Lake Superior State selects Youngstown State (DI) Deputy AD for Performance Excellence Tory Lindley as its new AD, starting November 1. LSSU Interim President Lynn Gillette: “He was overwhelmingly the top candidate in a very strong candidate pool. He is committed to providing our athletes and coaches the tools they need to win. He also has vast experience at supporting each student-athlete holistically to foster overall well-being, academic achievement, and leadership development.” (link)

NCAA President Charlie Baker tells the Women Leaders National Convention audience in New Orleans the association is committed to growing participation & fandom in women's sports, and points to a couple of key initiatives: Building a nationwide database of fans and launching a local sponsorship program for individual championships. (link); Baker is scheduled to appear at a U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee hearing titled “Name, Image, and Likeness, and the Future of College Sports,” on October 17, per USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz. The announcement notes this hearing “will examine different federal NIL legislative proposals and seek to establish what is truly in the best interests of students participating in college athletics." Berkowitz points out the committee, which is “thought to be committee of jurisdiction” on this topic, includes U.S. Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Cory Booker (D-NJ). (link)

As Jamestown (NAIA) explores a move to DII and the NSIC, the Jimmies have been voted out of their league, effective at the end of the academic year. UJ President Polly Peterson: “... we have anticipated the potential of this outcome. Consequently, we have been discussing alternative opportunities as we prepare for a potential move to the NCAA.” (link)

The NCAA has launched its first e-learning module dedicated to sports gambling, its harms and the risks it poses to the integrity of their games. The module also covers social media harassment and NCAA rules. NCAA President Charlie Baker: "One of the first things I did when I took over as NCAA president was gather as much information as possible about sports betting on college campuses. This educational resource is directly informed by that data. We believe this new program will help protect student-athletes from the risks that come with sports wagering. The data is clear that athletes with firsthand experiences connect with current student-athletes better than any other material we could develop, so we are incredibly grateful for their participation in this effort." A sustained rise in long-term U.S. Treasury yields “could be bringing the Federal Reserve’s historic rate hiking cycle to an anticlimactic end,” writes the Wall Street Journal’s Nick Timiraos, who explains: “Top central bank officials have signaled in recent days that they could be done raising short-term interest rates if long-term rates remain near their recent highs and inflation continues to cool. … If the run-up in the 10-year Treasury yields to their highest levels since 2007 persists, those increases could substitute for additional rises in the fed-funds rate.” Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan: “If long-term interest rates remain elevated because of higher term premiums, there may be less need to raise the fed-funds rate.” (link)
