Michigan rescinded an offer to extend Football HC Jim Harbaugh’s contract, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Rachel Bachman and Andrew Beaton, who cite a “person familiar with the matter.” (link); However, bestselling author/prominent Michigan observer John U. Bacon reports: “People involved in the decision tell me this is not accurate.” ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg adds: “Since this is out there tonight, here's what we're hearing about Jim Harbaugh's contract situation: Sources said a contract push accelerated the week of Oct. 8, but things changed once the NCAA investigation launched. A source told ESPN’s Tom VanHaaren Harbaugh was instructed not to sign yet. The situation is more on hold pending the NCAA review, which makes sense, but before that, Michigan was set to move forward. Athletic director Warde Manuel told me Oct. 10 that the school hoped to have something soon, echoing his comments to The Detroit News.” (link, link)

In the leadup to last year’s College Football Playoff semifinals, Ohio State asked the NCAA whether it was permissible to have staff members attend the other semifinal to scout future opponents? Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger: “The unreported inquiry seemed quite innocuous at the time. And, yet, it ignited back-and-forth dialogue between the CFP and NCAA over the policy and eventually triggered an unpublicized change to the CFP bylaws.” CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock: “We didn’t have a policy, and we operated without one until the question was raised. … We just followed the NCAA policy that allowed scouting in postseason tournaments.” Roughly four months later the CFP governing board implemented a new policy making in-person scouting of playoff games impermissible. Northwestern State QB Tyler Vander Waal takes issue with the school’s decision to cancel the remainder of the football season and argues the university is using the passing of student-athlete Ronnie Caldwell Jr. as a “cop-out. The lack of leadership was evident. As much as I respect Coach Laird as a coach and a man, he didn’t have any control of this team. As players we were kept in the dark about everything. The decision-makers here thought it was a good idea to cancel the season and take away the only structure we had? They thought it would be smart to take away these players’ outlets during a time of grief? Where we got to be together and have fun and play the game we love? … No, I fully believe there was more to this decision that we will never know. This was just an easy way to get out of things. Most, if not all, of the players in that locker room wanted to play the last four games. They didn’t consider the players in this decision and they failed us as athletes.” (link)

AthleticDirectorU publisher Jason Belzer details how it has been “especially painful to have observed the increasingly shocking views that have been expressed by many professionals that I know within college athletics and the greater sports industry” following the Hamas attacks on Israel. “Whether on X or LinkedIn, my timelines are full of declarations claiming that Israel was at fault for what happened, that its retaliation against Hamas unjust, and that it is in fact the Jews that are committing the atrocities.” Meanwhile, “countless individuals have either chosen to stay silent, refused to condemn the actions of the terrorists…or in some instances outright sided with them. It is difficult to understand how an industry that has set an example for diversity, equity and inclusion, has so quickly shown nothing but silence to the co-workers and student-athletes within their campus communities that now fear for their own safety. [...] Neither I, nor any Jew, seeks our colleagues’ thoughts and prayers. We do not seek for you take arms up against those that threaten our way of life. We simply ask that you not stand by and remain silent against the hate and anger that the world has directed towards a people who for millennia have sought nothing more than to live their lives in peace.” (link)

Neither Oklahoma AD Joe Castiglione nor Oklahoma State AD Chad Weiberg are willing to close the door on the Bedlam football series, but as of now there are no concrete plans regarding its future. Castiglione tells The Oklahoman’s Joe Mussatto: “I believe at some point it'll come back around. And if one were to ask why, the answer is: because it makes sense. We can hold onto the emotions all you want, that's a personal choice, but at the end of the day at some point in the future I think it will happen.” Weiberg: “We've had some deeper conversations about other sports…but we have not talked specifically into any detail about football. They've got a lot of change happening there with their scheduling as well, so I'm sure that's what their focus is at this point. … We are scheduled out with our Power 5 non-conference games through the late ‘30s. Short of that changing somehow, which is possible, but short of that changing, it looks difficult for us to be able to add an Oklahoma or any Power 5 before that.” (link)

