Tennessee AD Danny White provides an update on several facilities renovations, particularly to Baseball’s Lindsey Nelson Stadium: “We’ve got tractors on top of each other with the construction ongoing with the expansion of our football building, the Anderson (Training) Center, and then Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The infrastructure for everything that’ll go down the third-base line, our expectation is that’ll be in place for this upcoming season. And then what you see in terms of construction on the first-base line is we’re adding a few rows of club seats to get even closer to the field. … We’re already so intimate in terms of how close our fans are to the field. We want to double down on that and make it even closer, so going down the first- and the third-base lines, we’re going to add some rows — some nice club seats — to bring fans even closer to the action.” White also says he was told from the marketing ticket sales staff that the Vols will sell out every football game this season. “All we have to play with game to game — because we sold out of season tickets — we have the visiting team allotment, which is 5,000. And then we held back just a small number of tickets — about 1,500 — to use for things like parents’ weekend and stuff like that, so there’s not a lot of inventory to move for any individual game.” (link)

Minnesota AD Mark Coyle covers several topics with KARE 11, including the Gophers’ approach to NIL. Coyle explains: “We’ve been very cautious. There has not been much guidance on the national level and so it's kind of been up to each institution. … We're getting more creative with more revenue opportunities for our student-athletes as this thing matures, so again we haven't run a sprint, we've been very cautious, but I think we'll win the race in the long haul because we've done it the right way.” Coyle goes on to say that “I'm so grateful for coaches because we've not made false promises. We’ve been very honest with people saying, ‘Hey, when you come to Minnesota we have a collective called Dinkytown Athletes. You can work with that collective and you'll have those opportunities, but I do think President Baker has a tall task at hand. We have to get some sort of national solution. That's the only way we're going to get our arms around this because it's not supposed to be used for recruiting, but it’s being used for recruiting.” More from Coyle. (link)

Austin Peay AD Gerald Harrison sits down with AthleticDirectorU’s Tai M. Brown for a conversation about mentorship, resource allocation and the art of challenging expectations. Harrison also breaks down the tension between upholding tradition and resetting competitive standards, including the impact of stakeholder sentiment and institutional priorities. Harrison and Brown also discuss the concept of a work identity, with Harrison quoting former Tennessee AD/FB HC Phil Fulmer in saying: “You can fall in love with the building but the building can’t love you back.” Harrison on career development. “The first thing I tell our staff is take an [inventory] of who you are, and I think what's one thing that's missing. People come to these conventions and they meet these gargantuan ADs…and your focus becomes laser-focused on ‘I'm going to be those people instead of who I am.’ But what’s important to me may not be the same as those folks. … We’re going to take everything that we have and all of our resources and pour into our folks but create the expectation that we can be the premiere mid-major program in the country.” Full Q&A. Loyola Marymount AD Craig Pintens plays Athletic Director Simulator 3000 with game designer and Extra Points publisher Matt Brown, with Pintens explaining why he made certain decisions, and the two discussing what was realistic or not. The playthrough covered mentoring and managing coaches, improving game day revenue, donor relations, angry parents, and more. How did he do? Well… let's just say Pintens is better at being an AD than playing computer games. (link)

Kennesaw State and Fifth Third Bank have announced the extension of their sponsorship agreement through June 30, 2030, with an additional three-year option to renew. Fifth Third's increased investment in the partnership could approach $15M and includes providing $5M of its total investment towards Kennesaw’s Athletics' Capital Campaign. In addition to serving as the official bank of KSU athletics, the partnership includes a continuation of naming rights to the university's stadium, which will be changed from Fifth Third Bank Stadium to Fifth Third Stadium in alignment with Fifth Third’s brand evolution. More Kennesaw State as the Owls have officially launched the public phase of The Campaign for Kennesaw State, which embodies all 11 colleges, Student Affairs, KSU Athletics and University research initiatives. The initial campaign goal of $125M has been raised to $200M “following the overwhelming success of the private phase.” During the private phase, which began in 2019, the university raised nearly $120M. The Louisville-focused 502Circle raised over $50K during the first timeout of the second quarter against Notre Dame on Saturday night in a “Flash Give.” Fans were prompted to donate through in-venue QR codes and signage. A statement from the Cardinals’ athletic department reads, in part: “A lot of schools and collectives are striving every day to get the type of cooperation we have. The collective recently signing an official partnership with LEARFIELD opens up a whole new world of possibilities of ways we can collaborate to help support our student-athletes through NIL. It’s not just about rights to marks and logos – it’s about integrating 502Circle into the Louisville experience.” (link)

