Keystone AD Scott Gower will exit for a management position with BSN Sports and will be succeeded by Assoc. AD Kacy Manning. U.S. Senators Richard Blumnethal (D-CT) and Pete Ricketts (R-NE) have introduced the “Name, Image, and Likeness for International Collegiate Athletes Act” – a three-page bill that would allow international student-athletes to participate in NIL opportunities by amending the Immigration and Nationality Act. Blumenthal: “International students should be fairly compensated—just like American citizens—when profits are made from their athletic prowess. They should have rights to name, image and likeness proceeds—resulting from their diligence, discipline and determination. Their blood, sweat, and tears are equally deserving of monetary reward as other student athletes. The current visa system puts them at risk of losing their legal status here if they earn any NIL money. This provision is deeply unfair and demonstrably outdated, and must be reformed, as our legislation would do.” (link, link - Full bill)

Birmingham-Southern has been denied a $27M loan from the state of Alabama via a program crafted for struggling private institutions and is now suing the state’s treasurer, seeking to disperse those funds by the end of the month. BSC President Daniel Coleman: “This followed months of discussions in which the treasurer gave no indication whatsoever that any aspect of BSC’s application was wanting, or that he would not act as the Legislature intended when they wrote and passed the Loan Fund bill.” The lawsuit pushes for emergency action as without the funds, the college faces the possibility of closing this semester. Drew receives a record endowment gift from Doug and Cris Lonnstrom to support the baseball program and rename the Rangers’ stadium. AD/Women’s Soccer HC Christa Racine: “This generous commitment from the Lonnstroms will not only strengthen our baseball program, but also provide invaluable support to our student-athletes, enhancing their collegiate experience and empowering them to achieve great success both on the field and in the classroom.” (link)

+ William Patterson broke ground on its 4K square-foot fieldhouse expansion that will include a student-athlete fitness center, expanded training room and new or updated locker rooms for field hockey, softball, women’s soccer, football and baseball. WPU received a $250K lead gift for its $1.5M Pioneering Champions Campaign to support this project, which is slated to be finished in August 2024. (link)

+ Lycoming will commit $2.5M towards a collaborative renovation of Brandon Park with the City of Williamsport that will become the home of the baseball program through at least 2048. (link)

The NCAA Softball Rules Committee approved 12 rule changes for the 2024 season. According to D1Softball, the rule changes will allow “both feet of pitchers to disengage from the playing surface during the delivery when pushing off the pitcher’s plate;” simplifying the definition of obstruction; expand video review to include tag-up plays, all home runs, catch/no catch and more; reduce the pitch clock time from 25 seconds to 20 seconds, which will require batters to be ready within 10 seconds and pitchers to pitch before time expires; require new venues to have a 200-foot distance in left and right fields; allow for a double first base; allow one-way communication devices and more.
