ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy on league expansion: “Our job as the conference was to provide options to the membership and to our board of directors, etc. — and that’s what we did throughout. We had an agreement and the ACC wanted to do this, but it wasn’t the only option that we considered over a period of time. And then when you look into the future, I just believe you have to be on the offensive side. You have to be aggressive in how you lead and manage. [This] fits nicely where this latest round of expansion has occurred with us having 18 schools, the Big Ten at 18, the SEC at 16 and the Big 12 with 16.” Phillips goes on to say he believes the ACC can stay together in its coming form because he & his team will continue to listen, pay attention and serve its members. On the idea of using Dallas as a central hub for competition in the coming years: “I think you’d be silly not to look at all options when you expand like this. I don’t ever believe you commit immediately to doing it exactly this way or not. I think you have to have some conversations. You have to do some research and have some additional information. But it certainly sits well when you think about that market and you think about what we potentially could do on the West Coast, as well.” More from Phillips & Portnoy. (link)

USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz has a list of leaders who are already cashing in on bowl eligibility. Notably, Oregon State AD Scott Barnes is also on the board with a $20K bump thanks to the Beavers win over UCLA yesterday. (link)

More from SBJ’s profile of former Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby, who has been named a 2023 Champion. Bowlsby recalls first hearing the news that Texas and Oklahoma would leave for the SEC, and SBJ’s Bill King notes: “After confirming the report, Bowlsby’s next calls were to the presidents and athletic directors of both schools. When none of the four answered or returned his calls or texts, he knew what he faced.” Bowlsby adds: “Nobody is going to want to admit that they’re coveting anybody else’s members. But the fact is, if somebody takes mine, I gotta be prepared. I can’t say I honestly had a shortlist. But the process in ’16 helped a lot.” On the buildup to the current state of NIL: “We got close to the [more progressive] end of the continuum. But we could not get the NCAA to put it in place. And the reason we couldn’t is because Mark Emmert and their legal team believed we were going to get sued. They were right. We were going to get sued. But at least we would have articulated an architecture that was based upon principles that would give us some structure. And it also would have informed state governments as to where they could and couldn’t go without challenge. It was a colossal mistake in my estimation. … And when we went to Congress, we would have been able to say: ‘This is what we think it ought to look like.’ We completely ignored our responsibilities to the members when we chose not to put anything out there.” ((link)

The D1.dossier for the AD opening at Little Rock is ready for those of you interested in leading the Trojans. North Alabama AD Josh Looney on his use of a dossier: “It was a wonderful tool to provide a ‘first look’ behind the curtain at the University, particularly beyond Athletics. It really helped me better understand the ‘voice’ on campus behind the numbers that I was able to pull. I also found great value in your log of presidential communication and archive of news narratives.” Up next: Tulane. (link)

Radford is the latest athletic department to ink with Collegiate Sports Connect to take advantage of its Talent Finder solution. Highlanders AD Robert Lineburg: “Radford University Athletics is excited to partner with Connect and their innovative platform to help us identify and recruit new talent. In such a competitive landscape, Radford can now be proactive and intentional in our search process of identifying individuals who best align with who we are.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown examines what happens to Corvallis in a post-Pac-12 world, and City Manager Mark Shepard tells him: “Oregon State is easily the biggest employer in the city. We have a regional hospital system here, and Hewlett-Packard has a presence, but OSU is the big dog. They drive our economy, from housing, to consumer spending, to tourism.” Brown notes the city imposes a 9% tax on hotels and other tourist lodgings. The city keeps 70% of that tax revenue and uses the other 30% to fund the Visit Corvallis non-profit, which is designed to market Corvallis and Benton County as a whole. The city brought in $1.26M in lodging tax revenue during 2022 and projects that figure to increase to $2.2M in 2023 and $2.25M in 2025; however, those estimates were made prior to the Pac-12’s demise. While whatever hit the economy takes post-Pac-12 is unlikely to plunge the city into an economic freefall, Shepard points out that if there is “significant revenue loss, we’d likely either need to cut back on services, or increase fees elsewhere to make up the difference.” Meanwhile, if OSU needs to cut jobs as a result of declining revenues, local consumer spending could be impacted, and Brown explains there’s “also the potential for a harder-to-quantify impact on community branding and psyche since Oregon State represents such an outsized influence on community life.” (link)

