U.S. Senators Richard Blumnethal (D-CT) and Pete Ricketts (R-NE) have introduced the “Name, Image, and Likeness for International Collegiate Athletes Act” – a three-page bill that would allow international student-athletes to participate in NIL opportunities by amending the Immigration and Nationality Act. Blumenthal: “International students should be fairly compensated—just like American citizens—when profits are made from their athletic prowess. They should have rights to name, image and likeness proceeds—resulting from their diligence, discipline and determination. Their blood, sweat, and tears are equally deserving of monetary reward as other student athletes. The current visa system puts them at risk of losing their legal status here if they earn any NIL money. This provision is deeply unfair and demonstrably outdated, and must be reformed, as our legislation would do.” (link, link - Full bill)

Dan Le Batard Show’s Billy Corben sits down with The Guardian’s Jeb Lund about New College of Florida’s foray into athletics. Corben noting: “New College will enroll 70 freshman baseball players under scholarship … despite grades and test scores that lag badly behind other students on campus. This new crop of student athletes at New College had disproportionately received merit based scholarships from admissions of the 179 incoming students awarded the $10,000 per year presidential honors scholarship 84 of those 179 were student-athletes.” Lund, a New College alum, recalls the institution being “a place for people who didn’t fit elsewhere and who wanted to be really academically rigorous,” adding for the new student-athletes: “It's going to be a real disservice to these student athletes. If they want to transfer, if they put up good numbers and they want to go to a different school in the state of Florida, they're not going to have a GPA to transfer with. They're going to have written evaluations and it's not an easy school. The whole point of it being grad school for undergrad you read a lot and you do independent work a lot.” Further on athletics, Lund states: “Allegedly the new coaches for these athletic programs are being paid out of the admissions budget. I looked at one of the proposals for New College getting into the NAIA and if what I saw was what they actually sent in they were intending to send the student-athletes to campus counseling - that was what was going to be their athletic and physical care. Until now the concern was was New College spending money effectively. Now it's just like it seems to be a piggy bank for this project that only has humiliation as its end. It doesn't seem to be about academics. It can't possibly be about athletics.” (link)

On the impact of macroeconomic trends, Anthony: “Now that interest rates have gone up so much, you don't get much hotel development when that happens, you don't get much new bus equipment getting financed when that happens. There's a real concern with labor and shortage not just for your frontline workers in the hospitality industry, but when's the last time you got on a motor coach and your bus driver was under the age of 40 or 50? So there is a shortage in a lot of places within our entire ecosystem of this industry and it's a lot of pricing pressure. It tends to come down, just basic economics, with supply and demand and we're not seeing much of a reduction in demand yet so prices are a challenge.” Check out the full conversation on Connect. Jackson County Circuit Court Judge Justine Del Muro writing: “[Avila] will be unable to meet its scholarship goals for students in need because [its] limited resources will be insufficient to fund the necessary scholarships and institutional aid for students. […] all of the restricted endowments were established to fund student scholarships … relaxing the restrictions on the 97 restricted endowments … is fully consistent with and supportive of the purposes for which the restricted endowments were original established.” (link)
