Colorado Mesa President Marshall talks to the Grand Junction Sentinel about the Mavericks AD search, for which he has partially moved into the AD’s office, in order to take the temperature of the department. Marshall expects to have an interim, ideally with CMU ties, named in 3-4 weeks. As for characteristics coaches have indicated they want in the next person to occupy the office: “Somebody who’s going to listen, they want somebody who’s going to be invested in people, they want somebody who’s organized in those systems and is a good decision-maker.” As for his perspective, Marshall isn’t opposed to hiring someone who lacks a formal athletics background: “We’ve seen other places where you bring in a talented executive that maybe the athletics part is what they’re learning. The people management and people leading is the part they know, right? So you maybe envision a non-traditional candidate if they either knew us or really was a very talented leader that maybe had to learn the athletic part. The reality is, if they know the athletics but they don’t have those other components, that isn’t going to work, either. We’ve got amazing coaches and great kids. We’ve got the right model, I’m convinced of that. We’ve just gotta find the right person.” (link)

Dave Campbell’s Texas Football’s Hogue reports that Sul Ross State (DIII) is expected to transition to the LSC beginning with the 2024-25 academic year, after receiving the green light from the Texas State University System in November. Hogue notes that one option on the table for the LSC is to retain Central Washington and Western Oregon as affiliate members in FB, which would leave Simon Fraser in limbo. (link)

GAC Commissioner Prewitt takes to Twitter to position how competitive the Central Region is, noting 18 MBB teams and 21 WBB teams rank in the top 64 of the Massey Ratings, with “All three regional conferences rank in the top third of the 23 D-II m & w hoops leagues measured by Massey & others.” Further: “There are pieces of regionalization that are great for Division II. I support playing regular season contests in ways that make economic sense, minimize missed class time, and promote regional rivalries. However, the discussions on how best to select and bracket teams for Division II post-season brackets need to continue and move forward. There are ways to address geographic and financial concerns while selecting more of our best teams.” (link)

Florida State Rep. LaMarca has proposed a bill, HB99, to amend the state’s NIL law. The bill would prohibit student-athletes from entering an employment contract with their institution, authorize “certain entities and persons to cause compensation to be directed to a current intercollegiate athlete,” while removing the provision that NIL compensation be provided by certain third parties, expand education requirements, permit institutions to provide contract review, tax preparation, and financial advisor services for all intercollegiate athletes,” and more. The Drake Group earlier this month sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) asking it help reconcile gender inequities in NIL, per Front Office Sports’ Christovich. In its missive, the Drake Group explained: “We do not write to suggest that OCR stem this flow of cash to college athletes, but rather to alert OCR that this cash is, with the blessing and/or cooperation of the 1000+ universities in the NCAA, flowing predominantly to men.” The group went on to suggest the DOE confirm that Title IX applies to certain NIL deals. Drake Group President Zimbalist: “Most institutions have virtually ignored their Title IX obligations to equally support male and female athletes in publicity, promotion, recruiting, and athletics financial aid. That preferential treatment of male athletes continues when athletic directors and coaches openly ask NIL collectives to assist their athletic program recruiting efforts by providing NIL payments to prospective and current athletes and the operation of such recruiting collectives primarily benefits male athletes from a single institution.” (link)

Presentation (NAIA) announced it would shut its doors due to enrollment challenges and other issues made worse by the pandemic. Presentation is far from the first higher ed institution to shutter since the onset of COVID, and Inside Higher Ed’s Moody writes: “Now that the spigot of federal relief funds has been shut off, higher education observers believe that other embattled institutions may ultimately succumb to closure, a path that many were on prior to the pandemic.” State Higher Education Executive Officers Association Senior Policy Analyst Burns: “We think that there is going to be a catch-up of closures in 2023, and probably into 2024. It depends on how institutions have decided to spend down those federal funds, where they’ve invested them or given them directly to students. So it’s hard to predict when it’s going to happen and which type of institutions that it will happen to, but we anticipate a catching-up period.” Meanwhile, for higher ed writ large, an S&P analysis calls the outlook “mixed,” noting that “less selective, regional institutions will struggle amid growing competition, higher expenses, and operating margin pressure that could weaken credit quality.” (link)
