Michigan Football HC Jim Harbaugh told reporters today he "wouldn't say that's accurate" when he was asked if a contract offer was withdrawn. He added it is against policy to talk about ongoing contract negotiations. When asked about the ongoing sign-stealing allegations and whether he should’ve been aware of what purportedly happened, Harbaugh responded: “We’re in an onward mode. It’s a one-track mind that I’m modeling and I see it throughout the program. I was forthright in the statement right away.” (link)

While NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt acknowledges women’s basketball has the “greatest value” among the championship rights bundled in the NCAA’s media rights package with ESPN, former ESPN VP of Programming and Acquisitions Carol Stiff worries about what that will mean for the other sports in the bundle. “I’m not in favor of breaking up the bundle. Not only do you have the crown jewel in women’s basketball, but look at the growth of the other sports – softball, volleyball, gymnastics. All of that comes into play. And not just women’s sports either – look at what the NCAA and ESPN have done together in baseball and lacrosse, just to name a couple. This is about assigning a value for comparison purposes – the value for the whole is much stronger together. Let’s say you take women’s basketball out of it and those rights go somewhere else besides ESPN, what happens then? Who’s going to do for those championships what ESPN has done, not just in the championships, but in the regular season as well. Do not undervalue the thousands of hours produced on ABC/ESPN networks.” (link)

SBJ’s Ben Portnoy chronicles the Big East’s journey to reinvent itself without football, and Commissioner Val Ackerman recalls: “This was, I think, the first time that I really felt the urgency and the full weight of that leadership chair. And I was really ready for it.” Following a series of departures from football-playing schools, former Villanova AD Vince Nicastro explains the “Catholic 7” said to themselves they were “going to figure out how to add a few more schools to the portfolio here, and then we’re going to go out and see what the market can bear.” After negotiations with ESPN fell through, Nicastro remarks that it was “providential, so to speak, that Fox was about to launch FS1, and in 2013 the Big East and Fox Sports agreed to a 12-year deal worth $500M. Portnoy: “To call Ackerman’s undertaking herculean is almost underselling it,” and Ackerman confirms that when she came aboard, “we had no website. We had no checking account – Georgetown was managing our finances until I hired a CFO and we got [JP Morgan Chase] to give us a checking account. We had no benefits plan, so everybody I was hiring, I was promising benefits to.” Would the Big East ever go back and sponsor football again? Ackerman: “I can’t see them – especially the ones that were here 10 years ago – wanting to relive what was unfolding for the Big East during that stretch. … It was just an absolute circus.” More. JohnCanzano.com’s eponymous publisher reports Washington State and Oregon State are “dragging their feet” on a potential scheduling partnership with the Mountain West for 2024-25. “That's the perception, anyway. The Pac-2 appears to want to examine both plans before it chooses.” The other path Canzano is referring to involves working with Gridiron Founder/President Dave Brown on building out 12-game schedules. “That said, OSU and WSU need to announce the football plan for 2024 in front of the opening of the Dec. 4 football transfer-portal window. It can’t wait beyond that. In all the other Pac-2 sports… keep an eye on the respective NCAA transfer-portal windows. They are the guide. I expect to see the announcement of the plan for women’s soccer first. The soccer portal opens on November 13.” (link)

Eastern Michigan has received a $1M commitment from alumni Maxx and Rachel Crosby to support Phase Two of the Championship Building Plan. In recognition of the gift, EMU will name the football playing surface inside Rynearson Stadium after Maxx Crosby, who currently plays for the Las Vegas Raiders. (link)

Stanford has yet to officially recognize the Lifetime Cardinal collective amid concerns about what doing so would mean for Title IX, and Allen Thorpe, the collective’s founder, is taking steps to assuage those concerns. For example, former Cardinal QB Andrew Luck and his wife, former Cardinal gymnast Nicole Pechanec, established the collective’s first support for Stanford women earlier this year by sponsoring the current freshmen gymnasts. Lifetime Cardinal also offers support for the women’s basketball team. Luck: “We very much believe in excellence across all 36 sports at this university. I believe it as a football player, (Pechanec) believes that as a gymnast, and we can all support each other. Certainly a robust football team that’s winning supports excellence in every other sport. It’s also important for us to look at, we love gymnastics, how can I support it? We love women’s hoops, how can we support it? … It might look different for every team.” More. (link)

