Sportico’s Daniel Libit talks with NCAA SVP of External Affairs Tim Buckley about his task to, as Libit puts it, “redirect the conversation about the NCAA’s much-maligned enforcement duties while emphasizing stories about the athletes it is supposed to serve.” Buckley says his previous role as NCAA President Charlie Baker’s gubernatorial chief of staff has prepared him for the college sports industry. “Any time you have a transition in leadership, it is an opportunity to do a reset on all kinds of things. I thought it was important as much as possible to reset the relationship with members of media.” Libit notes that one of Buckley’s first moves was to “relegate almost all enforcement news from the NCAA’s primary Twitter/X account (@NCAA), with its nearly 2M followers, to the organization’s @NCAA_PR account, which has only around 66,000 followers.” Buckley: “We are not going to hide NCAA infractions from the media. You have to meet it head on and do as much explaining beforehand, so people have a good basis of facts before we are talking about why a certain decision is made. That being said, there was also just an opportunity to better integrate the communications office with what the association does best.” Lots more from Libit on the NCAA’s PR strategy. (link)

Army West Point AD Mike Buddie says he made it a point to network with the other Group of 5 ADs and commissioners in recent years in the event Army felt it was necessary to join a conference, but says of the talks with the AAC themselves that “this was kind of a weird negotiation in that neither side was overly, passionately, desperately wanting this to happen. I think the American clearly wanted Army. If they were going to go to 14, Army was their clear choice. But I think they also knew there's a lot of options for the 14th team. Our side, we kind of thought 'Well, you know what, we're happy being independent.' We're not like in desperation of having to join a conference. It actually made it a less stressful negotiation. And then it was like, ‘Hey, we'll explore it. And if you can make it make sense for us, then let's talk.' Commissioner Aresco was very similar in that he said, ‘Hey our membership is very interested in you, but it's got to make sense for us as well.' It was very interesting." (link)

Tennessee’s football season ticket waiting list has grown beyond 5K people, according to Vols AD Danny White, who says: “We have a new season ticket sales staff. What they do all day every day is sell new season tickets. Now they’re selling opportunities to be on the waiting list.” As for why the Vols don’t simply sell more football season tickets, White explains: “It’s not really an option because we’re running out of inventory. [Remaining tickets] make up a really small percentage of the stadium. We don’t really have any variance. We’d have to expand the stadium to sell more season tickets.” On the flip side, White explains why the Vols don’t hold back more tickets: “I’ve always been a proponent of building the season ticket base because our passionate fans should be rewarded and have the certainty that they can come to games. I also think it’s a smart business strategy for us. I’ve always been a ‘hay is in barn’ kind of guy. Meanwhile, UT reports there are fewer than 500 season tickets remaining at Thompson-Boling Arena for the upcoming basketball season. Overall, there have been roughly 14,000 men’s hoops season tickets and 6,500 women’s hoops season tickets sold. (link)

Kansas has received a $25M gift from alumnus R. Todd Slawson to support the KU endowment and Jayhawks athletics specifically. Slawson has ensured that a significant portion of his gift will support the Gateway District, on which construction is slated to begin after the football season. The remainder of Slawson’s gift will establish the Todd Slawson Athletic Fund, which will provide support for the top priorities of the athletic department. Jayhawks AD Travis Goff: “Todd’s ongoing commitment to KU and Kansas Athletics will have an immeasurable impact. We are all humbled by his generosity and his eagerness to be at the forefront of a project that will forever transform the University of Kansas.” (link)

San Diego Football HC Brandon Moore insists he had “no prior knowledge at any level” about alleged hazing activities. USD has also responded to the lawsuit filed by former USD QB A.J. Perez, maintaining that Moore “had no advance knowledge” of any hazing and “it was Coach Moore’s alarm and quick response that prompted the entire investigation.” Moore adds: “The events reported to me were counter to the directive I issued to our players and coaches about hazing not being tolerated in any shape or form in my first team meeting. As soon as I heard the allegations, I immediately reported them to university leadership, and we suspended all football activities as we initiated the preliminary investigation.” (link)

Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is now threatening legal action against the NCAA, making that six state AGs to do so by Kennyhertz Perry attorney Mit Winter’s count. Yost’s statement comes after Cincinnati men’s basketball transfer Aziz Bandaogo was ruled ineligible despite “compelling evidence” that he qualified for a waiver, according to Yost. Part of Bandaogo’s desire to transfer was to be closer to his girlfriend’s family, which Yost notes has become Bandaogo’s “greatest support network” in the U.S., where he has no family of his own. Yost goes on to submit that not only is the NCAA’s decision “wrong as a matter of common sense and decency, it is also likely unlawful." He says it seems to violate antitrust laws and that, “in essence, the NCAA has imposed a sweeping, unilateral, one-year non-compete restriction, in violation of both state and federal law.” Full letter from Yost. Coaches Corner…
+ Louisville Women’s Basketball HC Jeff Walz believes sports gambling could help the sport. “Some like, some don't, but I think the more Vegas keeps putting lines on our games, the better. You want casual viewers. We have the women's basketball fans – it's can we get the casual sports viewer? Can we get somebody that's going to flip on the TV and see a women's basketball game and stay on? … I think Vegas helps with that.” Walz continues: “Back when we played UConn in the Final Four [in 2013], they're beating everybody by 30. But if you're in Vegas and you've got UConn -32, it's a two-point game, man. We got to get a stop and score.” (link)

Fox Sports President of Insights & Analytics Michael Mulvihill posits that the “last two years of football trends are a testament to the reach of broadcast. 100% of the growth of CFB is coming from broadcast. Meanwhile the NFL story since 2021 is TNF left broadcast and went down, MNF came back to broadcast and went up, FOX/CBS/NBC collectively are flat.” Crakes Media Principal Patrick Crakes adds: “What would be interesting to know is just how much of the CFB viewing increase came from Pay TV homes vs. strict OTA. The results might be surprising.” (link)

Undergraduate enrollment climbed by 2.1% this fall, its first total increase since 2020, according to data from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, which also shows that enrollment increases for Black, Latino and Asian students were by 2.2%, 4.4% and 4%, respectively. The bad news, however, is that freshman enrollment declined by 3.6%, nearly wiping out last year’s gain of 4.6% and leaving first-year enrollment less than a percentage point higher than it was in fall 2021. The declines were most pronounced for white students and at four-year institutions with lower acceptance rates, reversing years of growth trends for the most selective higher ed institutions. The report also indicates that female enrollment increased by 1.2% while male enrollment experienced a 2.2% uptick. (link)

Northwestern State has canceled the remainder of its football season due to the passing of junior safety Ronnie Caldwell. The school has also accepted the resignation of HC Brad Laird, who explains his decision to step down: “Due to the loss of Ronnie and the emotional burden it has caused me, I don’t feel I can give my all to these players or this program. Any coach will tell you that their players become like family, so the loss of Ronnie was like losing a son. I love this program and this university and I know it will persevere and move forward with the competitive spirit that is at the core of our DNA.” President Marcus Jones: “Ronnie was a beloved member of our community, and we miss him dearly. While our instinct was to return to the field of play following his death, we’ve since learned that the hurt on our team was too deep. Now it is in the best interest of our players, coaches, and staff to pause and to take this time to mourn, to heal, and to support Ronnie’s family.” (link)

A federal NIL bill is being held up by a debate over the NCAA’s definition of amateurism, according to Front Office Sports’ Amanda Christovich, who is told by an aide for one Democratic senator: “If this was just about NIL, you would have a bill.” Several GOP senators, including Ted Cruz (TX) and Tommy Tuberville (AL) have included language in their proposals that could prohibit schools from sharing revenue with student-athletes. They also contend student-athletes do not want to be employees. Meanwhile, several Democratic lawmakers, including Cory Booker (NJ), Chris Murphy (CT) and Richard Blumenthal (CT) oppose such language. Christovich adds: A federal agency overseeing NIL is ‘not going to fly with most Republicans,’ one of the aides said. But an antitrust exemption likely wouldn’t fly with most Democrats, as it would be another method the NCAA could use to stamp out legal attempts at getting athletes employment rights. There isn’t even bipartisan agreement that Congress should act. The Democratic aide suggested that it’s unclear to them whether there’s enough of a problem with NIL right now for Congress to step in.” (link)

San Jose State AD Jeff Konya says he’d eventually like to transform the grassy berm on the east side of CEFCU Stadium into loge seating. Konya estimates the project would cost upwards of $11M. As it stands now, the berm seating can be tricky given the steep slope of the area. “So, I hope the grass seating is not something that we’re going to have to live with several years from now. … With this SAC (Spartan Athletics Center) building coming on, we have some premium opportunities but not quite enough, and that's why I'm really interested in that grassy area. I think we can create some more premium opportunities, and I think that's what a lot of our sports fans these days want to see is to have access to these premium opportunities to take in a game. And that’s not just seating. I wouldn’t just put aluminum bleachers in there. That’s not what I'm talking about. What I'm talking about are big seats with maybe some enhanced experience in terms of access to amenities. It’s a little bit easier, but something like that I think would really translate well for that space, and if we can't get there, then I would just say we keep the grassy berm because I'm not interested in doing something subpar.” More from Konya on future facility opportunities. Oklahoma State will unveil the Boone Pickens Legacy Experience inside the Boone Pickens Stadium’s West End Zone complex in 2024. The project will feature interactive exhibits showcasing his life and accomplishments. Former Cowboys AD Mike Holder will drive a replica of Pickens’ 1955 Ford station wagon in this year’s homecoming parade, which will serve as a preview of the experience and says: "It symbolizes Boone's humble beginnings, hard work and tenacity to overcome hurdles to become one of America's most outstanding entrepreneurs and generous philanthropists. His impact on Oklahoma State is immeasurable, and it is most appropriate his legacy will be forever enshrined in the stadium we named in honor of his record-setting gifts to athletics." (link)

