadership that funnels through his administrators and coaches. He is America’s best AD, and we are glad he will continue to be a Boilermaker.” (link)

NC State Chancellor Randy Woodson wouldn’t go into detail but insists his vote wasn’t the deciding vote on ACC expansion, telling the News & Observer’s Andrew Carter: “There were 12 votes. As I’ve said, all comments about that will be through the ACC office.” Why? “Because we agreed that the ACC would be the spokesman.” Carter reportedly asked several times for clarity from Woodson, who ultimately told him: “I understand what you’re asking, but I’m not going to say anything.” (link)

JohnCanzano.com’s namesake reports the mystery president who allegedly worked with a campus professor to arrive at and push for a $50M per school per year media rights deal was Utah President Taylor Randall, who tells Canzano: “Several conference schools retained their own consultants to value the league, which resulted in a range of estimations. It is my understanding that any mention of $50M, which was higher than any valuation, was only as a potential starting point in negotiations to help get us to the estimated true value.” Randall adds further context by noting Pac-12 CEOs wanted to “take the rights to market and weren’t interested in cutting an early deal. Canzano notes that “Taylor’s account doesn’t position him as a lone voice in the room, pushing for $50M per school by himself, but rather as one of ‘many of the CEOs’ who were trying to negotiate the best deal.” In fact, one president says Commissioner George Kliavkoff and Sports Media Advisors completely misplayed the $50M counteroffer: “The instructions were to negotiate. This wasn’t supposed to be a ‘take your ball and go home’ scenario.” Meanwhile, a member of Kliavkoff’s executive team tells Canzano Randall asked if he could participate in the media rights negotiations as an observer, giving the presidents a set of eyes and ears in the room but the idea was shot down by Kliavkoff and co. Randall did not comment on that. Lots more context and on the negotiating process from Canzano. (link)

UC San Diego inks a 10-year multimedia rights partnership with JMI through June 30, 2033. Tritons AD Earl Edwards: “Just as UC San Diego has evolved into a world-class institution in one of the most desirable destinations in the world, Triton Athletics has the potential to be one of the country's elite Division I non-football programs. This partnership with JMI Sports will help provide our scholar-athletes with the resources needed to be successful in competition, in the classroom and in life." (link)

Former Northwestern Football HC Pat Fitzgerald's pay was “scheduled to be adjusted in 2024 and 2027 so that he would be no worse than the fourth-highest-paid football head coach in the Big Ten,” USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports, adding that had Fitzgerald not been let go, his salary likely would’ve jumped from $5.65M to at least $7.6M. Fitzgerald’s attorney Dan K. Webb yesterday posited that $68M “would have been the remainder of (Fitzgerald’s) contract,” which had been set to run through March 31, 2031. Another Fitzgerald attorney, Leigh A. Frederick, explains that figure includes Fitzgerald’s “remaining salary (including his scheduled raises in 2024 and 2027), retirement benefits, and bowl bonuses based on Fitzgerald’s past performance in bowl games." Big Ten COO Kerry Kenny talks with The Inside Zone’s Matt Fortuna about the league’s football scheduling process and notes the league has traditionally announced schedules 5-10 years in advance. “Then COVID came along and we found that one of the benefits of doing schedules on an annual basis was that you could be more responsive to the environment around you. And that means maybe there's coaching changes, maybe there's student-athletes that are going into the draft earlier than anticipated or they're transferring. And so doing it on an annual basis allows us to kind of create the best schedule possible based on what we know about those teams at that moment in time.” Also from Kenny: “From a Thursday perspective, Labor Day Thursday's the only Thursday that we've historically and continue as we move forward would love to play games on. From a Friday perspective, a lot of that is still in progress with our network partners of trying to figure out exactly what the cadence is going to be, which networks are available for those Fridays." Lost in the madness this week: Apple and Amazon have participated in preliminary talks about acquiring rights to the 12-team College Football Playoff, according to Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich and Michael McCarthy, who note it’s “unlikely that they’ll receive the semifinals or championship game. But the CFP’s new first round, which will include four games played on college campuses, could provide an opportunity for experimentation with streamers.” They add: “While original estimates suggested the CFP’s 12-team format could be worth $2B annually, sources are now telling FOS the number will be much lower. But bringing in multiple rights partners, like the NFL, would likely increase the CFP’s ultimate payout.” (link)

On3’s Pete Nakos reports that, per a source, the Michigan State-focused Spartan Dawgs 4 Life collective ultimately decided to cancel contracts with several student-athletes because of a shortage of funds and adds: “The timing of the decision to void the contracts comes at a critical point. In college football, players can play four games without burning their redshirt for the season. Saturday against Iowa marked the fifth game of the season. Those redshirt decisions are even more important in the transfer portal era, with an extra year of eligibility at stake.” Meanwhile, one agent says to Nakos: “I’ll tell you exactly what happened. They don’t want to pay out contracts for athletes who plan to enter the transfer portal.” A high-level MSU donor adds: “Spartans don’t do this to Spartans.” Another agent whose clients include some MSU football players calls the situation a “total dumpster fire.” Legally speaking, Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter tells Nakos: “People have been giving Spartan Dawgs 4 Life some flack for having the ability to terminate the deals, but a lot of deals will give the athletes the ability to terminate as well. Most of them say that the collective needs to send a written notice, which is that email in this situation.” (link)

Michigan Asst. Director of Esports and Intramural Sports Kevin Palmer joins Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss the launch of the Big Esports Conference, which includes all Big Ten institutions but is not officially sponsored by the B1G. The league is, however, the first at the Power 5 level to include all institutions from its athletic conference and will feature gameplay in four titles across a 16-week season. Palmer talks about the current collegiate Esports landscape, Michigan’s own setup, how game titles are chosen, the composition of the league and lots more. Palmer believes that Esports fits naturally under the athletics umbrella but notes that a place like U-M, where upwards of 200 students compete, a move to athletics would likely only involve the top two teams in each game with the rest of the competitors remaining at a club or JV level “because the management of that and the amount of resources it would take is not feasible. … The big thing, though, is the workouts and the wellness part of athletics. That’s where athletic directors can really look to incorporate – even if they don’t bring everybody in – they can still provide those resources to the rest of the program. It goes a long way for the student, both their present and their future.” Full interview on Connect. (link)

AT&T and Gallaudet (DIII) have collaborated to create the first 5G-connected football helmet that will allow coaches on the sideline to select a play from a tablet that will send the play to a lens inside the helmet. The QB will receive the play in augmented reality on the digital display located within the visor. AT&T’s 5G will enable the plays to be sent and received at a speed that keeps up with the pace of the game. Bison Football HC Chuck Goldstein: "We work out the same way as every other college football program, we practice the same way, we compete the same way. The difference between coaching a hearing team compared to a Deaf team is first the communication. The AT&T 5G-connected helmet will change football." AT&T is also donating $500K to the Bison football program. (link)
