Iowa’s search for a new AD is not underway, according to President Barbara Wilson, who “very much hopes” Interim AD Beth Goetz applies for the permanent post. Telling The Daily Iowan student newspaper, Wilson: “I told her when she took this position, ignore the interim and do the job, and she has. She’s out and about connecting with community members. She’s giving talks, she’s representing us at the national and at the Big Ten level. And she’s getting out and about and working with all the coaches.” Meanwhile, Hawkeyes Women’s Basketball HC Lisa Bluder remarked earlier this month: “I’m telling you, I think every coach – and it’s hard to get every coach to agree on something – is behind her 100%. She’s an unbelievable team builder. She is a great leader. She’s a great communicator, a great listener as well. I just think if we don’t hire her, that would be a really, really not smart thing to do.” (link)

Oregon State AD Scott Barnes’ new contract includes specific language regarding conference realignment, according to CollegeAD, which reports the deal calls for Barnes to collaborate with leadership within the Pac-12 or a successor conference to strengthen membership, maximize financial resources, promote the university nationally and globally and more. Barnes is also tasked with creating a staff retention plan and a five-year financial strategic plan. As noted previously, Barnes will receive a $100K signing bonus and earn $928K annually through 2030. If Barnes remains under contract on June 30, 2027, OSU will contribute $300K to his retirement account. Barnes will receive another $225K for his retirement account if he is still leading the Beavers on June 30, 2030. Barnes’ buyout, should he leave before June 30, 2024, would be $1.5M, with that figure decreasing incrementally to $1.25M, $950K, $650K and $350K. From June 30, 2027, and beyond, that figure would be decreased by 50% if President Jayathi Murthy is no longer employed by OSU. (link)

The News & Observer’s Andrew Carter and Korie Dean shed some light on the leadup to NC State ultimately voting in favor of ACC expansion. They report that NC State Board of Trustees Chair Ed Weisiger in mid-August received an “impassioned plea from an old friend,” industry headliner Ben Sutton. The crux of the message, per Carter and Dean, was that the ACC could no longer afford to wait. It read, in part: “We’ve all been watching this movie for 25 years as the ACC consistently waited for others to make the first move and by the time the league’s leaders decided to respond, they were totally reactionary and playing for 3rd and 4th place in a 5 horse race. … The ACC has to expand. And now. It is entirely about setting yourself up for the next move (one of the definitions of strategy).” The ACC, Sutton believed, could “ultimately get eaten up” or “you can play the game…to be the #3 conference in terms of revenue output and one of only three bona fide, financially stable national conferences.” Lots more in an in-depth look at the conversations and thought processes going on behind the scenes. Senate Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell (D-WA) wants any NIL legislation to also address student-athletes’ rights, and she plans to hold a Commerce Committee hearing on the topic within the next 60 days, USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports. Cantwell also characterized the current trajectory of college sports as a “race to the top, where people are like, 'Yeah, we're going to get the two biggest conferences and the two biggest teams, so we're going to get all the revenue and then you guys all get, you know, short shrifted.’ I don't think that's what we want. And so we're going to have to…figure this out. And I think the problem is we have been hoping the NCAA for some time now would figure that out. And yet here the college presidents are – they're in the card game, basically. They're in the card game. And that's a challenge.” Cantwell on the broader set of challenges facing college athletics: “The sub-context here is a huge shift in how the eyeball business is being arranged. And the problem is, just like…the commoditization of advertising has led to less journalistic opportunities, now the eyeball-chasing business leaves a $30M hole in Washington State University because they're the odd man out. And then that leaves that school without resources and without the ability to do not just sports but other very important college priorities. We have to look at that.” More from Cantwell. (link)

Colorado AD Rick George touches on several topics with the BuffStampede podcast, including changes to Folsom Field, about which he says: “We have a really good plan for the west side of the stadium, and that's important for us. We think it allows us to get more engagements with students because we're going to take that first floor and it's going to be open air 365 days a year. Students will be able to cross from the north to the south, south to the north, and it'll be a good thoroughfare for students that we can do some really positive things down there. It's also going to create some premium inventory that will be beneficial for us financially. So, it’s necessary, it needs to be renovated.” There’s currently no timetable for the project. Lots more in the full interview. (link)

