NCAA DII VP Steeb Gronau sits down with Collegiate Sports Connect/MB Sports’ Banker to recap the NCAA Convention, votes from the business session and big issues facing the division. On the lone proposal voted down last week to allow coaches to have access to their S-As over the summer, Steeb Gronau: “That proposal allowed for a real healthy dialogue and discussion among Division II members, among coaches, among student-athletes about what really should be happening in the summer when it comes to access. We heard throughout the process all through the fall and even heard it on Saturday during the debate on the convention floor is that particularly student-athletes felt as though they didn’t want to feel pressured to come back in the summer to participate in these activities. They wanted a chance to potentially go home, to do a summer job, to do an internship and that really does all focus back on that life in the balance philosophy.” Moving forward, the DII governance structure will continue to review a number of the recommendations from the Implementation Committee. NCAA CMO Hainline joins D1.ticker/Connect’s Fischer from the NCAA Convention, and the two discuss the latest from the CARE Consortium, the recent cannabis summit, the changing conversation around mental health, troubles finding athletic trainers and more. In discussing the scary situation that occurred with Buffalo Bills safety Hamlin, Hainline notes that “up to four to eight athletes die a year from cardiac arrest, and it’s not because a sport is contact or collision. It really has to do with other issues that are often within the individual’s heart itself. It may be enlarged or it may be prone to an irregular heartbeat.” Hainline also notes the Hamlin situation demonstrates the importance of on-field management. “We know with sudden cardiac arrest, if you do everything properly, especially within the first three minutes, and you can restore a heart rhythm, the likelihood that you’re going to have a good recovery is very high. I think what was demonstrated on the field during the NFL game is that the emergency management response was absolutely spectacular.” Lots more in the full Q&A, now live on Connect. (link)

An NIL bill introduced in Oklahoma by State Senator/Majority Leader McCortney (R-Ada) would prohibit student-athletes from being designated as employees; remove requirements that NIL compensation is “commensurate with market value;” remove language from the original Oklahoma NIL legislation that limits the impact collectives can have on NIL deals with student-athletes; allows schools to adopt reasonable restrictions on NIL activities that interfere with team activities/school operations; and assert that athletic associations can’t prohibit schools from partnering with third parties to identify, enable and support NIL activities on their behalf.