NCAA enforcement staffers have been on the Michigan campus this week as part of the sign-stealing investigation, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports, adding: “A source confirmed to ESPN that the NCAA has begun to search the electronics of Michigan football staff members, which was first reported by The Detroit News. ESPN reported last week that the NCAA had immediate interest in Stalions' computer, and it appears the scope of the NCAA's interest has expanded. … The time frame of the NCAA's investigation is uncertain, but multiple people familiar with NCAA investigation timelines have told ESPN that it's logistically impossible for the Michigan case to play out before the end of the football season.” (link)

Attorneys for former Michigan State Football HC Mel Tucker and Brenda Tracy have agreed on an order limiting what cell phone information can be released, USA Today’s Matt Mencarini reports. Specifically, the order prevents the release of health information about sexual assault, harassment or gender discrimination victims. The order also bars the release of information that would identify sexual assault survivors or the identities of people who may have had a romantic or sexual relationship with either Tracy or Tucker. Additional instructions relate to the destruction of materials in certain email or DropBox accounts on the phone but includes a provision that Tracy preserve such information as possible evidence. Finally, the order indicates that "any data images of the phone" will be destroyed and no additional text messages between Tracy and her friend Ahlan Alvarado will be disclosed unless ordered by the court. ESPN’s Shwetha Surendran and Paula Lavigne pen a lengthy, data-guided look into Power 5 promotional inequity and found that during the five years leading up to February 2023, 55 athletic departments tweeted about men’s teams more often than women’s teams. “Notre Dame tweeted about women the least – 18.6% of the time. Even those schools that favored women's teams only tweeted about them a little more often than 50% of the time.” They add: “Title IX requires equal publicity of men's and women's teams, regardless of success. But according to ESPN's analysis, the athletic departments that post about women's teams more often typically have successful women's programs (see: Texas volleyball, South Carolina women's basketball, Florida State softball), furthering a perception that those teams earned the attention.” Of the 18 Power 5 athletic departments whose men’s and women’s basketball teams both made the 2023 NCAA Tournament, nine tweeted about their men’s teams more often during the regular season. Of the 17 P5s whose women’s hoops team made the tournament but whose men’s team did not, nine tweeted more often about the men’s team during the regular season.” Also from Surendran and Lavigne: “While most schools have dropped ‘Lady’ from their mascot, and others have updated their handles since ESPN's analysis, some team Twitter handles still designate their women's team with a ‘W’ or "women," without a corresponding ‘M’ or ‘men's’ designation for the men. … As of February 2023,19 schools in the Power 5 did not designate a gender for their men’s basketball Twitter handle but used a ‘W’ or similar designation for their women’s hoops team. Lots more. (link)

UCF QB John Rhys Plumlee explains to the Orlando Sentinel’s Matt Murschel why he has joined Athletes.org as an ambassador: “When I first started college in 2019, there was no NIL, so when it came out, it was craziness right there. People didn’t know what to make of it and didn’t know the rules and regulations behind it. Luckily, I had people that approached me who understood what was happening and what was to come. But the reality of it was that’s not the reality for every college athlete. Not a lot of kids and not a lot of college athletes get the wisdom that I had from people who knew what they were talking about. … [AO is] going to be an unbelievable resource for years to come. It’s going to be a good space for athletes to be able to ask questions safely.” (link)

Well this is an eye-opener: The U.S. GDP grew at an annualized rate of 4.9% during the third quarter despite interest rates reaching their highest level in the last 22 years. The growth was well above the Q2’s 2.1% pace and faster than economists’ expectations of a 4.3% rate. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen: “It’s a good, strong number and it shows an economy that’s doing very well. Let’s remember that it is just one quarter’s number and I’m not expecting growth at that pace to continue,” particularly in the face of the resumption of student loan repayments and soaring bond yields.
