The AAC has voted to add Army West Point as a football-only member, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel and others. Per ESPN: “Army will serve as a replacement for SMU, which is joining the ACC next year, to keep the AAC at 14 teams for football. The football-only addition follows a similar arrangement to the one Navy has with the conference. Ensuring that the longstanding rivalry game between Army and Navy is played at the end of the college football season was an important detail to solve as part of Army's addition.” ESPN’s Heather Dinich reports the Black Knights and Midshipmen will not face other in an AAC regular-season game and that the rivalry would continue as a non-conference matchup. If both finish in the top two in the conference standings, they would play each other in back-to-back weeks – first for the AAC title, and then in the rivalry game the following week. (link)

Tarleton State AD Lonn Reisman will retire this spring after 31 years leading the Texans. President James Hurley: “Five years ago, when we made the decision to embark on the NCAA Division I reclassification journey, Lonn and I made a commitment to see it through together. We have successfully completed the process, established a culture of athletic excellence, and made significant investments into infrastructure and budgets. I cannot think of a better leader in athletics to have led us through this journey than Lonn Reisman. […] Tarleton State University is thriving in every possible way," said President Hurley. "This is an elite destination for students and student-athletes from all over the country. We are excited to see who will come in and build off Lonn's incredible legacy and continue the commitment to success and excellence that is here at Tarleton State.” Parker Executive Search will assist with the search for Reisman’s successor. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips began the second day of the ACC Tipoff with a Q&A session and said of the additions of Stanford, Cal and SMU: “We are a national conference. We've been a regional conference. Two years ago would we have done this? Probably not, but times have changed, and you either get on the offensive or you don't. … The league is healthy. At the end of the day, my job is to run the ACC and make sure it's healthy for the next 70 years as it has been the last 70 years. I cannot control individual feelings on campuses, but we have addressed head-on anything that our campuses have indicated. I feel great. I really do. I've never been more bullish. I can't say that I felt that way a year ago.” Phillips says the league was in constant communication with ESPN during expansion talks in regards to the pro rata agreement of adding new teams, and “as it relates to the financial piece of it, we're still working on some of that. But as has been stated, we're going to use some dollars for the success initiative pool. We're going to use some of the new CFP dollars for the success initiative pool. We're still working through a few of those things, but it has benefit for our entire membership for certain.” As far as what future conference hoops tournaments will look like, Phillips says he doesn't know if all 18 teams would be invited. “I think you've got to earn your way to play in I think the most prestigious postseason basketball tournaments in the country, and if you don't get to a certain threshold, then you just don't make it that year.” Full transcript. Former Michigan State Football HC Mel Tucker has been found responsible for violating the school’s sexual harassment policy. Hearing officer and Title IX attorney Amanda Norris Ames determined Tucker sexually harassed and exploited Brenda Tracy. USA Today’s Kenny Jacoby: “Tucker's account to the investigator – that he and Tracy had been in a romantic relationship and had consensual ‘phone sex’ – was deemed less plausible, less consistent and less supported by the evidence than Tracy's, according to the report, which Tracy shared with USA Today. Ames wrote that Tucker's repeated contradictory statements to the investigator made his account difficult to believe. Jacoby points out that “Tucker also did not present any documentation or witnesses supporting his claims that he and Tracy had been romantically involved, while several witnesses, text messages and emails supported Tracy's version of events.” (link)

Oregon State and Washington State have filed a motion for a preliminary injunction seeking control of the Pac-12 Board, The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach reports, adding: “Lawyers representing the two schools filed the motion, citing information obtained through discovery that they say confirms that schools ‘delivering a notice of withdrawal prior to Aug. 1, 2024’ automatically lose their Board seats.” Specifically, the filing cites Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff multiple attestations in sworn declarations that USC and UCLA automatically “were removed as Board representatives under the Constitution and Bylaws following their notice of withdrawal from the Pac-12.” Meanwhile, after Colorado announced it was leaving for the Big 12 in July, the Pac-12 notified the school the following day that “CU’s representation on the Pac-12’s Board of Directors automatically ceases effective immediately, and CU no longer has the right to vote on any matter before the Board.” On top of that, the filing notes Kliavkoff informed a reporter following the departures of Arizona, Arizona State, Utah, Oregon and Washington that “we have 4 board members.” From OSU and WSU: “The evidence we have uncovered thus far in discovery overwhelmingly shows this is consistent with the position that the conference and the departing members themselves had taken up until just weeks before Oregon State and Washington State were forced to file our litigation.” (link)

Le Moyne AD Bob Beretta reacts to the NEC losing Merrimack and Sacred Heart as the Dolphins prepare to join the league: “I’d love to say it was unexpected, but we all know that it’s a dynamic time in college sports. We know there’s a seismic shift going on. We’re not immune to it.” The league has a two-year grace period to expand and reach the threshold needed for men’s and women’s hoops NCAA Tournament AQs, and Beretta acknowledges that “there are some short-term challenges. It’s a relationship business and the commissioner is gifted in relationships. We have full confidence in her finding a solution. I think that there is solidarity among the group. I think the remaining institutions have similar missions and desires. I think we’ll be united behind our commissioner.” (link)

