Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff would be owed around $10M if he was let go, per The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner, who points out that “nobody wants to pay something for nothing and toss that cash in the trash. So he remains in place due to inertia, essentially.” In the event the Pac-2 does need a conference structure, if they decide to go it alone next season, Wilner contends Pac-12 Deputy Commissioner Teresa Gould is the “obvious candidate.” However, it “seems unlikely that Gould would be the commissioner of a fully rebuilt Pac-12,” as Wilner notes the most likely scenario there would involve the addition of some or all of the Mountain West schools, in which case MWC Commissioner Gloria Nevarez would lead the league. As far as the league’s cash reserves, Wilner notes that at the end of FY22, the Pac-12 had $42.7M in net assets, including the reserves “but we don’t know the percentage. What we do know, according to multiple sources, is that the presidents approved the use of reserves to offset the revenue lost in the Comcast overpayment debacle. As a result, the emergency cash has been exhausted.” (link)

AAC Commissioner Mike Aresco covers an array of topics with The Messenger’s Javon Edmonds, including the status of talks with Army West Point, about which Aresco explains: “We are talking to Army. I don't know what the outcome is ultimately going to be, but it should get wrapped up relatively soon. Probably over the next few weeks because you're getting to the point where you need to really start worrying about your schedules for next year.” Aresco also says he doesn’t trust Congress “to not try to control college sports. And I don't think it's a good idea to have Congress making a rule, I think we need to make them for ourselves. What I really think we need is antitrust protection for what we do, give us some leeway on antitrust protection. … I don't want much more because then, next thing you know, they'll tell you how you have to share revenue, how you have to do this, whether student-athletes ultimately are employees and all the things we don't want because employee status is not good for kids.” Aresco goes on to tell Edmonds too much is being sacrificed in the name of money when it comes to conference realignment. “I think it just shows you how desperate these schools are to be in a so-called P5 conference. It’s all about branding. It's all about being at what they consider the top level. We play at the highest level, we always have. We think we've been a P6.” More from Aresco. (link)

College football is enjoying record viewership and interest, and The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel contends that can be attributed in large part to NIL and the transfer portal. Industry leaders’ complaints notwithstanding, Mandel observes: “USC went from 4-8 one year to the cusp of a College Football Playoff berth the next, thanks in large part to a transcendent quarterback, Caleb Williams, who was able to transfer from Oklahoma and play right away in 2022. That would not have been possible before the NCAA’s one-time transfer exception went into effect in 2021. One-time power Florida State, which had cratered to four straight losing seasons from 2018-2021, is back in the national title mix this season thanks to a roster coach Mike Norvell upgraded primarily via the portal. Texas is (almost) back, led by a quarterback, Quinn Ewers, who transferred after just one season at Ohio State and started the next. And just as the vaunted SEC has shown cracks for the first time in ages, the downtrodden (and soon to be extinct) Pac-12 is having its most exciting season in a decade, thanks in large part to transfer QBs like Williams, Oregon’s Bo Nix and Washington’s Michael Penix Jr. … Critics that bemoan the ‘professionalization’ of college football often cite how the portal has spawned NFL-like free agency. The thing is…free agency is kinda fun.” More from Mandel. (link)

Big Ten men’s hoops HCs sounded off on transfer portal chicanery during Big Ten Media Day, with Wisconsin HC Greg Gard remarking: “There were some mischievous acts going on, so to speak, I will say.” Iowa HC Fran McCaffery adds: “Really disappointed in that. For six years, I was part of the NCAA’s ethics coalition. There’s nothing being done about it. You look at how the rules are set up, it’s disgraceful. This is not what NIL was supposed to be. NIL was inevitable. It should have come into play many years ago. We should have been doing it for a long time, but we didn’t. Now, there are basically no rules. No one should be talking to guys while they’re playing for other teams, but that’s what’s going on.” The coaches even met about the topic over the summer, and Northwestern HC Chris Collins called hearing rumors about players leaving the program “disturbing,” adding: “A lot of the times, it’s not head coaches. It could be support staff. We really challenged each other in our meeting to let’s not be a league that does that. … If you feel like an assistant or something on your staff is going there, let’s cut it out because it’s ruining relationships.” (link)

Compared to the first four home games last year, the Sodexo Live! venue at Michigan Stadium has experienced increases in total transactions (13.6%), revenue (11%), per-cap spending (4%) and transactions per guest (6.4%). Sodexo GM for Michigan Stadium Michael Jordan attributes the increases to simpler menus, better traffic flows on concourses and in grab-and-go markets, and faster and more points-of-sale. “When there are 100K people, you can’t play catch-up. You have to be ready for them.” Despite the Big House being nearly 100 years old, its concourses are wide enough to accommodate the heavy foot traffic, and SBJ’s Bret McCormick notes that “on the south end of the concourse, Jordan and company used the extra space to park six shipping container kitchens – manufactured by a company called Event Kitchens – to increase capacity at the venue that has just six permanent kitchens.” Sales of chicken tenders are up 8.7% (20K servings sold), while hot dogs have seen a 7.6% lift thus far with more than 30K sold. Former Fox Sports President Bob Thompson answers the following question from a Twitter user: The CW is averaging approximately 394K viewers for ACC games. Biggest audience came when Cincinnati played Pittsburgh. NC State has appeared on the network twice averaging 295k per appearance. Do you know if the CW is producing the games or is ESPN selling them to CW? Thompson: “ESPN sold games to Raycom who had cleared them various RSNs. Due to DSG bankruptcy Raycom took the games back and sold them to CW. Raycom has always produced.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown wonders which Big Ten teams will play Friday night football games after The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman this week noted Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Iowa have logistical challenges that prevent them from doing so. Both OSU and PSU attribute their inability to play Friday games largely to traffic and parking concerns due to Friday classes. Brown: “Based on the wording in The Athletic article, my assumption here is that the current TV deal recognizes these logistical realities, and will not force those four schools to host Friday games. If that’s the case, I’d be a little surprised if USC and UCLA ended up hosting Friday games very often as well,” which means that Friday games are “likely to disproportionately feature programs like Purdue, Illinois, or Indiana. Maybe those schools are okay with that arrangement since it’s more difficult for those programs to get the same national TV spotlight on Saturdays…but I’m sure their fans (and coaches) would also prefer to be watching HS football on Fridays.” If the TV contracts don’t include clauses acknowledging certain schools are exempt from Friday games, Brown observes that “we could potentially be in for a fascinating showdown at some point between a Big Ten blueblood and a television partner. Forcing a school to play in timeslots that they deeply want to avoid is not a great way to build goodwill and stability, after all. Just ask Oklahoma fans.” (link)

Jury selection is underway in the Title IX/negligence lawsuit against Baylor, former Bears Football HC Art Briles and former AD Ian McCaw. Testimony is scheduled to start Monday.” (link)