The NFL “sent a strongly worded cease-and-desist letter” to Houston to stop the Cougars from further use of the Houston Oilers’ trademarked ‘Luv Ya Blue’ uniform. The Houston Chronicle’s Joseph Duarte: “An attorney for the NFL threatened legal action if the university did not immediately stop what the league described as UH’s “blatant copying” of the Oilers-inspired throwback jerseys. It also demanded that the university discontinue all sales of merchandise and remove any promotional campaign or social media posts that feature the popular light blue, or Columbia blue, with red stripes color scheme and design.” Rice also wore Oilers-inspired uniforms during a game last month but has yet to receive a cease-and-desist. UH Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs Dona Cornell says she disagrees with the NFL’s assertions but conveyed the school’s commitment not to continue the use of the jersey. (link)

Iowa Football OC Brian Ferentz will not return to the team next season. Hawkeyes Interim AD Beth Goetz: “After conversations with head coach Kirk Ferentz, coach Brian Ferentz and President Wilson, I informed Brian that our intention is for him to be with us through the bowl game, but this is his last season with the program. Making this known today is in the best interest of the program and its loyal fans; it provides clarity during this pivotal time in the schedule. It is not my practice to be involved in assistant coaching decisions and certainly not to make public such a change during a season. Our priority is to put our student-athletes in the best position to have both short-term and long-term success, on and off the field.” (link, link)

UMass Lowell women’s basketball student-athletes Alex Gitchenko and Ella Ner, both of whom are from Israel, talk with The Messenger’s Jeff Goodman about how they’re balancing their responsibilities as student-athletes with their concern over the bloodletting in their homeland. Nerr says her older brother is among those on the front line attempting to rescue the 200 hostages taken by Hamas. “I don’t know where he is now. I think his unit moved, but I worry all day, every day.” Gitchenko, who spent two years in the Israeli army after high school, tells Goodman she struggles to call home because of the guilt she feels being so far away. “My first week [after the attacks], I couldn’t speak with my mom because she started to cry. She was happy I was away, and she couldn’t understand how hard it was for me when the only thing I wanted was to be with my family in this situation. I didn’t want to talk to her. It was too hard for me.” Both players explain that it is a common occurrence to hear rockets overhead and have 45 seconds to make it to a shelter room. Ner: “You’d grab your phone, close the doors, sit next to the wall furthest from the door, close the windows and you would hear the bomb. When it’s over, you sit there for another two minutes and then go back out.” More from Goodman. (link)

In a first for the school, Fairleigh Dickinson inks an agreement to broadcast six men’s and two women’s basketball games on the YES Network and YES app this season. Knights AD Bradford Hurlbut: “After our men's basketball team captivated the nation during March Madness and our women's basketball program reached the WNIT for the second-straight season, we're thrilled to seize the moment and highlight our exceptional student-athletes, coaches and institution on a network with the prestige of YES.” (link)

Several Colorado football student-athletes claim they had jewelry stolen from their locker room at the Rose Bowl during Saturday’s loss to UCLA. The Bruins subsequently confirmed to OutKick that “a report was filed to the Pasadena Police Department following the UCLA-Colorado football game regarding items that were reportedly missing from the Colorado locker room. UCLA is in communication with law enforcement, Rose Bowl Stadium officials and the University of Colorado on the matter.” Some players mentioned having their chains stolen but it has yet to be determined precisely how much was taken. + Northern Michigan has completed renovations to the Berry Events Center in time for hockey season. The $6.5M project reduced the rink’s size from 100 feet wide to 94 feet wide, and Wildcats AD Rick Comley explains: “The Olympic-size ice has always been a challenge. The narrower ice is more attractive to incoming players. It adds two things to the sport of hockey: more contact and more goals, and those are two things that hockey fans like.” (link)
+ More than 200 Northwestern faculty members "have signed a faculty senate resolution" calling on the school to "answer outstanding questions over the financing" of its projected $800M Ryan Field renovation project. So far, the funding is only partially covered by a $480M gift from donors Patrick and Shirley Ryan, leaving much of the remaining bill to be “funded by increased Northwestern debt,” per the faculty.
