Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark reportedly visited recently with Gonzaga Men’s Basketball HC Mark Few in Spokane. Per Gonzaga Nation’s Cole Forsman: “There are a lot of financial implications to sort out on both sides, and there's no timetable for when everything will be sorted out. If talks advance far enough that the Big 12 members come together to vote on the Bulldogs, they would need at least 75% of the league to vote ‘yes.’ Timing is important here — if a vote came before June 30, 2024, then the Zags would need nine of the 12 schools' approval. If the vote comes after the four former Pac-12 schools officially join the league on July 1, then 12 of the 16 members would have to approve.” (link)

Extra Points purveyor Matt Brown: “Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez told me today she *also* is not a fan of the changes to the NIT, particularly the idea of giving autobids to members of ‘P6’ leagues, a practice that she told me feels more about rewarding brands than rewarding merit. She also added that despite the new format, she feels confident that MWC teams will be able to compete for and earn at-large selections in the NIT.” (link)
|
Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly on the same topic: “I can directly state this decision was made by the NIT Board and was NOT managed through the NCAA governance structure. Therefore, as a member of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee and NCAA Council, I can assure you the NIT Board decision was made without our opinion, nor our vote. [...] The decision by the NIT Board will cause new postseason opportunities to be created that will compete with the NIT for teams. I have gone on record in support of expanding the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships and thus eliminating the NIT events managed by the NCAA. I will strongly support a review by the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee and the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee to expand the NCAA Division I Basketball Championships in an effort to supersede new events being created and the NCAA Basketball brand to grow stronger under the ‘NCAA Basketball Championships’ umbrella.” (link)

Florida State will adjust ticket prices to help pay for the planned $265M in renovations to Doak Campbell Stadium and not all fans are excited about the cost they’ll incur. One fan, Mike Harrison, says it will cost him $80K to purchase six club seats in the area near his current seats (price includes a one-time contribution fee of $10,000 per seat and $3,250 per seat cost, which includes booster fee), which is "sticker shock" compared to the cost of Harrison's four seats this season ($2,700 - $3,500 per ticket plus $325 booster fee per ticket). Harrison: “We've enjoyed and loved attending games for years and have been Florida State fans through and through, to the core. I understand revenue is important in college athletics. But I believe the price increase from one year to the next is just so astronomical.” Seminoles AD Alford: “The overall response has reflected what the survey revealed – our people enthusiastically endorse us creating an enhanced game experience. These projects always present multiple challenges and trying to please everyone is one of those.” (link)

Penry Advisors founder Jason Penry joins Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz to dive into the rise of the mega gift and its impact on capital campaigns. Penry, whose fundraising experience includes stops at Texas A&M, Arkansas State and Oklahoma State, shares insights from his independent research into the largest gifts in the history of college athletics, explains the differences between soliciting major gifts in athletics vs. academics, and offers tips for landing major gifts. Penry notes that in the span of just 10 years, the definition of mega gift has changed from $30M to $450M. In examining Texas A&M’s $4.25B fundraising campaign, Penry observes: “You really see that big gifts matter, and you really understand that one or two gifts can really mean the difference between a successful capital campaign or facility campaign and an unsuccessful one. … We found that there were just over 40 gifts of $20M or more in the history of college athletics, so we looked at those 40 gifts,” and roughly 25 had occurred over the last 10 years. “So, this trend of big gifts and donors concentrating their influence, their gifts is really a thing not only in higher education in general, but also in athletics.” Full Q&A on Connect. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz has the full rundown of football coaching bonuses from this week, but here are the top earners, all of whom earned the extra cash because of bowl eligibility, unless otherwise noted: UCLA HC Chip Kelly ($125K which includes $25K for the sixth win and $100K for bowl appearance); Kansas HC Lance Leipold ($100K); Tennessee HC Josh Heupel ($100K); Oklahoma State HC Mike Gundy ($62,500); and Kansas State HC Chris Klieman joins Troy HC Jon Sumrall in the $50K group. Additionally, Louisville HC Jeff Brohm triggered an automatic one-year contract extension for the Cardinals seventh win of the year. (link)

