UTSA students voted against increasing the athletics fee by a tally of 4,168 (70.66%) to 1,730 (29.33%). Roadrunners AD Lisa Campos: “I want to thank all the students who voted in this referendum. Your voice is important, and we appreciate your involvement. I don’t believe this was a vote against athletics. In fact, we see more and more students coming to our games and supporting our teams. For many, this was a financial issue. Cost of attendance is top of mind for many of our students and we respect that. Our desire is to make the value of a UTSA degree even greater, and we will continue to do our part to support the success of our students and graduates.” (link)

Wisconsin announces the public launch of the $75M Building Champions campaign to support funding for a new football indoor practice facility project. Alumni Ted and Mary Kellner have provided a leadership gift of $20M to the campaign, which so far has raised $47M. Badgers AD Chris McIntosh: "The new football indoor practice facility will be transformational for not only our football student-athletes but for all of Wisconsin Athletics and we are so thankful to Ted and Mary for their tremendous support of this project. It demonstrates our commitment to competing for championships and winning on and off the field. Badger student-athletes will reap the benefits of this state-of-the-art facility for decades to come and I am excited to see construction begin." The project’s total estimated cost is $285M. (link)

The Women's Basketball Committee met in Cleveland this week to review planning efforts for the upcoming season. The committee voted to update one of the principles for placing teams into the NCAA Tournament bracket, with the No. 1 overall seeded team being assigned to a regional pod with game days on Friday and Sunday. The decision will reward the overall top-seeded team by ensuring it has the most possible rest time between the regional final and Women's Final Four. Additionally, the committee supported continuing the requirement to use a shot clock showing tenths of a second for regional and Women's Final Four games only, since those are predetermined sites. During the First Four and first- and second-round bid process for the 2024 championship, prospective hosts will indicate if they have the tenth-of-a-second shot clock and if they use it during the regular season. Once that information is gathered, the committee will review whether all prospective hosts have the tenth-of-a-second shot clock before determining whether to uniformly institute it at all championship sites. Full recap. (link)

The NCAA Women’s Basketball national championship game will not be played in primetime and will instead be contested on ABC at 3 PM ET on Sunday, April 7, 2024. The Final Four matchups will be played at 7 and 9:30 PM on Friday, April 5, on ESPN. Awful Announcing’s Ben Axelrod: “After this year’s NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament drew record ratings, and with the prospect of superstars like Angel Reese and/or Caitlin Clark once again reaching the title game, many had speculated that the 2024 National Championship Game could be played in primetime. … Even beyond the individual stars, it’s clear there’s a growing appetite for the women’s game, as evidenced by the recent WNBA Playoffs ratings. Considering that the date of last season’s championship game featured little in terms of competition, it’s curious that ESPN wouldn’t maximize the potential eyeballs on what is suddenly one of its hottest commodities.” (link)

The NIT Board of Managers has announced changes to how teams will qualify for this season’s tournament. Specifically, conference regular season champions that do not win their conference tournament or are not otherwise selected to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament will not receive an automatic bid to the NIT. Instead, the NIT will guarantee two teams based on the NET rankings from each of Power 6 leagues (Power 5 + Big East). The top two teams in the NET rankings not qualifying for the NCAA tourney from each conference, regardless of won-loss record, will be selected. Additionally, the 12 teams automatically selected will be guaranteed the opportunity to host a game in the first round of the NIT. Once the 12 AQ schools have been selected, the NIT Committee will select the 20 best teams available to complete the tournament’s 32-team field. NCAA SVP of Basketball/NIT Board Chair Dan Gavitt: “The postseason college basketball landscape is becoming more competitive for teams that don’t qualify for March Madness. The change to the selection process for the 2024 NIT is a necessary effort to evolve this historic tournament in a dynamic event marketplace.” The 2024 NIT will also use a 16-foot lane consistent with FIBA and the NBA. Michigan supporter & Committee on Infractions member Jim Stapleton releases a statement after his name was linked with providing the NCAA with evidence of sign-stealing due to a grudge with Wolverines Football HC Jim Harbaugh. In part from Stapleton: “My late, great father once told me ‘never get in an argument with someone who has no idea what they are talking about, because if someone is watching or reading, they may not be able to tell which one of you is the fool.’ I have always tried to follow that advice and it’s been particularly helpful when dealing with [notable journalist John] Bacon and his multiple misrepresentations of me over the years. Yet, in this case, he has taken the definition of ‘yellow journalism’ to an entire different level. This will be my only comment on the matter. But, it won’t be the last time Bacon deals with the scurrilous nature of his latest actions because he will soon hear from my lawyer.” (link)

The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner wonders whether the Pac-12’s new Pac-12 Networks studio in San Ramon is an asset or a liability moving forward. The answer may be difficult to determine with so few details having been publicly disclosed but Wilner explains why the move was necessary in the first place: “While examining the Pac-12’s contract with Kilroy Realty during his early months in office, [Commissioner George] Kliavkoff was stunned to discover the deal expired in the summer of 2023 — one year before the end of the Pac-12 Networks’ distribution contracts with Comcast, DISH, etc.” As for whether the studio is an asset or liability, it depends on the future of the league itself. “If Washington State and Oregon State opt to rebuild the conference, the production studio could be used to broadcast their events. Perhaps a media company (hello, Apple) would be interested in subleasing the space and equipment. Or buying it outright. … Maybe the infrastructure could be used by the Mountain West Conference in its next media contract cycle (2026) following a merger with Washington State and Oregon State.” On the other hand, Wilner estimates the multiyear lease will cost upwards of $1.5M annually. “As with so much else about the Pac-12, the future of the San Ramon production facility is complicated, and undetermined.” (link)