The DI Board of Directors has tasked NCAA staff and committees with reviewing current transfer rules and waiver guidelines to consider potential modifications to improve the efficiency of the waiver process, including increasing, where possible, objectivity of criteria. Any such modifications would be applied for any student-athletes seeking immediate eligibility for the 2024-25 academic year. Board Chair/Georgia President Jere Morehead: "The Division I board continues to affirm that NCAA staff and the Committee for Legislative Relief are applying existing transfer waiver guidelines as intended by members. We continue to view student-athlete well-being and mental health as a priority for the Association and will continue to look at whether those priorities can be addressed more objectively and be better understood by members of the media and public." Michigan staffer Connor Stalions in a text exchange with a former student at a Power 5 school boasted that before COVID, he “stole opponent signals during the week watching TV copies then flew to the game and stood next to [then Michigan OC Josh] Gattis and told him what coverage/pressure he was gettin.” Sports Illustrated’s Richard Johnson goes on to report that “Stalions, now 28, revealed that he was part of a small group of people – two of whom he said were at low-level positions on different college football coaching staffs – who were putting their heads together on a long-term plan to run the Michigan football program. Stalions claimed to have a Google document between 550 and 600 pages long that he managed daily, containing a blueprint for the Wolverines’ future. He referred the document as a movement more than a plan, dubbing it ‘the Michigan Manifesto.’” Stalions also professes to have “name-dropped” former Navy Football HC Ken Niumatalolo’s name to procure a “decade’s worth of high school national standardized test scores and GPAs for approximately 500 Midshipmen football players” shortly after graduating from the Naval Academy, per Johnson, who notes Stalions “was coy over whether he had [deleted the info the next day as he’d been told to] and made clear that he used the data to inform his recruiting philosophy.” More from Johnson on Stalions’ long-term ambitions and the Michigan Manifesto. Bestselling author/prominent Michigan insider John U. Bacon today shared his belief that Wolverines supporter Jim Stapleton, who reportedly has a grudge against Football HC Jim Harbaugh, is the source of a lot of the information regarding the sign-stealing accusations. “Jim Stapleton is a Michigan alum who blackballed Harbaugh when he was [interviewing] with the Minnesota Vikings because [Stapleton] was on the board for the Minnesota Vikings. He now got himself onto the NCAA Infractions Committee and he hates Jim Harbaugh. It doesn’t matter who the source is or if it’s right or wrong. If Michigan did it, they’ll still pay a price. That’s not the point. You can’t kill the messenger. But as far as the leaking goes, I would guarantee you that’s where it’s coming from.” Bacon previously accused Stapleton of sabotaging former HC Rich Rodriguez’s tenure in Ann Arbor and of using his status as a Vikings minority owner to prevent the team from hiring Harbaugh. The Athletic’s David Ubben catches up with three Power 5 football HCs and one Group of 5 HC to ask about the impact stealing signs can have, and one P5 HC calls the allegations “disgusting” and adds: “That’s huge. There’s no other way to say it. That’s as big as it gets. It’s the biggest advantage in college football, I would say. How does it get any bigger? If that’s what they’re doing, oh, my gosh. I think it’s huge. I really do. I don’t think it can be overstated.” Also from that HC: “Everybody gets it off video. If you’re not watching coaches’ copies and doing it, you’re not doing your job. You can hear the (on-field television) mics pick up, this word is code word for this. Or this is code for that. That’s part of it.” A second P5 HC says: “If they’re using electronic devices during the game to videotape a signal person for the other team and watching the tape and matching it up, that’s BS and above and beyond the line.” The G5 HC tells Ubben: “Use the same advantage everyone else has. Every one of your opponents’ TV copies is available. All-22 is available. Do what everybody else is doing. That’s the standard. And if you’re going to do it, do a better job covering your ass.” Meanwhile, multiple coaches say believing you’ve stolen signals is different than actually having them, as the fear of having misinformation can make playcallers gun shy. U.S. Integrity CEO Matt Holt tells CBS’ Dennis Dodd that “we just haven't found any betting issues (with Michigan). If there are betting issues they've done a really good job of covering them up. Considering how sloppy they've been with everything else that doesn't seem likely.” Holt also says: “It's not going to take a rocket scientist (re Mich) to go, 'Hey, if we're doing this and we think it's going to make our performance on the field or court so much better, we should probably try to financially gain too.' So far, we haven't found any of those. … We would look for people that normally bet $50 on football that bet thousands of dollars on Michigan. Or against MIchigan opponents' player props. We just haven't seen it ... [It looks like] a competition issue.” (link, link, link)

SBJ’s Ethan Joyce takes a look at the tech upgrades NC State has made at Carter-Finley Stadium, including the utilization of Paranoid Fan, a web-based platform that maps out professional and college venues. The school has access to the platform via its partnership with LEARFIELD, and the Carter-Finley map shows different parking areas, concessions locations, merchandise sales points, bathroom locations and other essential information. NC State has also installed a new $15M, 166’x43’ Daktronics video board, and, looking ahead, Wolfpack Senior Assoc. AD for External Relations Colin Hargis says N.C. State has held conversations with Lenovo about AI and potential future-use cases in Carter-Finley for queue management and wait-time management. “There really has been a focus over the last two-to-three seasons of what are some forward-thinking – whether it be innovative, tech-facing – but I think most importantly, fan-facing and fan experience-friendly initiatives that we could implement?” (link)

CAA has hired former Adidas consultant T.J. Gassnola as a consultant, per Trilly Donovan. Gassnola, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in connection to the FBI’s men’s hoops probe, “has been making stops at campuses to visit with coaches in an effort to bolster CAA's coaches' division” and created “quite a buzz in the college hoops world,” per CBS’ Matt Norlander.