Duke dropped a game at Louisville yesterday, but the Blue Devils are surging under HC Mike Elko. Duke AD Nina King on the challenge of retaining Elko: “I’m glad other people are excited about his coaching ability, but we intend to keep him at Duke for a long time. He tells me what he needs and I tell him what we can do, and we’ll continue to work on building that program. It’s no secret: Football needs to be good.” More from Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde. JohnCanzano.com’s namesake provides a behind-the-scenes look at how Portland State’s video of President Ann Cudd working out with the football team went viral. Former Vikings staffer Cory Hansen, now the Director of Brand at Sport Oregon, first pitched the idea to PSU and expected a rejection, but Cudd was immediately into the idea. Hansen: “We were surprised at the level of commitment. She didn’t have to scream after the deadlift and make all the faces. She didn’t have to put on the pads and we were certainly surprised she was so willing to show up on a Saturday and run on the field.” Film producers had expected just a handful of student-athletes to volunteer to be in the background of the video’s workout scene, but when the whole team showed up, Vikings HC Bruce Barnum said: “Sorry, this is all we could get.” Canzano cites Cudd’s willingness as an example of how she understands the importance of athletics to the university’s mission. Barnum adds: “She’s talking (football) stadium. She’s talking athletics — period. That hasn’t been done around here in a few moons. Since Pokey Allen, probably. It’s good to see that. It’s good to see that interest.” (link); Here’s the full (awesome) video in case you missed it. (link)

+ The Big 12 announces the launch of Big 12 Nation, a weekly show on SiriusXM Big 12 Radio that will showcase the Conference’s Olympic Sports. Big 12 Nation will include game highlights, student-athlete interviews, and in-depth coverage of all the action taking place across the Big 12. Commissioner Yormark: “As the popularity of Olympic Sports continues to grow, it’s critically important that our media platforms and their coverage grow alongside them. We are thrilled to work with SiriusXM to bolster coverage of Olympic Sports through Big 12 Nation – our student-athletes have incredible stories and successes on and off the field, and we look forward to those being told.” (link)

NIT Reactions…
+ MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher: “I am surprised and disappointed in the action announced today by the NIT Board of Managers. To make such a substantive change to the NIT Structure without providing a satisfactory explanation or building the foundations of such a change is troubling and leaves student-athletes, coaches and fans in a state of uncertainty.” (link)
+ Big Sky boss Tom Wistrcill: “My friend, Commissioner Steinbrecher, summarizes my feelings on this very well. Disappointed and concerned in the decision and the timing.” (link)
+ Ivy League Executive Director Robin Harris: “Finding this out 10 days before the start of the college basketball season is surprising and disappointing. There was no opportunity for discussion or feedback. Taking away access for conference champions dilutes the magic of March. This isn’t the way this is supposed to work.” (link)
+ Patriot League Commissioner Jennifer Heppel: “Disappointing decision from NCAA. Denying any conference automatic access to any NCAA sponsored/managed championship is a slippery slope.” (link)
+ College of Charleston AD Matt Roberts: “So instead of celebrating a postseason event that traditionally allows for diversity, inclusion and opportunity consistent with its “values” this group unilaterally decides to minimize the ‘little guys’ in favor of money and mediocrity. I’m embarrassed for our industry today. Not to mention that most of the ‘P6’ schools that are selected to participate either don’t want to be there and/or have players opt out. Why give the advantaged even more of an advantage. Troubling and disappointing.” (link)
+ Cleveland State AD Scott Garrett: “How does this happen with ZERO heads up or shared governance input from impacted constituents? Ridiculous.” (link)

Realignment Rumblings from Extra Points’ Matt Brown…
+ Could both Merrimack and Sacred Heart remain in the NEC for football? NEC Senior Assoc. Commissioner for PR/Digital Media/TV Ron Ratner tells Brown: “While associate member applications are evaluated on a case-by-case basis, historical precedent shows that members who have withdrawn from the NEC have not been approved to return as associates.”
+ With that option looking unlikely, Brown identifies the Big South and CAA as potential landing spots. If those don’t work out, it’s possible the Patriot League makes sense. While the CAA may seem counterintuitive given its current size, Brown points out that, in fact, the league may look to expand even further. Fairfield and High Point are non-football options, and Brown explains there is a fear in the CAA that it could lose members.
+ “Multiple ADs and industry professionals familiar with and around the league have told me over the last month that they expect the College of Charleston to leave the CAA and join the A10 after the end of this college basketball season.”
+ “Delaware, I’m told, has communicated a displeasure with the current direction of the league to CAA officials, and would explore an FBS opportunity if one presented itself.”
+ As for the NEC, Brown cites New Haven (DII) as an obvious expansion candidate, but “I’ve been told that other NE-10 schools that sometimes get mentioned in these things, like Bentley, Adelphi, and Southern New Hampshire, are not considered to be likely D-I reclassification candidates at this exact moment.”
+ More from Brown, including thoughts on Dayton and VCU as potential AAC candidates. (link)