Fox yesterday aired two Big Ten volleyball matches in windows leading up to NFL games (markets receiving an early NFL game were shown the Minnesota-Wisconsin match following the conclusion of their NFL game, while markets receiving a late NFL game were shown the Ohio State-Michigan match), and Fox Sports President/COO Mark Silverman tells The Athletic’s Richard Deitsch the idea was years in the making. “When I was at the Big Ten Network, and this goes back eight to 10 years ago, we started really noticing women’s volleyball delivering strong numbers. [...] If we can grow women’s volleyball, then I believe the Big Ten is better off, I believe college sports in general is better off, and I think Fox will be better off. The best way we can do that is by delivering the biggest, broadest audience we can. So let’s see what the numbers are.” (link)

Clemson tops USA Today columnist Dan Wolken’s Week 9 Misery Index after the Tigers’ football loss to NC State on Saturday. Wolken: “Clemson’s issues are pretty simple: They aren’t that talented. … Is that a result of NIL making it easier for non-traditional schools to compete for talent? Is it Swinney’s reluctance to fill roster holes by using the transfer portal? Did Clemson’s knack for finding hidden gems in recruiting just dry up overnight? It’s probably all of that, along with some arrogance and a failure to recognize how quickly the sport was changing around them. But there’s no mistaking it now: After a couple seasons where they were still good but clearly trending in the wrong direction, the Clemson program Swinney built is really broken.” Also in the index: Maryland, Pittsburgh, Houston and Baylor. Kent State Deputy AD/SWA Suzette McQueen and Oregon Deputy AD/SWA Valerie Johnson talk with AthleticDirectorU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz about how they navigate relationships within their departments as senior leaders. McQueen and Johnson also share strategies for effective communication with difficult collaborators, discuss the importance of engaging mid-level professionals and reflect on the relationships they’ve cultivated through their rise to the Deputy AD level. McQueen explains establishing trust starts with clear communication and expectations. “I might say I need that early tomorrow morning. My early tomorrow morning might be nine. Theirs might be 11. So, setting clear expectations. [Saying] I need this by noon and agreeing on that, it eliminates so much ambiguity and leads to so much less stress. … I think if we come up with an understanding of what success is on both sides, it's very easy to see if we met that goal or if we need to pivot, but just setting the boundaries has been very helpful in preventing micromanagement.” On when and how to say no to collaborative efforts, Johnson points out that as a Deputy AD, the task involves examining ideas within the bigger picture of the department. “So, while it might be a no over here, it’s because we’re saying a yes over here. And sometimes that’s not fun to communicate…but it’s about taking the focus back to what we’re doing as a whole department.” Full Q&A. (link)

Sooners Insider shares a video of a Kansas fan taunting Oklahoma WR LV Bunkley-Shelton on the field following the Jayhawks’ upset win over the Sooners on Saturday. Bunkley-Shelton did not visibly react and continued walking off the field. Slate’s Joel Anderson: “I worry so much about players when fans storm the field because, all too often, the burden of restraint is placed exclusively on an already disappointed – and possibly infuriated – group of young men. I’m not the fun police but it needs to stop or there needs to be a better way.” Kudos to Bunkley-Shelton for keeping his composure. (link)

Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark reportedly visited recently with Gonzaga Men’s Basketball HC Mark Few in Spokane. Per Gonzaga Nation’s Cole Forsman: “There are a lot of financial implications to sort out on both sides, and there's no timetable for when everything will be sorted out. If talks advance far enough that the Big 12 members come together to vote on the Bulldogs, they would need at least 75% of the league to vote ‘yes.’ Timing is important here — if a vote came before June 30, 2024, then the Zags would need nine of the 12 schools' approval. If the vote comes after the four former Pac-12 schools officially join the league on July 1, then 12 of the 16 members would have to approve.” (link)

Extra Points purveyor Matt Brown: “Mountain West Commissioner Gloria Nevarez told me today she *also* is not a fan of the changes to the NIT, particularly the idea of giving autobids to members of ‘P6’ leagues, a practice that she told me feels more about rewarding brands than rewarding merit. She also added that despite the new format, she feels confident that MWC teams will be able to compete for and earn at-large selections in the NIT.” (link)
|
Big West Commissioner Dan Butterly on the same topic: “I can directly state this decision was made by the NIT Board and was NOT managed through the NCAA governance structure. Therefore, as a member of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Oversight Committee and NCAA Council, I can assure you the NIT Board decision was made without our opinion, nor our vote. [...] The decision by the NIT Board will cause new postseason opportunities to be created that will compete with the NIT for teams. I have gone on record in support of expanding the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships and thus eliminating the NIT events managed by the NCAA. I will strongly support a review by the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee and the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee to expand the NCAA Division I Basketball Championships in an effort to supersede new events being created and the NCAA Basketball brand to grow stronger under the ‘NCAA Basketball Championships’ umbrella.” (link)

