ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips hopes to preserve bowl games as the College Football Playoff expands, telling the Bowl Season Stories podcast there is “nothing that unites college fans and certainly college football fans more than bowl season does, and…those other 36 bowl games matter because we’re going to have a lot of great teams every year and next year will be no different.” Phillips also hopes next year brings some stability. “It’s been an unstable time in the industry, it just has, for a variety of reasons. Not only expansion, but the legal issues, some of the major transformational work that we did at the NCAA, NIL, the transfer portal per se, just lots of things that have been new to the system and a few of these things we still have to get ironed out.” (link)

Ohio AD Julie Cromer sits down with former Wingate (DII) AD Kelley Kish at the 2023 Women Leaders Convention in New Orleans. Cromer says timelines vary when it comes to departments running entirely on the culture an AD establishes. “I also think campus traditions run long and deep and embracing them is part of the deal. So, if you can, find a way to take those campus traditions that everyone's familiar with but put your own spin on them or draw from them a particular quality that matches with the culture you're trying to build. You have a better chance of, one, people jumping on board faster because it feels a little bit familiar to them; it's channeling through the tradition they already know. And then, two, communicating to them that you understand who you’re joining and the group that you’re trying to lead.” When preparing for a new role, Cromer advises “giving yourself grace” and understanding that it’s impossible to be prepared for every eventuality. “We like to jump right into new leadership opportunities. There’s a lot of energy and momentum around it, but you have to hold a little bit back in order to respond to the unexpected. I think you also have to really understand the culture that you're joining, which takes a little bit of time.” Full interview on AthleticDirectorU. (link)

SBJ’s John Ourand says to watch for Amazon to potentially emerge as a player in the expanded College Football Playoff rights. “[VP for Prime Video/Global Head of Sports] Jay Marine and [VP of Global Sports Video] Marie Donoghue made a really big push to go after the Big Ten. Jay Marine, a Michigan grad, loves college sports, loves college football, and the idea that they pushed so hard for the Big Ten shows that they do want to get involved with this in some form.” (link)

Tulane Deputy AD for Operations and Capital Projects Kortne Gosha joins the One Question Leadership Podcast with Tai M. Brown and breaks down what it takes to build a successful athletic department. Gosha specifically cites collaboration within the department, building relationships with campus administrators and external stakeholders, valuing the academic environment, understanding the intricacies between consumer and customer and prioritizing the student-athlete experience. Gosha also talks about the uncertainty in the industry during this period of transition: “At the end of the day, in this profession, we get paid to hit the curveball. Sometimes you see it coming and sometimes you don't. Do your job and do it to the best of your ability, but don't lose focus of why we're here. In times where there are challenges, if you don't provide leadership, the void will be filled by something or someone. In transitions people get nervous, I tell people to do your job and things will take care of themselves." Full podcast. (link)

The total attendance for this weekend’s Crossover at Kinnick Iowa women’s basketball exhibition against DePaul was an NCAA women’s hoops record of 55,646, and Hawkeyes HC Lisa Bluder tells The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman: “It reminded you of the Final Four. It brought those memories back where Hawk fans were there. Our band was there. That’s when I got my first of many emotional minutes today at the Hawk Walk.” Overall, the event raised around $250K for UI Stead Children’s Hospital. The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler observes that San Diego State’s men’s soccer and women’s lacrosse teams are looking for new homes next season. The soccer team is a Pac-12 affiliate member, and the lacrosse team had been set to join in the same capacity next year; now, neither is unsure what the future holds. Zeigler points out that the Mountain West schools that play men’s soccer are Air Force, San Jose State and UNLV. Adding Oregon State as an affiliate member would get that league to six. Another option is joining another conference like the Big West or WAC, where the other three Mountain West teams currently play. While the soccer team has the luxury of those and other options, the women’s lacrosse team is not as fortunate. “Six Pac-12 schools have women’s lacrosse, and SDSU and UC Davis would have made it an eight-team West Coast league this spring. Only one other program in Division I (Denver) is in the Pacific or Mountain time zones.” (link)

Title IX complaints have been filed against five Michigan universities, including Michigan, Michigan State, Eastern Michigan, Grand Valley State (DII) and Saginaw Valley State (DII) regarding their support for women’s sports. MLive.com’s Matthew Miller notes that Michigan awarded male student-athletes $15.7M in scholarships in the 2021-22 school year while female student-athletes received less than $12M. Additionally, UM spent nearly $3.4M recruiting for men’s sports that year and less than $772K recruiting for women’s sports. (link)