It’s Personnel…

In what looks like a spot for Mizzen & Main, Texas A&M AD Ross Bjork on striking a balance between the demands of being a parent and an AD: “Being in a small town, a college town people are going to recognize you as the AD, and so when you walk in the room or an event with your kids, I make sure I say I'm Paxton's dad or I'm Payton's dad, not I'm Ross Bjork the athletic director. It’s really a blend of lifestyle between your job and your family, and if you don't have that kind of balance then you probably will drive yourself crazy. I'm going to schedule my kids' activities, they're on my calendar. If there's an A&M event and a kids’ event at the same time, I'll be at the kids’ event, my son's event first. Maybe I have to leave a little bit early to make that A&M event but I've got to be there. My number one job is dad and husband and so keeping that in perspective is something that we schedule and we prioritize.” (link)

The parents of late Northwestern State Football student-athlete Ronald Caldwell Jr. indicate they may file lawsuits against the university, former HC Brad Laird & the apartment complex where Caldwell Jr. was shot. A member of the Caldwell family’s legal team: “I’ve never seen a school cancel a season and a coach resign because of something like this. This is a strange situation. There are a lot of unanswered questions, so we want to get to the bottom of this.” More on the events that led to Caldwell Jr.’s passing. (link)

A former Division III football coach, on the condition of anonymity, told ESPN that suspended Michigan football staffer Connor Stalions paid him a “couple hundred dollars” to attend three Big Ten games during the past two years to record the sideline of a future Wolverines opponent. He was wary, but said that ultimately “I didn't like it, but it's a gray line. You can call me naive, but no one is reading the bylaws. I'm not a contractual lawyer. ... I just felt like if you're not doing it, you're not trying to get ahead.” According to the coach, Stalions paid him roughly $1K to cover his travel expenses and pay for his time from a personal Venmo account. The Athletic’s Jim Trotter examines how Jackson State and the SWAC are moving on from former Football HC Deion Sanders, and Alabama State HC Eddie Robinson, Jr. remarks: “Deion did a lot of good for the SWAC and a lot of good for Jackson State, but he probably did a little (of) bad, too. There are some things he could have done better; I’m sure he would probably say that, too. In the big picture, I think he kind of benefited the conference more than he hurt it. But now with (JSU) being the defending champ, everybody wants to play them hard and try to beat them. That’s just how it goes.” While Sanders’ legacy in Jackson will likely be debated for years to come, Trotter notes there are some who took exception with Coach Prime’s remarks that God directed him to JSU. “That language might be inconsequential to some, but in the Bible Belt, among a heavily Black population, its meaning can transcend football.” Lots more from Trotter. Check out renderings of the soon-to-be renovated University Club of Alabama, which will be located inside what was at one time the state’s Governor’s Mansion within walking distance of Bryant-Denny Stadium. The new club is being created in partnership with Invited and will serve not only as a place for social gatherings, but also as an “an immersive educational experience for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors alike,” according to Business of College Sports’ Alexandria Sanatore. U.S. Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA) have introduced the Stop Campus Hazing Act, which would require colleges and universities to educate students about the dangers of hazing and give parents and students more information about which on-campus student organizations have a history of hazing incidents. Higher ed institutions also would have to list hazing incidents in their annual crime reports. Klobuchar: “When parents send their kids away to college, they expect they will get a good education and make new friends. Unfortunately, hazing is a dangerous – and at times deadly – reality, and we must work to end it. Our bipartisan legislation will improve hazing prevention efforts on college campuses as well as reporting of hazing incidents to make sure we have the information we need to stop this abuse and keep students safe.” Similar legislation has been introduced in the House.