Florida State will adjust ticket prices to help pay for the planned $265M in renovations to Doak Campbell Stadium and not all fans are excited about the cost they’ll incur. One fan, Mike Harrison, says it will cost him $80K to purchase six club seats in the area near his current seats (price includes a one-time contribution fee of $10,000 per seat and $3,250 per seat cost, which includes booster fee), which is "sticker shock" compared to the cost of Harrison's four seats this season ($2,700 - $3,500 per ticket plus $325 booster fee per ticket). Harrison: “We've enjoyed and loved attending games for years and have been Florida State fans through and through, to the core. I understand revenue is important in college athletics. But I believe the price increase from one year to the next is just so astronomical.” Seminoles AD Alford: “The overall response has reflected what the survey revealed – our people enthusiastically endorse us creating an enhanced game experience. These projects always present multiple challenges and trying to please everyone is one of those.” (link)

Penry Advisors founder Jason Penry joins Connect's Steph Garcia Cichosz to dive into the rise of the mega gift and its impact on capital campaigns. Penry, whose fundraising experience includes stops at Texas A&M, Arkansas State and Oklahoma State, shares insights from his independent research into the largest gifts in the history of college athletics, explains the differences between soliciting major gifts in athletics vs. academics, and offers tips for landing major gifts. Penry notes that in the span of just 10 years, the definition of mega gift has changed from $30M to $450M. In examining Texas A&M’s $4.25B fundraising campaign, Penry observes: “You really see that big gifts matter, and you really understand that one or two gifts can really mean the difference between a successful capital campaign or facility campaign and an unsuccessful one. … We found that there were just over 40 gifts of $20M or more in the history of college athletics, so we looked at those 40 gifts,” and roughly 25 had occurred over the last 10 years. “So, this trend of big gifts and donors concentrating their influence, their gifts is really a thing not only in higher education in general, but also in athletics.” Full Q&A on Connect. USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz has the full rundown of football coaching bonuses from this week, but here are the top earners, all of whom earned the extra cash because of bowl eligibility, unless otherwise noted: UCLA HC Chip Kelly ($125K which includes $25K for the sixth win and $100K for bowl appearance); Kansas HC Lance Leipold ($100K); Tennessee HC Josh Heupel ($100K); Oklahoma State HC Mike Gundy ($62,500); and Kansas State HC Chris Klieman joins Troy HC Jon Sumrall in the $50K group. Additionally, Louisville HC Jeff Brohm triggered an automatic one-year contract extension for the Cardinals seventh win of the year. (link)

Duke dropped a game at Louisville yesterday, but the Blue Devils are surging under HC Mike Elko. Duke AD Nina King on the challenge of retaining Elko: “I’m glad other people are excited about his coaching ability, but we intend to keep him at Duke for a long time. He tells me what he needs and I tell him what we can do, and we’ll continue to work on building that program. It’s no secret: Football needs to be good.” More from Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde. JohnCanzano.com’s namesake provides a behind-the-scenes look at how Portland State’s video of President Ann Cudd working out with the football team went viral. Former Vikings staffer Cory Hansen, now the Director of Brand at Sport Oregon, first pitched the idea to PSU and expected a rejection, but Cudd was immediately into the idea. Hansen: “We were surprised at the level of commitment. She didn’t have to scream after the deadlift and make all the faces. She didn’t have to put on the pads and we were certainly surprised she was so willing to show up on a Saturday and run on the field.” Film producers had expected just a handful of student-athletes to volunteer to be in the background of the video’s workout scene, but when the whole team showed up, Vikings HC Bruce Barnum said: “Sorry, this is all we could get.” Canzano cites Cudd’s willingness as an example of how she understands the importance of athletics to the university’s mission. Barnum adds: “She’s talking (football) stadium. She’s talking athletics — period. That hasn’t been done around here in a few moons. Since Pokey Allen, probably. It’s good to see that. It’s good to see that interest.” (link); Here’s the full (awesome) video in case you missed it. (link)