The Messenger’s Jeff Goodman talks about WAC Commissioner Brian Thornton’s role in the league’s hoops improvement: “I think honestly what Brian Thornton's done and his staff over there, they deserve the credit for this. I've known Brian since he was a kid, and he's forward-thinking, and that's what you're going to get with a young commissioner like that who has played college basketball at the highest level. He understands it. You’ve got a lot of these other commissioners that are old-school, brought in as businesspeople and they've got their strengths. What Brian's [strength] is, I think, he was in it, number one. He’s incredibly well-connected, number two. And I think he's really good with people, so I think he's the perfect guy. Again, I see all these leagues hiring these businesspeople – and I get it because of the TV contract part of it, that's why they're doing it – but I think what Brian's doing here is his versatility is able to take the WAC to where now I think it's on a major upswing because of of innovation and because he's not afraid to call people and get their input.” (link)

Oregon Football HC Dan Lanning tops USA Today columnist Dan Wolken’s Misery Index this week after the Ducks failed to convert on three separate fourth downs, two of which likely would’ve ended in field goals, in UO’s loss to Washington. Colorado, Auburn, West Virginia and Pittsburgh also make the Index, with Woken writing of CU: “The only thing the Buffaloes have done wrong is make a lot of people think they were something more than a middling team whose rebuild would take much longer than one season. … But what makes Colorado a true Misery Index candidate this week amidst what has been an overall success story? It’s a nasty combination of dramatically raised expectations followed by a swift regression to the mean, capped by one of the worst collapses you’ll see all season.” More. (link)

Tennessee State Football HC Eddie George questioned the fans’ passion for the sport, telling reporters he was happy that nearly 14K people came to Nissan Stadium for the Tigers’ homecoming win over Norfolk State this weekend but adding: “I’m hoping that next week we’ll have the same crowd that was here today. It was great. I would have loved for it to have been packed for the entire game, not just up to halftime when the bands left. But we’ve got a special group. I want our fanbase to really embrace that. … I don’t know if they really love football. I just don’t know. I’ve been here for three years and there’s only been a couple of games they’ve come to – that many people – and been excited. I don’t know if they truly love the game. Because we are winning.” (link)

Stanford’s $40.9B investment fund, which includes the Cardinal’s $36B endowment, returned 4.4% during FY23, outpacing the returns from some of the nation’s other wealthiest universities, including Yale (+1.8%), Penn (+1.3%) and Duke (-1%). Endeavor CEO Ari Emanuel confirms his company has put in a bid for the PGA Tour: “They created a profit investment opportunity for the PGA. We put in a bid I think a week ago, Friday. We are in, in TKO, the sports business. I’m an avid golfer. It’s one of the great sports, I love it, I think we can add to it what we’ve added to all of our sports based on the flywheel.” Asked whether Endeavor’s bid was in addition to the Saudi PIF bid or in lieu of, Emanuel “was very coy about his position,” according to Awful Announcing. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy on league expansion: “Our job as the conference was to provide options to the membership and to our board of directors, etc. — and that’s what we did throughout. We had an agreement and the ACC wanted to do this, but it wasn’t the only option that we considered over a period of time. And then when you look into the future, I just believe you have to be on the offensive side. You have to be aggressive in how you lead and manage. [This] fits nicely where this latest round of expansion has occurred with us having 18 schools, the Big Ten at 18, the SEC at 16 and the Big 12 with 16.” Phillips goes on to say he believes the ACC can stay together in its coming form because he & his team will continue to listen, pay attention and serve its members. On the idea of using Dallas as a central hub for competition in the coming years: “I think you’d be silly not to look at all options when you expand like this. I don’t ever believe you commit immediately to doing it exactly this way or not. I think you have to have some conversations. You have to do some research and have some additional information. But it certainly sits well when you think about that market and you think about what we potentially could do on the West Coast, as well.” More from Phillips & Portnoy. (link)

USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz has a list of leaders who are already cashing in on bowl eligibility. Notably, Oregon State AD Scott Barnes is also on the board with a $20K bump thanks to the Beavers win over UCLA yesterday. (link)

More from SBJ’s profile of former Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby, who has been named a 2023 Champion. Bowlsby recalls first hearing the news that Texas and Oklahoma would leave for the SEC, and SBJ’s Bill King notes: “After confirming the report, Bowlsby’s next calls were to the presidents and athletic directors of both schools. When none of the four answered or returned his calls or texts, he knew what he faced.” Bowlsby adds: “Nobody is going to want to admit that they’re coveting anybody else’s members. But the fact is, if somebody takes mine, I gotta be prepared. I can’t say I honestly had a shortlist. But the process in ’16 helped a lot.” On the buildup to the current state of NIL: “We got close to the [more progressive] end of the continuum. But we could not get the NCAA to put it in place. And the reason we couldn’t is because Mark Emmert and their legal team believed we were going to get sued. They were right. We were going to get sued. But at least we would have articulated an architecture that was based upon principles that would give us some structure. And it also would have informed state governments as to where they could and couldn’t go without challenge. It was a colossal mistake in my estimation. … And when we went to Congress, we would have been able to say: ‘This is what we think it ought to look like.’ We completely ignored our responsibilities to the members when we chose not to put anything out there.” ((link)