Arizona State had a sellout crowd on hand for the Sun Devils’ matchup against Colorado, and Sun Devils AD Ray Anderson says: “Colorado has never produced, to my knowledge, a sellout in this stadium in the time I’ve been here. What does that tell you? That tells you that everybody wins because we’ll sell more concessions. We’ll sell more hot dogs, we’ll sell more water, we’ll sell more beer. There’ll be more people paying for parking. That’s good for everybody. That’s community impact that we realize is important. You got to give Deion credit.” Anderson also says he has no problem with celebrities attending games on the Buffs’ sideline: “Hey, if those are his friends and supporters of his programs, he’s got a right to have them down there. If people are offended because they think it’s a recruiting advantage because you have a well-known rapper who is a good friend of Deion who wants to come down and visit the sidelines, that’s just the way of the world. Too bad. Go get your stars and entertainers. People do it all the time. They have high-profile alums who are Pro Bowl players who were down on their sidelines. They’ve been doing it for years. Crying about Deion and his rapper friends is disingenuous, in my opinion.” (link)

Colorado Football HC Deion Sanders is the focus of a new Time cover story by Sean Gregory, who notes CU’s online team store merchandise sales are up 892% year-to-date over 2022. Meanwhile, according to CU Chancellor Phil DiStefano, out-of-state applications have climbed 40%. Sanders: “People are drawn to hope, man. Shoot, we’re David. We ain’t got but a couple of stones here. We’re playing against Goliath every week. We were 1-11, and now you’re tripping about us? We’re pulling people in, man, that just want a chance to be seen, to be heard, to be noticed, to be recognized.” Sanders also says the changing landscape means student-athletes have to grow up more quickly: “They want to be treated like pros, but you’ve got to understand, now there’s scrutiny like the pros. There’s cuts. There’s dissatisfaction. So you can’t have a pity party and want it both ways. ‘Well, I’m still a kid.’ No, no. You’ve got a Benz parked outside.” Full profile. (link)

The federal government is overhauling the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form as part of a project known as FAFSA Simplification, delaying this year’s opening from October 1 to sometime in December, and Inside Higher Ed’s Katherine Knott and Liam Knox note financial aid administrators, admissions officers and high school counselors are preparing for a chaotic rollout. James Madison Financial Aid Director/AVP for Access and Enrollment Management Brad Barnett: “We’ve got a plan in place. The question is, will the plan be accurate? This is where we’re going to have to be nimble as an institution. It could cost us more or less than what we’re anticipating based on what actually happens.” Knott and Knox point out that if students’ financial aid goes up, colleges and universities may have to increase institutional aid, “and if it goes down, they may need to use their own funds to make up the difference – especially for current students, who will be immediately affected by the new calculations.” Barnett adds that right now there’s not much else administrators can do: “At this stage of the game, we’re as prepared as we can be until we see the full application and what it actually looks like and how it actually works.” (link)

The NWSL has reached agreements on its next round of media deals and will split rights between ESPN, CBS, Amazon and Scripps, according to Sportico’s Scott Soshnick and Eben Novy-Williams, who report the deals run for four years, allowing the league to go back to market directly after the 2027 World Cup. They add: “It’s unclear exactly how much the agreements are worth. The NWSL’s current CBS deal pays about $1.5M per year, but it requires that the league foot the bill for game production, which is an eight-figure annual expense. These deals are significantly higher than 10x that topline CBS fee, according to sources. That also would put it well about the reported annual haul for the Women’s Super League in Europe.” (link)

Washington has hired Tulane AD Troy Dannen as its new AD. UW President Ana Mari Cauce: “Troy is committed to excellence across all sports, as well as the success of our students off the field. I'm so thrilled to welcome him and his family to our Husky family because I know he has a deep commitment to student-athletes — enabling them to be champions in competition, in the classroom, and most importantly, in their lives after graduation. He's also a leader in the national conversations about the changing landscape of college sports, which as we move to the Big Ten will be invaluable to securing the long-term success of Husky Athletics.” Dannen begins his leadership on Montlake, well, tomorrow. CollegeAD has contract details for Purdue AD Mike Bobinski’s extension: Base pay bump from $850K to $975K for the next three years, then $1.025M in 2027 & $1.075M in 2028. $250K in deferred compensation in 2024, which will increase by $50K annually until a max of $450K. Retention bonuses of $250K in July of 2026 & July of 2028. There’s also an opportunity to earn $200K in annual incentives. (link)

