West Liberty AD Lynn Ullom will retire after three-plus decades with the Hilltoppers. President Tim Borchers: "Lynn Ullom has created a strong athletic program at West Liberty, as evidenced by our recent finishes near the top of the Commissioner's Cup. I have valued Lynn's insight, perspective, and knowledge about our athletic programs during my time at West Liberty and I appreciate that he agreed to stay on in the role for a few months after I started as President." An NCAA subcommittee on NIL will meet Thursday to discuss several proposed changes, according to meeting notes obtained by ESPN’s Dan Murphy, who reports: “The notes show potential changes that would give schools the clearance to find deals for athletes, review contracts, help them with preparing taxes, and provide resources such as cameras or graphic designers for athletes to complete their end of a marketing deal. The proposed changes have not been finalized, and it's not clear if or when any new guidance would be adopted, but the changes would potentially eliminate some of the uncertainty about how much athletic departments can help athletes seen in the first two-plus years of college sports' NIL era.” Nebraska (DI) AD Trev Alberts, a member of the subcommittee, tells Murphy: “Let's be honest. Some of the stuff we're talking about now, we would have never even had a conversation about two years ago. … I'm hoping we're aggressive. I'm a proponent of radically thinking differently about institutional involvement here." (link)

West Georgia President Brendan Kelly explains to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy why now was the right time to transition from DII to DI: “The circumstances changed. And that’s not just the circumstances in collegiate athletics. It’s circumstances at UWG, in higher education in America. Expectations changed — students’ expectations changed. When you take all of those factors together and kind of how we operate with every decision, every day, something that seemed like a good idea a few years ago or wasn’t feasible a few years ago, all of a sudden, it makes more sense and it is [feasible].” UWG held conversations with several DI conferences before zeroing in on the Atlantic Sun (DI) (and UAC (DI) for football), and from the UAC’s perspective, Executive Director Oliver Luck tells Portnoy: “A school like West Georgia, you look at all the measurements, if you will. It’s been a solid program since it started — four out of the last five years in the D-II playoffs, solid record over the last five years, good attendance, a great recruiting area and it’s in a state that we don’t have a footprint in.” UWG’s move to the ASUN will officially go into effect on July 1, 2024. The Wolves owe the Gulf South a $110K exit fee and the ASUN a $200K entrance fee. The department also will add men’s indoor and outdoor track and field (2024), women’s beach volleyball (2025) and women’s stunt (2025) as part of its move. (link)

The Lincoln Journal Star’s Just follows up on the impact of Volleyball Day in Nebraska, from which Nebraska Kearney and Wayne State (NE) each received a $50K payout from host school Nebraska (DI). UNK HC Rick Squires: “None of us ever has enough money. Most of us are trying to keep our heads above water. That’s why we were so grateful to be included. Not only did we get the experience, but that’s a really nice gesture on their part. Financially, it really helps us operate.” One week later, UNK reclaimed the DII single-game attendance record, while Google searches for the pair of volleyball programs reached their second-highest volume of all time in August. Allen Football, revived in 2018 with a 64-yard, one-goalpost practice field and windowless coach’s office, gets the profile treatment from the Post & Courier’s Sapakoff following a 5-1 start to the season and announcement of plans for a new stadium. President Dr. Ernest C. McNealey: “The extraordinary experience the university affords its students and the continued success of the football program are linked and will allow all that can be imagined to be achieved.” HC Teddy Keaton: “We don’t worry about the labor pains, we’re just trying to have the baby. The university and the president set out a vision and a timeline. We knew this wasn’t going to be easy, but the whole university is playing a role in this. We’re well on our way.” (link)

Flag football will be included in the 2028 Summer Olympics along with cricket, baseball and softball. Lacrosse and “potentially squash” could also be added. Barnett: “While it remains to be seen if flag football will catch on as a full-fledged Olympic sport (the 2032 Olympics are set for Brisbane, Australia), that's almost beside the point. … Monday's news will allow the NFL and USA Football to continue to push for other states and colleges to add men's and women's flag football as full-fledged varsity sports over the next five years.” (link)

The federal government is overhauling the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form as part of a project known as FAFSA Simplification, delaying this year’s opening from October 1 to sometime in December, and Inside Higher Ed’s Katherine Knott and Liam Knox note financial aid administrators, admissions officers and high school counselors are preparing for a chaotic rollout. James Madison (DI) Financial Aid Director/AVP for Access and Enrollment Management Brad Barnett: “We’ve got a plan in place. The question is, will the plan be accurate? This is where we’re going to have to be nimble as an institution. It could cost us more or less than what we’re anticipating based on what actually happens.” Knott and Knox point out that if students’ financial aid goes up, colleges and universities may have to increase institutional aid, “and if it goes down, they may need to use their own funds to make up the difference – especially for current students, who will be immediately affected by the new calculations.” Barnett adds that right now there’s not much else administrators can do: “At this stage of the game, we’re as prepared as we can be until we see the full application and what it actually looks like and how it actually works.” (link)
