Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman informs that “there’s strong mutual interest” in extending the Big East Tournament at Madison Square Garden through at least 2032, which would be the half century mark of the relationship. On the possibility of expansion, Ackerman states: “There really hasn’t been any school that is sort of, exactly perfect — including in geography.” The Big East has tapped Allen and Company to assist with its media rights negotiations, which will begin with an exclusive negotiating window this winter. Ackerman also confirms that the Gavitt Games against the Big Ten will not continue beyond this season, explaining that “We had an agreement in principle, we sent them a contract, and then they changed their minds. We were told that they are reassessing their conference schedule, their conference load, in the wake of their new alignment.” (link, link)

Clemson hired consultant Chris Bevilacqua to explore the Tigers’ conference alignment options six months ago, per CBS’ Dennis Dodd, who adds: “While the move doesn't indicate an imminent move out of the ACC for Clemson, the hiring of Bevilacqua is seen as a significant development.” (link)

Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger dives into how the structure of the eventual relationship between the Mountain West and Oregon State & Washington State could impact the CFP, particularly as it pertains to a 6+6 vs a 5+7 model. Per Dellinger’s sources, proposed models include OSU & WSU playing seven or eight games vs MWC schools with a lack of consensus on whether those games would count in conference standings. Neither the Pac-12 holdovers (awaiting legal resolution) nor the CFP appear in a huge rush to make a decision, but Beavers AD Scott Barnes does note that “We want fair consideration under a Power Five umbrella. We want access, and distribution is important. We didn’t put ourselves in this position. We’ll continue to invest at a Power Five level. We have an expectation that we’ll be able to discuss what access and distribution look like while creating our path forward. [...] We didn’t cause this. Those that did need to help us with the solution.” Dellenger reports the distribution is likely not in question, but AQ status is not at all guaranteed, calling up Notre Dame as a comparable situation. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey doesn’t believe 6+6 is a viable option any longer, stating: “The system really can’t justify that. If you displace the 11th best (at-large) team with an unranked team, the system can’t explain itself.” On that notion, Cougars AD Pat Chun: “Both schools respect the playoff and understand the need to keep the integrity of the playoff. The conversations I’ve had and we’re going to have with CFP, we will get there. There’s a lot of noise and bluster, but our side of the fence does understand the key factors. We are committed to keep the integrity of the playoff.” (link)

Missouri AD Desiree Reed-Francois dives into a number of topics with PowerMizzou as the Board of Curators are set to vote on a facilities project next month that will impact every Tigers program. Reed-Francois: “We have great alignment with our board and our president. Michael Williams as our board chair, he's a great man who cares about Mizzou and has really been an incredible supporter and driver. You couple that with the President and his innovation and his brilliance and we've got a really special moment in time.” On her aspirations for Mizzou: “Whenever you have great momentum then that means that you want to continue that momentum and you do that by constantly looking for greater goals. Someone likened it to when you're riding your bike, and you're going up a hill, and then you hit that top bit, you know, there's a bunch of bigger hills. So that means you’ve got to pedal even faster when you're going down that hill. And that's it. We're certainly not at the top of the hill. We're still going up. But we’ve got to keep pedaling and keep pedaling harder and keep pedaling faster. […] We're not happy just being participants in the Southeastern Conference. I'm not interested in participation trophies. We're in here. We deserve to be in here. And let's go. Let's continue to take this momentum and that's why we're pushing so hard.” More. (link)

Colorado rolls out its 2024-26 Strategic Plan, which further embraces the WHOLE (Wellness, Health, Optimal Life Experience) student-athlete concept and redefines core values of Respect, Accountability, Passion, Integrity and Dedication (RAPID). The plan identifies a quintet of major constructs – Nationally Recognized, Winning Championships, Operating in a Fiscally Responsible Manner, Developing WHOLE Student-Athletes and Building a world class infrastructure – with strategic and tactical objectives, as well as focal point goals and check points, including championship targets for specific sports. AD Rick George: “When we started this, everybody was surprised that we would put those goals out publicly. But I think you have to put your goals out there for people to see and then communicate where you are in the process. Our coaches were engaged in developing what those metrics look like and that's important. Everybody has to have buy-in as to where we're headed.” (link)

