The NCAA is nearing a deal that would stream the DII Football, Volleyball and Men’s and Women’s Basketball championships, excluding the FB and hoops semifinals and finals, on Warner Brothers Discovery and Hudl, according to an update from the DII Championships Committee. (link)

The DII Management Council has come out in opposition of proposals for the 2024 NCAA Convention for week 0 Football contests and 56 Softball games in season and eight outside of the championship segment. In their rationale, the council points to these being contrary to the “Life in the Balance” philosophy, impacts on the student-athlete experience and staff and financial implications for both. On week 0, the council notes other solutions may be preferable to accomplish the same goal such as extending the season one week later. Looking to the 2025 Convention in Nashville, the Management Council recommended that the Presidents Council sponsor proposals to eliminate certain requirements around the progress-toward-degree requirements and two-year transfer qualifications. Another Congressional hearing on NIL went down yesterday on Capitol Hill, this time with the Senate Judiciary Committee, which was full of equally insightful & head-scratching comments. A number of high-profile industry reporters, including USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz & Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger were on hand for the festivities…

+ Sen. John Kennedy tells Baker: "You might regret asking Congress to intervene here. ... I'd be real careful about inviting Congress to micro-manage your business."

+ Sen. Ted Cruz: "Bad things will happen, I believe, if government takes over college sports."

+ Sen. Richard Blumenthal: In addition to need for national NIL standards, Congress "needs to address enforceable safety standards" for college sports.

+ Judiciary Committee ranking member Lindsey Graham says that between NIL and the transfer portal, "college football is in absolute chaos" but a federal solution "can't make it so expensive" that it affects lower budget schools in D-1 and schools in D-2 and D-3.

+ Saint Joseph’s (DI) AD Jill Bodensteiner, a witness at the hearing, asks an important question: Why are all NCAA athletes in jeopardy of becoming employees “based largely on the issues in one sport (football)"?

Senate Commerce Committee Chair Maria Cantwell (D-WA) wants any NIL legislation to also address student-athletes’ rights, and she plans to hold a Commerce Committee hearing on the topic within the next 60 days, USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz reports. Cantwell also characterized the current trajectory of college sports as a “race to the top, where people are like, 'Yeah, we're going to get the two biggest conferences and the two biggest teams, so we're going to get all the revenue and then you guys all get, you know, short shrifted.’ I don't think that's what we want. And so we're going to have to…figure this out. And I think the problem is we have been hoping the NCAA for some time now would figure that out. And yet here the college presidents are – they're in the card game, basically. They're in the card game. And that's a challenge.” Cantwell’s bottom line: “You could do a lot of different things here. And so the question is: Is there something that we could get agreement on that would be an immediate thing on trying to not create a process without transparency that is giving some schools advantages right now while we still look at the larger issue? … We're just going to have to get everybody together and see. I'm trying to find a win-win-win situation here. … We’ll see.” More. (link)

+ The NCAA announces that Clippd will provide NCAA golf scoring and ranking services, taking over from Spikemark following an agreed upon handover period. NCAA SVP of Championships Joni Comstock: "We are confident that Clippd will lead us through technology challenges faced during the 2023 fall season, and serve as a valuable partner into the future, as well. The goal of this partnership is to fully deliver the quality services that our student-athletes and the college golf community deserves." (link)

+ Lenoir-Rhyne’s Bears Club raised over $1.22M during FY23. (link)

+ Newman is moving forward with plans to returf and relights its outdoor fields, following a feasibility study last fall. VP for Institutional Advancement Bob Beumer adding that there are more projects that were evaluated, but ultimately “the recommendations came back and said we weren’t ready at this time to move forward with that.” With the eight-figure, three-phase renovation to Sacred Heart Hall, the golf practice facility will need to find a new home. Finally, on the overall facility need, Beumer: “We realize that where Newman’s facilities are right now are not up to par with the rest of the MIAA.” (link)

Bentley will add Women’s Golf as its 24th varsity sport, starting next year. NE10 Commissioner Julie Rupert on the addition of the seventh WGOLF program: “This addition will not only benefit the Falcons but will continue the growth trajectory for the NE10 in the sport as we seek to increase sponsorship across the conference. With this addition, Bentley is providing opportunities for female student-athletes to participate in another NE10 championship sport with access to NCAA postseason play, while receiving top-quality coaching and competitive opportunities.” (link)

Saint Augustine’s terminated Football HC Howard Feggins after playing an ineligible student-athlete earlier this season against Virginia State, per CBS 17. (link); Feggins held a press conference earlier this week to detail the challenges the Falcons faced including practicing without a full-time trainer on concrete while turf was installed at John H. Baker Stadium and unpaid equipment bills. On the former, Feggins recalls: “I kept saying, Why? Why should I put our young man in harm’s way when the administration not showing they care who allows a football team to practice on concrete, basically a high-tempo walkthrough and now go play a fast, physical game on Saturday without proper preparation. As I said, I finally got an email back from the Chief of Staff (Dr. John E. Smith), saying. ‘We cannot forfeit a game, but take a look at the grass beside Google Hall and St. Agnes Hospital. […] Is it wrong of me to protect my players knowing that they were not properly prepared to play a football game? I kept saying, Do they not understand what it takes to play the game?” (link)
