I'm so thrilled to welcome him and his family to our Husky family because I know he has a deep commitment to student-athletes — enabling them to be champions in competition, in the classroom, and most importantly, in their lives after graduation. He's also a leader in the national conversations about the changing landscape of college sports, which as we move to the Big Ten will be invaluable to securing the long-term success of Husky Athletics.” Dannen begins his leadership on Montlake, well, tomorrow. Kansas AD Travis Goff discusses several topics with the Jayhawk Slant, including his recent letter urging fans to get on board with the football team. Goff explains the letter’s purpose was twofold: to thank the diehard fans who have suffered through some challenging years and “then without hesitation the secondary message was: ‘Let’s be more. Let’s ask more of ourselves.’ As a KU guy – I don’t want to over-lean on this – I've watched this thing before I got here just two-and-a-half years ago. I know where we've been, and I know we have not warranted full houses at that stadium. And a lot of people could argue we don't yet warrant full houses today, and I think there's a justification to be made for that. And I think people understandably want to see a continued proven trajectory, and I get that. … I think the question is: Why should we settle and why should we maybe just do what other places have done in terms of if and when XYZ occurs, then this thing sells out regularly?” Goff goes on to say he doesn’t apologize for “challenging that audience” that prefers to take a wait-and-see approach before committing to the program. Goff says over 90% of the reaction to the letter was positive, noting that within a couple days after it was sent the Jayhawks sold close to 2K tickets for yesterday’s matchup against UCF. Coaches Corner…
+ Kentucky and Baseball HC Nick Mingione have agreed to an extension that could keep him in Lexington through the 2028 season. His new deal maintains the $400K annual base salary, but “media and endorsements” will jump from $175K to $305K for the 2024 season and increase by $100K every year thereafter. Lots of incentives, including $250K for winning the College World Series. Also on the UK staff, per On3’s Derek Terry: “New recruiting coordinator Austin Cousino will earn $170,000 in 2024 and $187,000 in 2025. Nick Ammirati, who will fulfill the third full-time assistant position that was approved by the NCAA this year, will earn $40,000 from the university but will also be compensated through Kentucky’s summer camps. A source told KSR in the summer that pitching coach Dan Roszel also received a two-year extension that will pay him over $250,000 annually, but that contract has not yet been finalized by the university.” (link)
+ Wildcats AD Mitch Barnhart also extends Kentucky’s all-time winningest gymnastics HC, Tim Garrison, through the 2027 season. (link)
+ Canisius Men’s Ice Hockey HC Trevor Large agrees to a multi-year extension. Terms were not disclosed. (link)

Over the summer, the state of Missouri passed a law allowing high school athletes to begin profiting from NIL as soon as they signed with a school in the Show-Me state. Mizzou signed five-star talent Williams Nwaneri in August and another five-star player, Ryan Wingo, was in Columbia for yesterday’s game against LSU. Missouri-focused Every True Tiger Foundation collective CEO Nick Garner: “NIL’s been great – it kind of levels the playing field somewhat. And I know that’s said a lot. But I do think that it just opens conversations with potential student-athletes that maybe wasn’t there before.” While the Tigers had 23 players enter the transfer portal in the offseason, Garner says they were able to keep the core players together, “There are guys who were highly-graded by NFL scouts and had a chance to go to the next level. And we were able to keep those guys, get them to stay and form the nucleus of what’s there now. And I think that’s what kind of helps to start that process. At a place like Missouri, Alabama is going to get what they get. Georgia is going to get what they did. So I think from Mizzou’s standpoint, NIL has been helpful. Even optically, it’s helpful.” More on how NIL is fueling potential parity in the sport, per On3’s Pete Nakos. (link)

Now this is cool. At Friday’s Blue & Orange Madness, Pepperdine President Jim Gash sank a half-court shot to give a student free tuition for a year. He was immediately mobbed by members of the men’s and women’s basketball programs and high-fived the crowd. According to the school’s website, for 2023-24, tuition will be $65,990. Nice shot, Mr. President. (link)

