MIAA Commissioner Mike Racy expresses his disappointment, but is not defeated, with the opposition to Week 0 Football legislation by the DII Management Council. With five of the 14 DII FB conferences sponsoring the proposal, “I think it’s wise for your governing bodies to maybe sit on the sideline and let the membership debate and make that decision.” On the Council’s suggestion that extending the season by one week may be preferable to starting earlier, Racy points out the multitude of logistical challenges with championships and postseason that would need to take place, concluding, “Go ahead and start working on that, but until that happens, put Week 0 in place because the flexibility and the health and safety of football student-athletes is too important to wait.” Looking ahead to the NCAA Convention in Phoenix, Racy is confident FB members support the measure and the fact that it is permissive and not required, adding: “Too often, our division gets fired up about competitive equity issues and some of these cost issues and I think we’ve seen from some of the trouble that Division I has found themselves in trying to legislate around competitive equity or trying to keep people back because of cost-related issues often times leads to not just membership problems, but sometimes legal issues.” (link)

NSIC representatives spent the latter part of last week on the campus of Jamestown (NAIA) as the league explores adding a 16th member. Commissioner Erin Lind: "In my position, I have the opportunity to talk with leaders of all the other Division II conferences in the country. And in our talks, I hear often about their struggles. And when I hear about the struggles of smaller conferences, it's about scheduling and resources and all the issues that might arise because you're a smaller conference. I don't think that's a place our league wants to go.” UJ President Polly Peterson says the third DII invite may be the charm: “If you want to go way back we’ve been preparing for a time when we would be ready and when Upper Iowa left we said this is the time, we’ve done what we needed to do. We’ve invested in our programs and our facility and our coaching staff and our transportation." (link, link)

While NCAA SVP of Basketball Dan Gavitt acknowledges women’s basketball has the “greatest value” among the championship rights bundled in the NCAA’s media rights package with ESPN, former ESPN VP of Programming and Acquisitions Carol Stiff worries about what that will mean for the other sports in the bundle. “I’m not in favor of breaking up the bundle. Not only do you have the crown jewel in women’s basketball, but look at the growth of the other sports – softball, volleyball, gymnastics. All of that comes into play. And not just women’s sports either – look at what the NCAA and ESPN have done together in baseball and lacrosse, just to name a couple. This is about assigning a value for comparison purposes – the value for the whole is much stronger together. Let’s say you take women’s basketball out of it and those rights go somewhere else besides ESPN, what happens then? Who’s going to do for those championships what ESPN has done, not just in the championships, but in the regular season as well. Do not undervalue the thousands of hours produced on ABC/ESPN networks.” (link) 

Minnesota State Mankato announces a five-plus year partnership with Mayo Clinic Health System that will provide sideline athletic training coverage for football and hockey, 450 hours for other event coverage and injury evaluation and more as part of a “comprehensive sports medicine portfolio that will provide coaches and student-athletes holistic healthcare support.” The deal that will see Mayo Clinic become the Orthopedics and Sports Medicine provider for the Mavericks is valued at over $4M, with more than $2.5M in cash and sponsorship investments and over $1.5M  in orthopedic physician coverage and services. AD Kevin Buisman: "It doesn't get much better than aligning Minnesota State Athletics with one of the most recognizable brand names in the medical industry. This immediately further elevates the perception of our program and speaks volumes about our commitment to success. The U.S. GDP grew at an annualized rate of 4.9% during the third quarter despite interest rates reaching their highest level in the last 22 years. The growth was well above the Q2’s 2.1% pace and faster than economists’ expectations of a 4.3% rate. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen: “It’s a good, strong number and it shows an economy that’s doing very well. Let’s remember that it is just one quarter’s number and I’m not expecting growth at that pace to continue,” particularly in the face of the resumption of student loan repayments and soaring bond yields.