Kansas AD Travis Goff discusses several topics with the Jayhawk Slant, including his recent letter urging fans to get on board with the football team. Goff explains the letter’s purpose was twofold: to thank the diehard fans who have suffered through some challenging years and “then without hesitation the secondary message was: ‘Let’s be more. Let’s ask more of ourselves.’ As a KU guy – I don’t want to over-lean on this – I've watched this thing before I got here just two-and-a-half years ago. I know where we've been, and I know we have not warranted full houses at that stadium. And a lot of people could argue we don't yet warrant full houses today, and I think there's a justification to be made for that. And I think people understandably want to see a continued proven trajectory, and I get that. … I think the question is: Why should we settle and why should we maybe just do what other places have done in terms of if and when XYZ occurs, then this thing sells out regularly?” Goff goes on to say he doesn’t apologize for “challenging that audience” that prefers to take a wait-and-see approach before committing to the program. Goff says over 90% of the reaction to the letter was positive, noting that within a couple days after it was sent the Jayhawks sold close to 2K tickets for yesterday’s matchup against UCF. Coaches Corner…
+ Kentucky and Baseball HC Nick Mingione have agreed to an extension that could keep him in Lexington through the 2028 season. His new deal maintains the $400K annual base salary, but “media and endorsements” will jump from $175K to $305K for the 2024 season and increase by $100K every year thereafter. Lots of incentives, including $250K for winning the College World Series. Also on the UK staff, per On3’s Derek Terry: “New recruiting coordinator Austin Cousino will earn $170,000 in 2024 and $187,000 in 2025. Nick Ammirati, who will fulfill the third full-time assistant position that was approved by the NCAA this year, will earn $40,000 from the university but will also be compensated through Kentucky’s summer camps. A source told KSR in the summer that pitching coach Dan Roszel also received a two-year extension that will pay him over $250,000 annually, but that contract has not yet been finalized by the university.” (link)
+ Wildcats AD Mitch Barnhart also extends Kentucky’s all-time winningest gymnastics HC, Tim Garrison, through the 2027 season. (link)

Over the summer, the state of Missouri passed a law allowing high school athletes to begin profiting from NIL as soon as they signed with a school in the Show-Me state. Mizzou signed five-star talent Williams Nwaneri in August and another five-star player, Ryan Wingo, was in Columbia for yesterday’s game against LSU. Missouri-focused Every True Tiger Foundation collective CEO Nick Garner: “NIL’s been great – it kind of levels the playing field somewhat. And I know that’s said a lot. But I do think that it just opens conversations with potential student-athletes that maybe wasn’t there before.” While the Tigers had 23 players enter the transfer portal in the offseason, Garner says they were able to keep the core players together, “There are guys who were highly-graded by NFL scouts and had a chance to go to the next level. And we were able to keep those guys, get them to stay and form the nucleus of what’s there now. And I think that’s what kind of helps to start that process. At a place like Missouri, Alabama is going to get what they get. Georgia is going to get what they did. So I think from Mizzou’s standpoint, NIL has been helpful. Even optically, it’s helpful.” More on how NIL is fueling potential parity in the sport, per On3’s Pete Nakos. (link)

Now this is cool. At Friday’s Blue & Orange Madness, Pepperdine President Jim Gash sank a half-court shot to give a student free tuition for a year. He was immediately mobbed by members of the men’s and women’s basketball programs and high-fived the crowd. According to the school’s website, for 2023-24, tuition will be $65,990. Nice shot, Mr. President. (link)

Colorado Mesa (DII) sport management professor Sloane Milstein, Neumann (DIII) sport management professor Julie Lanzillo, and Texas Tech sport management professor Zack Damon examine what conferences take into account when adding new sports and break it down into several factors: membership-driven decisions, member influence, viability, balancing for competitive success, postseason opportunities and funding and revenue considerations. The researchers surveyed NCAA conference commissioners across all three divisions during the 2020-2021 academic year. Among the 27 participants, 10 conferences either added or had plans to add a sport between 2018 and 2024, eight did not report recent additions and seven did not respond. Overall, they find that “achieving balance, providing postseason opportunities, and securing funding and revenue are the pivotal factors that sway conference decisions when it comes to adding new sports. These factors exert a profound impact on fan engagement, recruitment efforts, institutional visibility, and the overall financial sustainability of both conferences and their member institutions.” Lots more.
