Wheaton (IL) selects Acting AD/Men's Basketball HC Mike Schauer as its permanent AD, after leading the Thunder on an interim basis since May 2022. Schauer will remain in charge of the MBB program. VP for Student Development Paul Chelsen: "Coach Schauer has demonstrated to the campus over the past year and a half that he is as effective an Athletics Administrator as he is Wheaton's Head Men's Basketball Coach. Wheaton Athletics and the Men's Basketball team are both thriving under his leadership and under the support of the Athletics Administrators, Coaches, and Athletic Trainers." (link)

Dominican names Lewis (DII) AD John Planek to the same role with the Stars, starting November 6. President Glena Temple: "Dr. Planek understands the importance of athletes excelling in their chosen sport while also achieving in the classroom. I know I speak for the university community when I say how eager I am to see the new level of excellence that his leadership will bring to our student-athletes and our athletics program as a whole." NCAA President Charlie Baker in last week’s Senate Judiciary Committee hearing asked Congress to “codify current regulatory guidance into law by granting student-athletes special status that would affirm they are not employees,” and Sportico’s Michael McCann observes: “There’s a risk for the NCAA in making this request: Why would Congress craft a new, ‘special status’ for college athletes as non-employees if, as the NCAA has argued in court, college athletes aren’t employees under existing law? No special status would be needed – unless the athletes are, in fact, employees. … It’s a two-step dance that might cause the NCAA to trip. Expect attorneys representing college athletes to cite Baker’s testimony in written motions and during oral depositions of witnesses (potentially including Baker), conference executives and athletic directors. The NCAA, those attorneys will maintain, has now effectively conceded college athletes meet employment criteria. … One point is clear: The NCAA and its member colleges are running out of time before a massive shift occurs and a court deems potentially hundreds of thousands of college athletes employees. The NCAA banking on Congress—which doesn’t even have a Speaker of the House, is as politically divided as ever and is entering a contentious presidential election year—doesn’t seem like a wise bet. The NCAA should instead step up and change its rules.” (link)

The Washington Square News’ Ania Keenan reports NYU SVP for University Life Jason Pina has stepped in to lead athletics on an interim basis, as the university has begun the search for a new AD. Keenan also reports that just prior to former AD Stuart Robinson’s termination, Senior Assoc. AD Matt Huck was removed as the athletics HR representative, pointing to anonymous sources who say Huck dismissed or minimized allegations against Robinson. (link)

Neumann has received a $15M matching gift from Ed Snider Youth Hockey & Education to build a 98K square-foot on-campus hockey arena that would feature two ice sheets, a 750-seat one for the Knights and one for the Snider program. The university will need to raise the remaining funds for the $35M project and, if funding is secured, would open in 2026. NU President Chris Domes: “We think bringing the sport onto the physical campus will be terrific for us and our student body. Hockey is a fun sport to watch and it will expose students who might not have had a chance to know much about the sport.” (link, link - renderings included)