Auburn AD John Cohen says the Tigers are having internal conversations about renovations to Jordan-Hare Stadium, telling the Montgomery Advertiser they’re “very exploratory in nature at this point in time. We recognize, I think our fans recognize, campus recognizes that the north end zone is something that is a need. How quickly can it all come together? I don’t know. I think it’s fairly obvious that our scoreboard in the north end zone is kind of a relic. Let’s just say it reminds you of the past, not the future. We’re focused on making that improvement as well. We’re in a really good position (and) we’re trending in the right way to make sure Jordan-Hare Stadium remains the best place to watch college football in the country.” Meanwhile, Cohen says enhancements to Plainsman Park are “off to a good start. I’m very confident that the first phase – the Hall of Fame Club and the seating behind home plate – are going to be ready for Game 1. That's a premium option that we’ve really needed in Plainsman Park for a long time. And then the next phase out in the outfield and down the first-base side is going to be really nice.” (link)

Xavier bringing back football is “not gonna happen in the near term,” according to Musketeers AD Greg Christopher, who tells the Cincinnati Enquirer’s Shelby Dermer: “We're still interested in it, still exploring it, but the reality is the College of Medicine is the higher priority for the university right now. … At the end of the day, we need a facility to move forward. From a facility-planning priority standpoint, the College of Medicine is a higher priority. Hopefully we can get a shovel in the ground on that next year." (link)

Northern Illinois has unveiled its plans for the 1899 Club, a roughly $4M multi-use facility aimed at enhancing “nutritional services for NIU student-athletes in the form of a training table.” The 1899 Club will initially provide training table meals for the NIU football, volleyball and basketball teams and will expand to additional programs. Huskies AD Sean Frazier: "The time is now. Internally, we have talked about this project for a while. We are thrilled to unveil a plan to provide training table space for many of our student-athletes, while also allowing for expansion to our Student-Athlete Academic Support Services area." (link)

UTSA has proposed adding $1.50 per credit hour to the student athletics fee and has launched the Everyone W1NS campaign to ask students to vote on the measure. Under the proposal, the fee would also increase by $1.50 for the next five years, meaning a full-time student would pay $27.50 per credit hour by the start of the 2027-28 school year. Student fees account for 35% of the UTSA athletics budget, and the university hopes this investment can keep them competitive with other schools in the league. Roadrunners AD Lisa Campos: “We talked to student leaders, we talked to students on campus and we were really cognizant of cost inflation, all those things, and $1.50 did feel like the right amount for our students. This fee hasn’t been increased since 2011. It was voted on in 2007 to increase through 2011. And really, what the students are paying now at $20 a credit hour equates to the spending power of $27 a credit hour.” (link)

“Nothing is better at helping build that vision than having professionals who can pull out a sheet of scratch paper and draw out what a donor is talking about.” - Wake Forest Director of Athletics, John Currie.
Wake Forest University had a vision to redefine the student-athlete experience through world-class sports facility design. Dimensional Innovations was honored to help bring that vision to life through a multi-year master plan initiative involving seven athletic facilities.
A holistic evaluation of the university’s athletic programs empowered our team to develop a comprehensive brand strategy to complement Wake Forest Athletics, its administration, and above all, its student-athletes. Collaborative design reviews involving key donors also helped strengthen the overall vision. Hear more from John Currie and Wake Forest Athletics coaching staff on the strategy, benefits and impact this comprehensive master plan will have on the university and its recruits for years to come.

Portland has received a $5M gift from the Chiles Foundation to support short- and long-term improvements and maintenance for the Chiles Center. Pilots AD Scott Leykam: "Simply put, UP Athletics would not be where it is today without Earle Chiles and the Chiles Foundation. This gift will not only have an impact on all of our student-athletes, coaches, and staff, but for all who come through the doors of the Chiles Center." (link)
