CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio covers several topics with The Field of 68, including what the league looks for in expansion candidates. First, he explains there needs to be a geographic fit. “We do have everybody in basically a geographic quadrant running from Boston to Charleston. Number two, we wanted to be in a situation where all of our institutions were an academic fit within our conference, and everyone we've added has indeed a great academic prowess. And then lastly we were looking for institutions that were committed to not only the betterment of their athletic departments but also committed to the betterment of the student-athletes as students and as people. And in the institutions that we’ve added we have found all of those scenarios to be true.” On the possibility of expanding March Madness, D’Antonio says he’s in favor of increased opportunities but cautions that when making changes to “what might be the greatest sporting event in America,” it’s important to make sure “the event itself is not being compromised in any way.” (link)

USC last week wrote in its NLRB filing that “we encourage [student-athletes] to make yourself available to the media” and that “interviews should be looked at as part of the educational experience offered at USC.” On3’s Eric Prisbell points out that Trojans Football HC Lincoln Riley denied media availability to athletes following Saturday night’s loss to Utah. Interesting move to control athletes amid the ongoing NLRB complaint proceedings.” Meanwhile, Inside Troy owner/publisher Ryan Abraham says it’s the first time he can recall players not being made available to speak in his 20+ years covering the team, and ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg writes: “A truly small-time approach in the big city. USC functioned like an NFL team with media – under multiple coaches – for many years, to its benefit.” (link, link)

The Oklahoma-focused & Student Athlete NIL-managed Crimson and Cream collective has partnered with Ascend to allow members to “roundup all of their daily purchases on their credit card” with proceeds going back to the collective, per On3’s Pete Nakos. Sooners AD Joe Castiglione: “The Ascend Roundup Program represents another innovative solution for our student-athletes to benefit from the use of their own NIL. The beauty of this program is that it’s a simple, convenient way for our fans to directly engage in supporting our student-athletes. We continue to pursue every opportunity we can to ensure OU student-athletes are set up for success when it comes to NIL, and we’re thankful partners like Crimson and Cream are committed to the same effort.” Student Athlete NIL CEO Jason Belzer: “This will create sustainable revenue for the Crimson & Cream collective. We’re bringing major brands into the NIL space through this program, too. It takes some of the weight off donors without asking for them to make significant donations. Now this will just be part of the fan experience.” (link)

Michigan State AD Alan Haller has issued an apology for the use of Adolph Hitler’s image as part of a trivia game on the video board at Spartan Stadium on Saturday. “Michigan State Athletics is responsible for all content shown on its video boards. Before it was displayed, the video was not viewed in its entirety by anyone in athletics, exposing a failure in our process. The video was not part of a sponsorship and had no affiliation with any of our corporate partners or our community. An initial assessment was conducted, and an involved employee has been identified and suspended with pay pending the results of an investigation. The investigation will determine any future appropriate actions. Looking forward, Michigan State Athletics will ensure greater oversight and processes surrounding any material displayed in relation to one of our athletics events. We are committed to ensuring this never happens again and to better demonstrating the inclusive community that we are.” (link); MSU also announces it “will not be using the third-party source going forward and will implement stronger screening and approval procedures" (link); The third-party source in question, The Quiz Channel: “To be clear, I was unaware Michigan State was using my content for entertainment, and this was an unsolicited and unauthorized use. An appropriate trivia question in an inappropriate setting.” (link)

Michigan State trustee Brianna Scott is calling for the removal of Board Chair Rema Vassar, alleging in a letter sent to the board last night that Vassar has bullied colleagues, interfered in legal disputes and attempted to keep word of her meddling out of an official report about the February campus shooting. Scott also criticizes Vassar for refusing to allow investigators to review the contents of her cell phone as part of the ongoing investigation into who at MSU may have forced Brenda Tracy to publicly come forward by leaking her name to local media. “The investigation will cost MSU thousands if not millions of dollars, with the likely result being inconclusive” because of Vassar’s refusal to participate. Also from Scott: “I have been threatened by Dr. Vassar that speaking out against her decisions would result in her turning the Black community against me – and I myself am a Black woman. I have also been warned that speaking out will cause unwanted attention to the Board of Trustees and will harm the university and interfere with our current Presidential Search. But of the many values I've developed as a Black person, as a woman, and as a Spartan, chief among them is standing up for what's right.” Lots more. (link)