West Georgia President Brendan Kelly explains to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy why now was the right time to transition from DII to DI: “The circumstances changed. And that’s not just the circumstances in collegiate athletics. It’s circumstances at UWG, in higher education in America. Expectations changed — students’ expectations changed. When you take all of those factors together and kind of how we operate with every decision, every day, something that seemed like a good idea a few years ago or wasn’t feasible a few years ago, all of a sudden, it makes more sense and it is [feasible].” UWG held conversations with several DI conferences before zeroing in on the Atlantic Sun (and UAC for football), and from the UAC’s perspective, Executive Director Oliver Luck tells Portnoy: “A school like West Georgia, you look at all the measurements, if you will. It’s been a solid program since it started — four out of the last five years in the D-II playoffs, solid record over the last five years, good attendance, a great recruiting area and it’s in a state that we don’t have a footprint in.” UWG’s move to the ASUN will officially go into effect on July 1, 2024. The Wolves owe the Gulf South a $110K exit fee and the ASUN a $200K entrance fee. The department also will add men’s indoor and outdoor track and field (2024), women’s beach volleyball (2025) and women’s stunt (2025) as part of its move. (link)

The greens have been redesigned and recontoured and are planted with Tif-Eagle Bermuda with a three-foot band around them of Tahoma 31 Bermuda. The tees, fairways and rough are 419 Bermuda and all areas have been sprigged with new turf. The bunkers have been lined with the state-of-the-art Bunker Solutions method and trees and underbrush in some areas have been cleared out to improve air flow and sunlight. (link)

Weldon, Williams & Lick, which for 125 years has been the been the market leader in printing sports tickets for major events, is reassessing its business model in an increasingly digital marketplace, and WW&L CRO Evan Gitomer tells On3’s Eric Prisbell souvenir tickets continue to be popular. “When you think about things like college football or college basketball, the fandom and that connection is really second to none. People still want that memento.” WW&L’s current clients in the burgeoning souvenir ticketing space include nine MLB teams, the New Orleans Saints, the NCAA, the Rose Bowl, Alabama and Colorado. Prisbell distinguishes between souvenir tickets, which anyone can buy, and commemorative tickets, which are unique and indicate the holder was in a particular seat for a particular event. “WW&L says its commemorative tickets are a new value proposition slowly being adopted by several MLB postseason teams and are being considered for conference games at several colleges.” Souvenir and commemorative tickets now represent about 5% of the company’s business, and the company projects that figure to climb to 10-12% in the next three to four years. The Coalition for the Registration of Exercise Professionals (CREP), the Intercollegiate Council on Sport Medicine (ICSM) and the U.S. Council for Athletes Health (USCAH) have collaborated to create ATHLETEALIVE2025, a student-athlete safety initiative intended to reduce the prevalence of preventable student-athlete injuries and deaths associated with conditioning and training; inclusive of proper emergency management. The initiative reflects requirements associated with the NCAA Inter-association Recommendations Preventing Catastrophic Injury and Death in Collegiate Athletes. The goal is to reach full compliance by all collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches by January 1, 2025. (link)

Big Chair Developments…
+ Eastern Kentucky AD Matt Roan agrees to an extension that could keep him in Richmond through 2027. (link)
+ CollegeAD also reports Texas Southern AD Kevin Granger is set to receive a three-year extension that would take his base pay from $230K annually to $250K. The Texas Southern Board of Regents still has to approve. (link) + You’ve never seen an AD wear a jacket like Colorado boss Rick George last night. Washington Board of Regents Chair David Zeeck gives Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger a behind-the-scenes look at how the Huskies & Oregon ended up in the Big Ten: “It was both of us or none of us. The consensus was that if Oregon came along, we’d do it.” On subsequently watching the Pac-12’s challenges: “It was like watching your mother-in-law drive over a cliff in your new Cadillac.” Dellenger also writes that the Pac-12 was deep in negotiations with NBC & USA Network on a substantive rights deal until the deal stalled before the finish line. Per an insider close to the situation: “Poof, it was gone. The presidents had to be leaving these meetings going, ‘What the f*** is going on?’ The league lost all credibility. Schools lost faith.” In the end, it was UW President Ana Mari Cauce who changed her mind on what the future would hold: “Overnight, she flipped. That’s what happened.” Washington State AD Pat Chun sums it up: “It’s our own fault we got ourselves to this place. It’s a byproduct of how dysfunctional the Pac-12 had been for over a decade.” More. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz: “Parties in NLRB Los Angeles office's complaint against NCAA, Pac-12 and USC concerning college athletes have proposed new schedule that would spread trial across three, and perhaps four, separate dates: Nov. 7-9, Dec. 18-20, Jan. 22-Feb. 2, Feb. 26-29, if necessary.” (link)