Colorado Mesa (DII) sport management professor Sloane Milstein, Neumann (DIII) sport management professor Julie Lanzillo, and Texas Tech sport management professor Zack Damon examine what conferences take into account when adding new sports and break it down into several factors: membership-driven decisions, member influence, viability, balancing for competitive success, postseason opportunities and funding and revenue considerations. The researchers surveyed NCAA conference commissioners across all three divisions during the 2020-2021 academic year. Among the 27 participants, 10 conferences either added or had plans to add a sport between 2018 and 2024, eight did not report recent additions and seven did not respond. Overall, they find that “achieving balance, providing postseason opportunities, and securing funding and revenue are the pivotal factors that sway conference decisions when it comes to adding new sports. These factors exert a profound impact on fan engagement, recruitment efforts, institutional visibility, and the overall financial sustainability of both conferences and their member institutions.” Lots more. Maryland football kicks off at Ohio State today in an effort to continue its perfect start under sixth-year HC Mike Locksley & beat a top-five opponent on the road for the first time in 73 years. Locksley’s partnership with Terps AD Damon Evans is marked by both men receiving second chances in College Park as Evans remarks: “I believe in second chances. One of the great things about the United States of America is the opportunity to give second chances. To look at a person and say, ‘Did they earn it?’ There’s no doubt in my mind Coach Locksley earned it and deserved it. We all have our own failures -- I have mine I’ve had to learn from, and if you learn from mistakes and find a way to get better, that’s exactly what Locks did. I’m thrilled to be able to work with a guy at [the] place he calls his dream job. Locks is not like your typical head coach who’s standoffish; Locks embraces everything we do around here from men’s basketball to women’s basketball to lacrosse, talking to staff and showing up and being an inclusive individual. I was excited I was in a position to be able to play a part in his second second chance -- some might call it his revival.” More from FootballScoop. (link)

Brenda Tracy got an emergency restraining order on Friday afternoon to temporarily stop former Michigan State Football HC Mel Tucker and his associates from releasing more of her private text messages. Judge James S. Jamo granted her motion, ruling that Tracy had demonstrated the need for immediate action to prevent Tucker, his attorney and others from disclosing sensitive, confidential matters that could cause irreparable harm. Jamo’s order said it also appeared to the Court that “protected, personal, private, and sensitive business information related to sexual assault survivors and employees... was gathered in violation of Michigan law.” Tracy: “The actions of Mel Tucker and his legal team have put me in a position where I must protect the lives and the confidential information of third parties that have nothing to do with this case.” (link)

The city of Winston-Salem, North Carolina will receive $35M in state funds to support economic development activities and infrastructure improvements to bolster its position as a tourism, sports and entertainment district. The city attracts some 750K tourists each year for a multitude of events, including Wake Forest athletic contests, and Deacs President Susan Wente says: “Wake Forest is proud to be a partner in these important commitments to the collective well-being of our community and to be one of the many reasons people come to visit and fall in love with Winston-Salem.” (link, link)

Michigan State is "moving forward" with its original plans to build a recreational pool and not a competition pool after the Battle for Spartan Swim & Dive group advocating for the programs’ reinstatement fell short of the $26.5M fundraising goal, per The Detroit News’ Tony Paul, who notes the deadline to reach that goal came and went last Sunday with advocates raising just over $5M. Battle for Spartan Swim & Dive says in a statement that “we heard from multiple potential donors that the latest news [regarding former Football HC Mel Tucker’s ouster] was dissuading them from pledging money to Michigan State.” The group adds that it will “once again outlast bad decisions and continue our efforts with even stronger resolve. We are eager to meet with the new MSU president and will continue collaborations with those university leaders who have worked with us in good faith. Our goal is now both the return of the MSU swimming and diving program as well as the construction of a new aquatic facility that serves the needs of the entire university community." (link)
