Ferrum elevates Football HC and alum Cleive Adams to AD. An NCAA subcommittee on NIL will meet Thursday to discuss several proposed changes, according to meeting notes obtained by ESPN’s Dan Murphy, who reports: “The notes show potential changes that would give schools the clearance to find deals for athletes, review contracts, help them with preparing taxes, and provide resources such as cameras or graphic designers for athletes to complete their end of a marketing deal. The proposed changes have not been finalized, and it's not clear if or when any new guidance would be adopted, but the changes would potentially eliminate some of the uncertainty about how much athletic departments can help athletes seen in the first two-plus years of college sports' NIL era.” Nebraska (DI) AD Trev Alberts, a member of the subcommittee, tells Murphy: “Let's be honest. Some of the stuff we're talking about now, we would have never even had a conversation about two years ago. … I'm hoping we're aggressive. I'm a proponent of radically thinking differently about institutional involvement here." (link)

Wisconsin-Platteville AD Kristina Navarro joins D3.ticker/Connect’s Kristen Eargle from the 2023 NACDA Convention to outline some of the highlights from this past academic year, dive into some of the challenges that are facing DIII, sport sponsorship, nationwide trends and more. Navarro on the pressure to add sports: “At the campus level, you have to think about enrollment and enrollment comes with butts in seats. Guaranteed butts in seats are student-athletes, and so we talk a lot about across the conference we need six teams to have a sport sponsorship and not be an affiliate of a different conference, so we're excited to look to add men's soccer in the next couple of years. As an institution, we're looking at different things within our Title IX areas that we can grow. We need to be heavier on our women's enrollment side so we're continuing to explore different things.” Check out the full interview on Connect. (link)

Wisconsin-Whitewater broke its own DIII record for Football attendance on a college campus with 20,113 fans in attendance for the Warhawks’ game against Wisconsin-La Crosse. (link)

A trio of professors at Centre lead a team of a dozen students that provide analytics for the Colonels coaches. In one instance, a pair of students ran expected points data that Football HC Andy Frye uses to help determine play-calling. Professor Jeff Heath explains that he “thought it’d be a great way to have that connection between academics and athletics. [...] It’s very unique in Division III. I’d say we are definitely one of — at most — a small handful of schools doing this level of analysis for our athletic programs.” (link)

Flag football will be included in the 2028 Summer Olympics along with cricket, baseball and softball. Lacrosse and “potentially squash” could also be added. Barnett: “While it remains to be seen if flag football will catch on as a full-fledged Olympic sport (the 2032 Olympics are set for Brisbane, Australia), that's almost beside the point. … Monday's news will allow the NFL and USA Football to continue to push for other states and colleges to add men's and women's flag football as full-fledged varsity sports over the next five years.” (link)

The federal government is overhauling the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form as part of a project known as FAFSA Simplification, delaying this year’s opening from October 1 to sometime in December, and Inside Higher Ed’s Katherine Knott and Liam Knox note financial aid administrators, admissions officers and high school counselors are preparing for a chaotic rollout. James Madison (DI) Financial Aid Director/AVP for Access and Enrollment Management Brad Barnett: “We’ve got a plan in place. The question is, will the plan be accurate? This is where we’re going to have to be nimble as an institution. It could cost us more or less than what we’re anticipating based on what actually happens.” Knott and Knox point out that if students’ financial aid goes up, colleges and universities may have to increase institutional aid, “and if it goes down, they may need to use their own funds to make up the difference – especially for current students, who will be immediately affected by the new calculations.” Barnett adds that right now there’s not much else administrators can do: “At this stage of the game, we’re as prepared as we can be until we see the full application and what it actually looks like and how it actually works.” (link)