It’s Georgia Tech AD J Batt’s turn on From the Chair with LEARFIELD University Partnerships Group EVP Mike Hamilton. Batt discusses hiring new HCs in men’s basketball and football early in his tenure, the Yellow Jackets’ 20-year, $55M naming rights deal with Hyundai, the speed of the changes occurring across the industry and more. Speaking of the latter, Batt believes the university’s location is advantageous, noting the city has “actually got more college sports fans than nearly any other metro in the country. With Georgia Tech smack dab in the middle of midtown Atlanta we’re in a really good spot to kind of survive that change and really make it into a positive moving forward. I think that's always the challenge. Change is constant, but how do you take advantage of that change?” The partnership with Hyundai, Batt notes, is particularly important because it leverages the school’s technological acumen and comes alongside a $5.5B investment Hyundai is making in the state via a metaplant dedicated to electric vehicles. Batt notes the funding will go “directly to our operating budget” and points out the department will increase its budget by 20% in the first year. Also: “We’re in the early stages of developing a comprehensive capital campaign to really refresh every single one of our facilities. We’re going to put significant investment in Bobby Dodd Stadium, redevelop our premium seating, which is incredibly important today but also particularly here in Atlanta where there are lots of really really high-end sports properties that our fans enjoy…so we've got to rise to meet that standard.” Full interview. Did Alabama Football HC Nick Saban shed some light on the SEC’s future scheduling model? Asked by ESPN analyst/former Oklahoma defensive lineman Dusty Dvoracek about the addition of Texas and Oklahoma, Saban praised the league for expanding without altering the geographic footprint before saying: “The way we're going to do our seven-team, one-team fixed, you're going to play everybody every four years, so almost every guy at your school is going to get to play every team in your conference." FootballScoop’s Zach Barnett notes that under such a format, the following rivalries would no longer be played annually: Alabama-Tennessee; Florida-Tennessee; Auburn-Georgia; LSU-Ole Miss; Texas-Texas A&M; Texas-Arkansas. (link)
|
The Richmond Times-Dispatch’s David Teel breaks down how the ACC’s seven-year, divisionless football scheduling rotation could work and observes that “unlike the four-year model the ACC adopted for 2023-26 but had to scrap after expanding, every program in the seven-year rotation would not have the same number of annual rivals. For example, North Carolina could have three (NC State, Duke and Virginia), while Louisville might have none – Penn State has no yearly matchup in the Big Ten’s format. Virginia Tech-Virginia is a given, but while VT-Miami would be welcomed, the Hokies may have no other annual opponent. Beyond those four – UVA-Virginia Tech and North Carolina vs. UVA, Duke and NC State – Florida State-Miami, Clemson-Florida State, Pittsburgh-Syracuse and Cal-Stanford feel like absolutes, bringing the total to eight.” Meanwhile, the ACC presidents’ mandate that none of the current 14 programs play in California more than three times during the seven years means SMU will play Stanford and Cal annually, bringing the total to 10 yearly pairings. Teel: “If the ACC lands on 10-15 annual matchups, teams will face every rotating opponent at least three times during the seven seasons.” (link)

Tennessee State Football HC Eddie George was asked whether he would have any role in advocating for the university to receive any or all of the $2.1B the federal government says it should’ve received in funding over the course of several years and replied: “Right now I don’t have a big role in that. But I have a vested interest – clearly. This is bigger than an athletics program. It’s $2.1B that could really help this university become elite. I don’t know why it’s been so long. I think we can look across the board holistically across the country and look at every HBCU and see that they’ve been underfunded. Let’s call it what it is – systemic racism. … But I think that there is an opportunity for all the adults in politics to come to the roundtable and do what’s right and give Tennessee State the money that it’s owed. And to make sure that it’s transparent, that it’s going to go towards the things that need to be invested in so that this University can thrive at an elite level.” (link)
|
Seton Hall Men’s Basketball HC Shaheen Holloway is the latest coach to sound off on NIL: “Everybody wanna get paid. It’s not fit no more, it’s how much can you pay me? It’s the wild wild west, to be honest. It’s free agency, that’s what it is. You gotta try to get lucky, man, at the end of the day you gotta try to get lucky.” (link)