McClain explains the Golden Eagles are experiencing a great deal of momentum since the move to the Sun Belt. “There are a lot of good things happening on our campus. The “average starter at a big-time football program now takes in about $103K a year,” according to the New York Times’ David Fahrenthold and Billy Witz, citing data from Opendorse. This year, Opendorse expects to process over $100M in payments for student-athletes, with about 80% coming through collectives, and Utah Football HC Kyle Whittingham says: “[NIL] the most important thing in college football. It’s the most important thing in recruiting, which is the most important thing to your program.” Meanwhile, charity experts were “bewildered,” per Fahrenthold and Witz, who explain that the “BPS Foundation, for instance, takes in tax-deductible donations, and then puts them at the disposal of for-profit collectives at Penn State and 24 other schools.” Moving forward many collective leaders say they are worried that donors would stop contributing, especially if they cannot claim tax deductions. Penn State donor Dick Stewart, for example, asserts: “If it’s not a 501(c)(3), I’m not going to give money to it.” Lots more from the NYT. (link)

Puck’s Julia Alexander offers some advice on media rights deals moving forward: “Whatever happens with the next rights agreements across all major sports, finding a way to include Twitch or YouTube or TikTok or Instagram or even X influencers that can simulcast feeds (load it up with extra targeted advertising!) to enhance the feed should be a crucial play. ManningCast does this, of course, but pairing entertaining and informative analysis from your favorite creators while also not having to maintain separate screens is one way to increase reach, target younger audiences, and navigate changing distribution models. This will, naturally, be an issue for the big media partners. But finding a way to navigate this will be crucial for the leagues and players, and is something the legacy content companies should be thinking about as they test out better content/tech/distribution integrations.” (link)

Eastern Kentucky AD Matt Roan’s new deal in Richmond runs through June of 2027 & includes a bump in base pay from $200K to $215K. Annual incentives could earn Roan up to 50% of his base pay. Per CollegeAD: “Should EKU opt to terminate without cause, Roan would be owed a $215,000 buyout that can be paid in monthly installments over the course of the term. If Roan were to end the agreement early, he would owe a $50,000 buyout.” (link)

The D1.dossier for Tulane is complete & ready for use by those of you going after the leadership role in the Big Easy. Save yourself hours upon hours of research prep. Ball State AD Jeff Mitchell on his experience using a dossier: “Possessing information lacks true value if it’s not pertinent, and D1.dossier offers a competitive advantage because it provides the right information to prospective candidates to help them prepare for an interview and the job itself when hired. I developed my unique outline to help get ready for my interviews at Ball State while using the D1.dossier feature. I found the information to be relevant and comprehensive. D1.dossiers is a must-have resource for college coaches and administrators.” (link)

North Carolina football may have been tripped up by Virginia last night, but the return of HC Mack Brown & his subsequent on-field success has led to some bumper fundraising results for the Tar Heels. Per SBJ’s Ben Portnoy: “UNC received an average of $7.99 million in contributions to the football program in Brown’s first three seasons back as football coach, NCAA financial documents show. Individually, the 2020, 2021 and 2022 fiscal years represented three of the four largest years of contributions to football in the last decade (the one year of those Brown wasn’t responsible for came amid Fedora’s 11-3 2015 campaign).” Senior Assoc. AD for Capital Projects & Facilities Rick Steinbacher estimates the Tar Heels have spent $100M to $150M on football upgrades over the last decade as UNC AD Bubba Cunningham remarks: “Back in the late ’80s, early ’90s, basketball drove the economics of college athletics. And then as we’ve gotten into more conference contracts for televising football games, that’s where the revenue growth has been and that’s where the investment has been. Ten years, 15 years, 20 years, it’s been a gradual incline of investment in football, but again, so has the return.” (link)

Michigan State ran a pregame trivia question on its main screen inside Spartan Stadium during yesterday’s kick with rival Michigan asking where Hitler was born. There was quick blow back & the Spartans have apologized: “MSU is aware that inappropriate content by a third-party source was displayed on the sideboard prior to the start of tonight’s football game. We are deeply sorry for the content that was displayed, as this is not representative of our institutional values. MSU will not be using the third-party source going forward and will implement stronger screening and approval procedures for all video board content in the future.” (link)

The LA Bowl is now the “LA Bowl hosted by Gronk.” Per Tucson.com: “The four-time Super Bowl champion tight end’s attachment to the bowl game at the now 3-year-old, $5 billion-plus Inglewood, California, stadium replaces that of late-night television personality Jimmy Kimmel.” More from Rob Gronkowski: “The whole goal is hopefully to land the University of Arizona. And if we can’t, there’s a lot of good teams in the Pac-12 that would be a great matchup no matter who it is. [...] Jimmy was a fantastic host and brought a lot of elements to the game. But it’s my turn now and I’m going to turn it up, that’s for sure.” (link)