Extra Points purveyor Matt Brown digs into the data to explore if NIL has improved college football parity. Using 247Sports’ Bud Elliott’s Blue-Chip Ratio theory that teams gunning for a title need to have at least 50% of high schools recruits as consensus four or five-star players, 16 teams fit that criteria this season. In the 2024 recruiting rankings, 77 of the top 100 recruits are committed to those schools with another five committed to Florida State, who is right outside the 50% threshold. Looking back, previous classes had a larger share of recruits attending non-Blue-Chip schools and less schools having ratios above 70%, showing that “elite high school football recruits are more likely to attend the same handful of elite institutions and are congregating at those institutions in greater percentages than they were pre-NIL and portal.” As far as transfers, “The truth is, truly elite high school prospects don’t actually transfer that often. […] The bulk of these highly sought-after transfers were more marginal HS recruits who were highly productive at other institutions.” Outside of elite programs, Brown writes: “I do think it’s fair to say that the transfer portal (and maybe to some extent, NIL) has made it much easier for bad teams to get better quickly. […] If you define parity as “the ability for almost anybody to go 6-6”, then sure, we now have parity.” More. (link)

+ SMU inks a long-term extension with LEARFIELD that also includes deals with CLC, Paciolan, LEARFIELD Amplify and SIDEARM Sports. + Student Athlete NIL and The Brandr Group are teaming up to streamline student-athlete activations. TBG CEO Wesley Haynes: “We’ve been working with SANIL on a project basis for over a year now and as the influence and impact of collectives becomes stronger it made sense to formalize our collaboration. SANIL’s local presence and networks are a perfect complement to our group licensing rights, content development, and national brand activation efforts. The work that SANIL is doing to professionalize the collective ecosystem is innovative and sustaining and we’re excited to align with those efforts.” (link)

FOX President of Insights and Analytics Michael Mulvihill on the increase in TV viewership: “While the first two days of March Madness are rightly beloved, I think a typical CFB Saturday is now even better. More games, more networks, more betting opportunities, better atmosphere. Average CFB Sat viewership this year has been equal to March Madness Thu & Fri *combined*. […] It’s subjective but there’s a fair argument that the three sports having the best 2023 are all collegiate: football, women’s basketball, women’s volleyball. The idea that athlete compensation would wreck college sports is proving to be one of the worst takes in sports history.” (link, link); Extra Points’ Matt Brown adds: “It's correct to argue that NIL hasn't been the ratings boogeyman that the NCAA thought it would, but to be fair, ESPN's own research pointed to the overall ratings boost being overwhelmingly driven by like, four programs. CLEARLY legalized gambling is driving interest too. […] This is good news for ESPN, and good news for brands that advertise with ESPN, but I'm not sure it can be so neatly folded into any narratives about like, the Sun Belt or MWC or even the health of the sport in general.” (link)

37 Boston College Swimming and Diving student-athletes will have their lawsuit against BC heard today amidst hazing allegations. Documents submitted by the institution and affidavits confirmed a series of hazing incidents at parties over Labor Day weekend, but did not confirm the more vulgar allegations, with AD Blake James’ affidavit confirming swimming and diving student-athletes were found responsible for hazing back in 2022. State of Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis has submitted a request for all records related to the waiver process for now-eligible North Carolina Football student-athlete Tez Walker and currently-ineligible Florida State Football student-athlete Darrell Jackson. Patronis writing: “While I’m happy that Mr. Walker is now playing college football, it begs the question, what was this new information? Why is Mr. Walker now eligible to play when other student-athletes, including Florida State Defensive Tackle Darrell Jackson, are not? What is the NCAA hiding, and why are these decisions made behind closed doors? Were special accommodations made for UNC and no other programs? The reality is time is fleeting and each day that passes Mr. Jackson is not allowed to play is robbing him of his opportunity to achieve his dreams of being a student athlete. The NCAA’s lack of transparency on this issue raises equal protection and anti-trust concerns.” (link)