The D1.dossier for the AD opening at Little Rock is ready for those of you interested in leading the Trojans. North Alabama AD Josh Looney on his use of a dossier: “It was a wonderful tool to provide a ‘first look’ behind the curtain at the University, particularly beyond Athletics. It really helped me better understand the ‘voice’ on campus behind the numbers that I was able to pull. I also found great value in your log of presidential communication and archive of news narratives.” Up next: Tulane. (link)

Radford is the latest athletic department to ink with Collegiate Sports Connect to take advantage of its Talent Finder solution. Highlanders AD Robert Lineburg: “Radford University Athletics is excited to partner with Connect and their innovative platform to help us identify and recruit new talent. In such a competitive landscape, Radford can now be proactive and intentional in our search process of identifying individuals who best align with who we are.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown examines what happens to Corvallis in a post-Pac-12 world, and City Manager Mark Shepard tells him: “Oregon State is easily the biggest employer in the city. We have a regional hospital system here, and Hewlett-Packard has a presence, but OSU is the big dog. They drive our economy, from housing, to consumer spending, to tourism.” Brown notes the city imposes a 9% tax on hotels and other tourist lodgings. The city keeps 70% of that tax revenue and uses the other 30% to fund the Visit Corvallis non-profit, which is designed to market Corvallis and Benton County as a whole. The city brought in $1.26M in lodging tax revenue during 2022 and projects that figure to increase to $2.2M in 2023 and $2.25M in 2025; however, those estimates were made prior to the Pac-12’s demise. While whatever hit the economy takes post-Pac-12 is unlikely to plunge the city into an economic freefall, Shepard points out that if there is “significant revenue loss, we’d likely either need to cut back on services, or increase fees elsewhere to make up the difference.” Meanwhile, if OSU needs to cut jobs as a result of declining revenues, local consumer spending could be impacted, and Brown explains there’s “also the potential for a harder-to-quantify impact on community branding and psyche since Oregon State represents such an outsized influence on community life.” (link)

West Georgia President Brendan Kelly explains to SBJ’s Ben Portnoy why now was the right time to transition from DII to DI: “The circumstances changed. And that’s not just the circumstances in collegiate athletics. It’s circumstances at UWG, in higher education in America. Expectations changed — students’ expectations changed. When you take all of those factors together and kind of how we operate with every decision, every day, something that seemed like a good idea a few years ago or wasn’t feasible a few years ago, all of a sudden, it makes more sense and it is [feasible].” UWG held conversations with several DI conferences before zeroing in on the Atlantic Sun (and UAC for football), and from the UAC’s perspective, Executive Director Oliver Luck tells Portnoy: “A school like West Georgia, you look at all the measurements, if you will. It’s been a solid program since it started — four out of the last five years in the D-II playoffs, solid record over the last five years, good attendance, a great recruiting area and it’s in a state that we don’t have a footprint in.” UWG’s move to the ASUN will officially go into effect on July 1, 2024. The Wolves owe the Gulf South a $110K exit fee and the ASUN a $200K entrance fee. The department also will add men’s indoor and outdoor track and field (2024), women’s beach volleyball (2025) and women’s stunt (2025) as part of its move. (link)

The bunkers have been lined with the state-of-the-art Bunker Solutions method and trees and underbrush in some areas have been cleared out to improve air flow and sunlight. (link)

Weldon, Williams & Lick, which for 125 years has been the been the market leader in printing sports tickets for major events, is reassessing its business model in an increasingly digital marketplace, and WW&L CRO Evan Gitomer tells On3’s Eric Prisbell souvenir tickets continue to be popular. “When you think about things like college football or college basketball, the fandom and that connection is really second to none. People still want that memento.” WW&L’s current clients in the burgeoning souvenir ticketing space include nine MLB teams, the New Orleans Saints, the NCAA, the Rose Bowl, Alabama and Colorado. Prisbell distinguishes between souvenir tickets, which anyone can buy, and commemorative tickets, which are unique and indicate the holder was in a particular seat for a particular event. “WW&L says its commemorative tickets are a new value proposition slowly being adopted by several MLB postseason teams and are being considered for conference games at several colleges.” Souvenir and commemorative tickets now represent about 5% of the company’s business, and the company projects that figure to climb to 10-12% in the next three to four years. The Coalition for the Registration of Exercise Professionals (CREP), the Intercollegiate Council on Sport Medicine (ICSM) and the U.S. Council for Athletes Health (USCAH) have collaborated to create ATHLETEALIVE2025, a student-athlete safety initiative intended to reduce the prevalence of preventable student-athlete injuries and deaths associated with conditioning and training; inclusive of proper emergency management. The initiative reflects requirements associated with the NCAA Inter-association Recommendations Preventing Catastrophic Injury and Death in Collegiate Athletes. The goal is to reach full compliance by all collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches by January 1, 2025. (link)
